Wow mate thanks from Australia this has been the biggest help I have found in 6 months, I didn’t want to pay someone to do it I wanted to figure out and do it myself and in those 6 months it turned out to be a bad spark plug although it was a brand new one and gapped correctly it showed the same symptoms as the one I replaced so I immediately thought there was other faults, now it’s perfect. Cheers

mine did the same thing, i adjusted valves and it still did it. I tore engine apart and found the intake cam lobe was worn, i installed a new camshaft and now it runs perfect.

That's interesting, I have not seen a worn out cam lobe yet. I just finished a video series on a 21 HP Briggs that I had to change the cam as the compression release was broken. My 3rd cam replacement. Later Glenn

I’ve seen it a lot on several different engine brands over the years I use a dial to check the lift on intake and exhaust valve, even gas generators are having issues with bad cam lobes also

Ironically enough, I'm watching this 1 year after you made it. It's time for my beater to get spruced up. She takes all of the abuse around here. Does everything you wouldn't use your good equipment on. She's actually our transportation for around the property, maybe only three months of the year that she isn't used. Poor girl has been used and abused. That's the correct plug there. Oh, and I have mangled the push rods before on these old beaters. Peace friend.

I normally never coment but this video helped me a lot I got a mower from a guy for free who couldn’t get it running he said he couldn’t figure it out it had spark compression and fuel he even said the timing was right but I ended up checking everything again just to be sure took the head off put it at top dead center put the head back on and adjusted the valves and one of them the torque screw was backed almost all the way out I didn’t have a gap checker so I eye balled it and now it runs great

Due you Allright on my book you're down to earth overall I liked your video. One tip on installing the spark plug get you a piece of fuel line hose and pushed into the spark plug end it makes it lot easier to get the spark plug started

Good advice. Have done that many times, especially on cars with headers and engines that are hot! Thanks Glenn

Thank you, super helpful video! Im new to small engine maintenance and repair but I’ve been tearing down my Troy bilt due to gas in the oil. Must’ve been a stuck float, had about 4qts of oily gas in it and I was wondering why it wouldn’t start 😅. Now that I’ve swapped the carb it starts… but runs like this one did so time to pop the valve cover.

Watched the video to figure out where the spark plug is on my Briggs & Stratton powered ride on lawn mower, which is shown at 4:30🙂10 minutes later I still have my fingers and hands after refitting the belt! 🖐🏻

just like mine.. it pops and shuts off.. sometimes runs smooth.. very little its over 20 years old.. I am fixing the fuel elbow on it and replacing some blades and pumping up tires and may have to fix starter.. its been good, not used alot. just old I guess

You do you, but I always lift the front end up & pull out the spark plug. Lifting it reduces the amount of oil leaking onto your floor & makes the engine simple to turn over by hand. I also always power wash customer mowers before working on them. I do not like working on filthy, nasty, oily equipment. Some people are pigs and don’t take care of anything.

Yep... most rigs get a soap down and a run to the car wash before unloading off the trailer. My barn property does not have water service, i have a 250 gal tank that i fill from a neighbord garden hose when i need it but the car wash is only about a mile away. I keep my equipment clean, newat and serviced, i am shocked that some people can take an otherwise nice piece of equipment and treat it like it was disposable....

Hey so my fan broke on my BR 17.5 and i didn't notice till about done w the lawn, I know I overheated the motor. I actually melted the screw holes on the top cover from the mounting screws getting so hot. I changed the oil but the engine ticks louder than it did before. Performance seems the same other than ticking louder. What do you think it might be? I'm going to run it till it pops hope I can get the rest of this year out of it. Interesting side note. The motor new in 2023 costs as much as the whole mower did in 2016.

An engine overheats from the top down, so a top end failure is more likely than a rod failure. If it did not seize up, I would adjust the valves and I think there is a good chance it will be fine Good luck Glenn

@@GlennsSpeedShop Ok the valves were a little out of spec but it was the pushrod guide 690822. The bottom of the plastic piece that guides the intake rod had melted crumbled away. I flipped what was left of it to the bottom until the replacement gets here. Adjusted the valves and the ticking is just about gone. Sounds a lot better thanks again.

It's the spark plug breaking down under load.

It's not real common that a spark plug causes a run poorly condition, but, yep, you're correct, was a bad and miss gapped plug. I get a bunch of cheap China spark plugs with new carbs and such, don't ever use them.. They are truly junk....

Not all these models have adjustable valves! If it’s like mine it has hydraulic valves an they’re factory set to zero clearance with no way to adjust it

Hi, what is tik-tik noise ? Is it normal or is it something?
@GlennsSpeedShop Жыл бұрын
The camera / phone microphone doesn't do a real good job of reproducing mechanical noises, it's more likely a camera noise than a real noise as I did not recall a noise as you described. An exhaust note bouncing off the walls or shop floor is likely. Thanks for the comment. Glenn

Cant hear anything at the beginning because you are talking over the sound of the engine.
