Thank you! My bimalleolar happened Labor Day 2022. Everything you shared about your recovery is exactly what has been happening to me; stiff when I get out of bed in the morning (Frankenstein leg😂), intermittent reminders that yes I injured myself. I am back to work with quite a bit of fast-paced walking a few times a day. What I do not feel comfortable doing is a "jump" or a "hard landing". I still gaurd it. But, I have been told I can run. I am still too scared for that kind of impact. Regarding the compression socks: game changer for the best! Conforming gel ice packs: The best! Surgical scars are barely noticeable. So far progress ia good. My BIGGEST hurdle... impatience! I hated the times I had to stop and elevate..the worst as it stopped my momentum of my activity. My property is sloped so at first I could not access my backyard at all. After about six months I decided to slowly walk up the hill as a way to strengthen my leg. While I do not sprint up the hill (like in my backpacking days) I know that it is keeping the joint stronger as I challenge it with different weight bearing angles. So my advice is...keep moving, even if baby steps. Do not give in to negative thoughts or self-pity. It will set you back..trust me I know from experience!

This is the best post I’ve come across on this topic. You made me feel so much better and less alone. I’ve been healthy and active my whole life and my trimalleolar fracture brought my life to a halt. I had the hardware out at 6 months because of severe pain. Now, 8 months out, I’m finally walking about 4,000 steps without too much pain. Lots of stiffness, limited ROM and ankle is still weak. Can’t wait to get back to near normal …. I feel hopeful now. Thank you so much for sharing your story !

Are you also in Canada where you get free healthcare? My surgeon mentioned that because of the thinness of my ankle region, I might experience pain with the hardware in that area over time and need to get it removed much later (I just had ORIF surgery 2 weeks ago). I'm genuinely curious if that cost is covered, because in the U.S., it's been $20k just to go through the initial "ankle break and surgery" process and money doesn't grow on trees...

I have my 6 week post-ORIF surgeon follow up tomorrow. I stepped in a hole at my kid's school at parent night, breaking all 3 bones in the ankle. 😩 Hoping to be cleared for partial weight bearing tomorrow. It has been reeeally difficult, as I am recently divorced with 2 kids + a small business owner. And like you mention, I am basically bedridden. My parents had to come stay with us to help out. Yours is the only video I've seen that's recent! Very encouraging, thank you sir!🙏🏻 Hugs & high 5s from Alabama🙌🏻

I broke my ankle( Trimalleolar fracture) almost 5 weeks ago. I have my follow up on March 26th, I've scheduled PT for March 27th. I have had some home PT, but mostly for stretching, balance. I did make a few videos since it was so traumatic for me. I am thankful I have my spouse helping me, but its been very tough. Mentally too since we were supposed to leave for Australia 10 days after this happened.

Hi, I had a dislocation and Trimalleolar Fracture after falling down one step! in August 2020. Everything you are saying is 100% correct with me - in addition the only physical problem I have is if I’m standing waiting, my ankle will sometimes randomly give way for a second, I then have to limp for a minute or so then it’s back to ‘normal’ again! (Maybe it’s because I’m twisting my body & looking around). I am amazed at what the surgeons (UK NHS) have done & how brilliant my scars have healed. Think positive & you will get there, Take care.❤

Alan Shields Hamilton South Lanarkshire Scotland. Hi Neil, I had a stroke back in 2014, it's getting close to 10 years since it happened I dont remember the exact date, but I think it might be 10 years exactly tomorrow to the day, but I can't be 100% sure of the exact date. So they removed part of my skull lovley because I had 70% bleeding on the brain six months after that I had a what is could a Cranioplasty put into my skull a titanium plate three weeks after that I had a massive sezure but since then, I have been fine no problems health wise other than I will always have Homocystinuria that's just a fact of life for me. I was born with that. In terms of the Cranioplasty I can 100% feel it if there is a massive shift in tempture it's worse if it drops below 0. tempture wise, the heat is not as big of an issue. When the weather drops below 0, I can feel the titanium compres & when I get in doors & put the heating on after myb 2 hours depending on how long I have been out I can feel it pop like a crushed can of say coke for example back to how it should be it's slightly painful when it compres but that's life things happen I am lucky to be alive apparently with having had 70% bleeding the surgeon that did both my opps sead he had no idea how I pulled though the original operation I just think it was fate & strength of caricature detention. My sight has been affected by the stoke I am & that affected my balance, but hell will freeze over before I give up on myself. I am an extremely determined person. I say it's in my blood, my D.N.A. never to give up. It took time to get my confidence back & just when I had the pandemic hit & it's been very difficult to get any kind of confidence back since. And to be honest Neil The pandemic was the hardest thing I have ever been, though as during that time of lockdown I hardly seen most of my family for months on end it was soul destroying itv killed me inside. I had to start rebuilding my confidence from scratch & it's an ongoing process, but hopefully, I get there again with my confidence, but with the global financial problems, it's been a massive challenge. Our N.H.S National heath system is free, like in Canada, but honestly, it's a complete shambles but I know from friends it's wose in England The N.H.S. I am due to see my consultant for the first time face to face On the second of August this year, for the first time since 2019, a new consultant I have never met before, I was not keen on my last one he was extremely abrupt & not a pepole person but knew everything about Homocystinuria & K.P.U. Sorry this is so long, Neil you are a KZbin legend watched Rangers & Hurricanes last night it was a snore fest of a game it was that dull, not a lot happened apart from My Rangers goal.

