I agree with you 100 percent. The LPVO has obsoleted the old scout concept on modern rifles.

Hey Alan, I watched your video twice. Here in New Zealand a lot of guys get Tikka T3 in 308 or 708. Cut the barrel down to 16 or 18 inch and suppress. But with a half decent scope. Still a 400m rifle. Interesting video. Thanks for sharing Dave

Looks great One thing. That front ring and mounts in general. I have a few Ruger Americans both Predators and Ranch models and LOVE THEM. But found substantial improvements in accuracy and huge improvement in dureability going to the dual dovetail Leupold base and rings. Big plus is the flipable Front base allowing narrow or wide ring spacing. I have cracked front glass with the front ring where yours is. My 450Bush Master is setup with a 3x M8 Leupold in these mounts. Nice n light like yours. 16" barrel is quick and accuracy is touching @ 100 yards and plenty of horse power. Real Good video!!

Yes Jeff Cooper was like so many that tend to get set in their ways of their own generation. Even the officially designated scout rifles commercially available including the Steyr that he contributed to ignored one or more aspects of his original criteria, I agree that the Ruger American and some similar offerings can do just fine particularly on a budget. I like that it's lightweight as well.

Keeping a spare mag in the carrier is a good idea. I have a similar carrier with 10 extra 00 buck on my 870 Marine Magnum. Normally my walking around gun is a Glock 26 which has been my daily carry since I bought it over 10 years ago. Then again I live in PA so the dangers you and I face are very different.

Nice setup! I have one in 350 legend that I’d like to suppress. I think it would be good for short range caribou and Sitka Blacktails on the coast. That said, I do like forward mounting optics or longer eye relief scopes on the bridge so I can get into different shooting positions without banging my eye socket. Great to see a new video from you!

Thanks, your 350 legend does sound like a sweet short range rifle! What magazines does that one use?

Nice rifle and dog you have there. There was a time a few years ago that I put a lot of research and thought into the "Scout" rifle concept. Maybe I am just generic and/or overly frugal, but I put together one that works for me. I think lightweight, handy, weatherproof, and will get the job done with good shot placement being the main criteria for me. Also, to me, scouting means exploring and traveling in areas unknown to one...not so much hunting unless it is necessary, really. So, a Mossberg 464 Brushgun in 30-30(Laminate stock, Marinecote finish, raised scope so Fire Sights could still be used, sling, and extra ammo on a butt stock sleeve). I guess it would be called a "Cub Scout."
@gunsgearoutdoorsalaska58752 жыл бұрын
Haha, Cub scout is a cute name for it. I think you have a good point about it being mostly for exploring/scouting and occasionally hunting when the opportunity presents itself or if needed.

IMO a Leupold 2.5x20mm with 5" of eye relief is a really nice rugged and compact option. Use an Aimpoint Micro for a BUIS option. That 1.5-5x20mm you have is a good option too.

Totally agree regarding long eye relief scopes. They suck!

I’m always curious about the availability of ammo up in AK. Every time I order I few cases of 5.56 or other ammo down here in the lower 48 it always says can’t ship to AK. Is there a pretty decent amount of ammo for sale up there? I want to move up there but I’d definitely want a steady supply of ammunition. Great video. Nice rifle. 😁👍🏻
@gunsgearoutdoorsalaska58752 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I have not found a place that ships ammo or components to AK yet. We are at the mercy of what is in the stores here and in the peak of the shortage there was almost nothing but during normal times its not bad. It is wise to stock up so one can weather an event like that.

Nice setup and good points... but I'm not sure why you have the suppressor... what's the point? It looks like it would hang on brush as well.

Honestly, it is on there because I went through the trouble of getting one and want to use it. I will decide later if it will stay on the rifle after using it in the field for a while. I like the idea of them but I will decide later if its worth the weight and length.

What about the Springfield M1A Scout rifle?
@dortywings72178 ай бұрын
The scout rifle idea was even at its time antiquated. Why would you consider a bolt gun appropriate for fighting. You take your best gun to the frontier and make it short an light. Today's scout should be a light AR in .300, 6.5, 6.8 or AK 762x39 etc with an optic. Back then maybe a .30 carbine would have done the trick
