For our family it has to be salted egg with lotus paste (white or brown), Cantonese flavour and nothing else. We tried many fancy styles and never liked them. The 2-yolk and lotus in Sydney is over $60 per tin (4 pieces) this year, getting more and more expensive.

Like Easter eggs, it will be half priced after the festivals. Also tins of moon cakes used to be the great swapping gift game where I may have 10 tins from different friends and you would try to give them away and pretend that you bought it just for them. If you are really unlucky someone could pass you last year's stock. For western taste a chocholate fudge filling should be quite acceptable.

Traditional mooncakes are usually taken with a nice pot of chinese tea. As the mooncakes are usually quite sweet and "heavy", pairing with tea makes it perfect. Sit with your family, sip some tea and have mooncake while admiring the beautiful full moon. So mooncake is just one part of the whole mid-autumn festival experience.