It's been 9 months since my initial surgery and almost 3 months from the 2nd surgery where they removed all the metal. (3 plates and 23 screws). And I can say that getting the metal removed has greatly improved my mobility. I'm still in PT and things are trending towards getting all of the flexibility back. So if you're able to I highly recommend getting the metal taken out.

Thank you so much for your video. You explain so many things that I have experienced and I understand the process of the timeline so much more now. I want to rush my recovery and get back to my "normal". I am experiencing the pain when getting up in the morning and can hardly put any pressure on that foot, ankle or leg to walk. After awhile it tends to loosen up making it easier to walk without so much pain. I'm a female in my early 70's who has been very independent and this has set me back a bit. I'm 6 months out (had surgery with metal plate and pins) and I'm preparing for a Carribean cruise in November (booked before ankle accident). I'm hoping I can enjoy this adventure without a lot of pain and obstacles. Thank you again and I hope you have much success in your future.

I'm grateful you shared this. I'm 3 weeks post op for the same fracture. Little to no pain really, decent range of motion in my opinion. My doc wants me out of work until 5/11 and part time until 7/11 and the idea of being out of commission for that long is devastating and definitely not affordable. I'm usually a busy nurse and so ready to be back on my feet regardless of any discomfort. Hoping for good news and to ease into weight bearing by my 6 week appointment. Glad to hear you're doing so well, and good luck to anyone that's dealing with the same thing. We'll get through it somehow!

It's been 7 months since my injury where my tibia dislocated and broke through the skin. 6 months since surgery with a plate and 10 screws. It's progressing well. Walking is near normal, but like you, I have limited range of flexibility as you demonstrated. I'm 57 and it's healing faster than I had imagined. Been back on the dirt bike a few times now. I bought some moto boots (Alpinestars tech 7's) that provide more protection and are stiffer than previous ones. Still some discoloration compared to my other foot.

CAM boot is a godsend , 5 days after surgery walking although awkward with no crutches . Only if your surgeon allows full weight bearing. Kept mine on for 2 weeks when I got stitches out but then the cam boot I could remove for bathing and 1 week later I removed for sleeping. Helped me recover a lot quicker, especially for keeping muscles moving.

I actually came across this video first and then watched your first one. I liked both of your videos because I am at the 6-month mark. I started walking without any help 14 weeks and then driving not until after 22 weeks. I am coming to the end of my therapy. I have a pain right on my inner ankle everyday but the alternative is to take the appliances out and at this point I don't want to be laid up another 3 months. Before the accident I did play Pickleball but I am 75 so I don't think I will go back to that. At this point I'm very leery of hurting and walking very gingerly on flat surfaces

Wow - so happy I found this and ty so much for sharing. I just needed to hear from a real person that has actually gone thru this. First, so glad that you are healed up! It gives me hope. I was a very active female - ultra runner, hiker, swimmer etc. I took a fall - a bad, steep, long fall. I remember nothing. It was a good thing I was in shock as I sat up in an Island Hospital - joke, more like a bad Vet Hospital for 16 hrs....with nothing. I had a gash in my chin, 1/2 a molar, fractured cheek bone & jaw (that I found out after 2 weeks of being home!?!), trimalleolar fracture, open unattended wound, broken wrist and one wrist broken into. When I finally made it to the main island (had to wait out a storm before the boat could pick me up), I had surgery. It's now 10 weeks - My ultra running mind has literally kept me sane thru this but I have my days. I feel like if I could get the swelling down long enough I could walk better/longer. I do have a T.E.D. Sock I wear a few hours daily and I swim 30 minutes plus my on the floor exercises & pt. I know this is going to be long - I'm ready but question, I am so stinking exhausted!!! Do you remember feeling so tired? I've upped my protein and vitamins/minerals to speed healing. Any extra advice, I'd love to take it. TY again for sharing!!

Same here, Covid restrictions prevented me from getting my hardware taken out. I literally had an appointment made and then lockdowns happened. Since then i just haven’t gotten around to getting them taken out. I can run but it takes time to build up strength. I stopped running for a few months and now my bad ankle is quite weak again (compared to the good ankle). My dorsiflexion is limited as well. It affects some activities like squatting and jumping, so I feel it does affect my skating. But for daily life it’s not really an issue.

I got a fairly major surgery on my foot near the ankle 16.5 years ago. It required bones to be broken and I had 2 pins put in that were removed after about a month or so. I was in a regular cast for 1.5 months and a walking cast for another 1.5 months. One thing that surprised me was how much it hurt to move right after the surgery. I guess moving your legs/feet causes the blood to move to your feet, and because there are so many nerve endings there, it makes it very painful. Instant knife pains. I feel like the strength never fully returned to my ankle and the range of motion definitely didn't (very similarly to you).

I would say its probably because of the joint, muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc not moving, not necessarily the nerves and bloodflow itself.

Thanks for sharing, it feels like there isn't a lot of info on long term recovery so this is helpful to compare notes. I'm also at 5 years, agree on discomfort and being used to that. I do find running more than 5km hard as my gait is different (good leg compensates) and I get lower back pain. Steep hiking is harder with range of movement, so I can limp up steeper inclines so to speak. But overall I get around :)

I’m a year and a half since surgery for broken ankle. I concur with you about the sensation now, not exactly painful but uncomfortable if I think about it. It’s stiff when I wake up or if I sit for very long but it loosens up pretty fast. I’m working on stretching every day and hope that it will continue to become more flexible pushing forward. I have been surprised by how long the recovery rate has been. But, since I’ve had a few episodes of being very discouraged that it would ever be adequate again, I am quite relieved that it is improving so much.

The mental part of the process is the most difficult part. I’m 13 months post surgery and at the moment all is better and I’m rollerskating again. Like you, a lot in my life changed after the injury and I agree that lots happened because of the injury. I've had my trimalleolar fracture in July of 2019......Today I'm day five post OP of my 3 surgery that was done by Latvia Hockey Team's orthopaedic surgeon....and to be honest I don't feel much difference at the moment. 2 of my surgeries were free as per Latvian Med System, my last I had to pay for because the Doc quit his National Trauma Center job and works only in the Private Clinic. But it's fine, price was still manageable! I don't know whether my injury was way more severe but boy my life has changed dramatically! CTs and MRI shows no problem, because they're made when you're in a passive leg mode, my trouble starts when I'm in an active mode, stupid thing just won't bend and move when I'm upright! Aggggghhhhh, anyway thanks for the video. Was nice to see I'm not the only one dealing with all the shit so long after the initial trimalleoar fracture. Seing friends and people telling you they went back to 100% functionality after an injury or fracture sometimes is very frustrating and depressing.

I'm also scheduled for what seems like a Tri or Bimalleolar Fracture surgery. Also a Talar Fracture & a Jone's Fracture. Seems like a difficult procedure but no full on fractures (more loke cracks) thankfully apart from the Jone's fracture. They'll try their best for an external fixation + casts but if that's not possible, then they'll have to go for ORIF. Fingers crossed.

I am in Canada as well, had the same injury Dec 17, 2023, so just over 3 months ago. Similar plates and screws on both sides and on the back. FIL drove me to ER, admitted immediately, reduction right away, admitted to hospital until surgery, surgery 2 days later, released the next day the 20th. Signed up for Ironman Ottawa last week. As soon as second cast was removed and staples removed (gave it an extra week for insidious to completely heal), hit the pool Jan 15 (was using an Air Cast).

Trimalleolar fracture 18 mths ago. I can walk, but do not feel steady. 5 months of PT. Constantly stretching my ankle. Very stiff in the morning. A feeling like bones are so tight i cant bend properly, impenged. I don't think its the hardware. Plus had a post surgery blood clot in that leg, so now I'm afraid to get the hardware out. My foot was like a solid rock after surgery, so i have to say I'm better than I was.

Hi Neil! Thank you for sharing your experience. I twisted and fell on my ankle while playing football and got diagnosed with Trimalleolar fracture on April fools day:/. I got done with the surgery yesterday. I saw your previous video on my KZbin feed and it’s really helpful in terms of knowing the timeline of recovery and being mentally prepared for it. I recently graduated, don’t know when will I be able to start working. But yeah, hoping to get online/hybrid position for now until I recover completely. How was that for you when you were on bed rest? The time doesn't seem to pass by. How were you managing with time while you were still in cast?

I went through this over Xmas, so I am a little over 4 months out. Plates on both fibula and tibia. Get a good knee scooter, it is the best for mobility. I was back at work 2 weeks after surgery, once I had my cast removed and staples removed and went to air cast I started hitting the pool for swimming and physio. If you have a pool close by it will definitely help. I was walking at 4 weeks, although just around the house, when I went out I would use the air cast as it was still winter and icy and figured if I did fall it would offer some protection. Since the spring have been wearing a high ankle work boot for support and using low compression socks. Went mountain biking the other day.

Thank you for your encouraging words 🙏🌷 stay Blessed. I broke my ankle 2yrs ago and I have contact pain on my ankle , swell and at time walk is so difficult. I am thinking to remove the implants and see how it goes. Meanwhile I am told pain is due to arthritis that have developed on my feet 😔 and the Dr suggest to do another surgery for fusion. Which I am scared to do , still thinking . However I agreed with your words on trusting the process and there is a reason to all that happens in our lives. Stay Blessed 🌷

Had the same fracture October 2021, got the plates (2 pieces) and screws (16 pieces) out December 2022. Before the removal my ankle felt as it did not belong to me anymore, with severe contact pain. After removal the only thing left to worry about is minor contact pain if I accidentally hit something with my outer malleolus. I have slight arthritis, but getting the metal out was a huge game changer in my case. My range of motion is 95 percent back to normal since then, much better as shown in this video. I have to admit I was training as hard as possible, plus physiotherapy, to get to that point. Now I can do sports again. Mountainbiking with a supportive ankle brace, kitesurfing without a brace but with a lot of situation awareness to avoid hard landings and twisting of the ankle in choppy conditions. Anyways it gets better everyday, I even managed to strain the ankle and it did not brake again :-). Stay mentally strong and do not give up, you will get there.

He said it is a small surgery. 10 min. In u.s.a, schedule time is one month ahead. He said l can walk in two weeks. I am not planning yet. Since it doesn't give me too much pain. It's been one year and a half now. Get used to so called normal. Also the doctor said i can take out any time. Doesn't matter how many years after the surgery. Question. Do you feel your toes have discomfort or little pain after you sit for a while? Will it go away? Thanks!

Thank you for sharing this. I think you and I broke our ankle close to the same time. December 6, 2019 for me. I, like you slipped on black ice. I can do pretty much with my ankle. But it feels stiff. There is still some swelling. I don’t know how to get rid of that. I had ORIF on December 13. In a cast for 4 weeks and air boot for 6 weeks, no weight bearing. Started walking March of 2020. I don’t think I’ll have the hardware removed. It doesn’t bother me and like you I don’t want to go through 3 months of no weight bearing. The stiffness and some swelling still bother me. No pain but don’t like it.

I am 7 months out of surgery. I went for my follow up last month and he told me it was super easy to get them out. No boot or anything he just puts in sucher he said the only recovery is the closing of the wound and it was a 15 minute surgery. I am having problems skating. My outside plate is really limiting and I can feel it when I do crossovers. Also the plate rubs on my boot and starts to rub through the scare tissue after refing 3 beer league games. Also the screws on the inside will hurt the next day... I am planning to get everything out in January.

Its in that moment that it sink into my mind that I'm in a serious situation like what will happen to me now, when will it be healed and the like. I admit that I didn't get it seriously in the 1st place because what I think is just I'll get recovered fast in fact fractured bones will heal a couple of months

Cost to remove metal in US varies. If your doctor approves it your insurance will probably cover it. How much your copay will be depends on your insurance. Best to call your company and ask. Medicare is a whole other complicated thing. Again, call and ask.

I have a really hard time stopping with my broken foot in the back. I don't know if it is not bending or if it is ankle strength but it is scaring me to hockey stop with my broken foot in back.
