Personally, I went with a tomahawk over a hatchet. Mine is the Cold Steel Trailhawk. Yeah, you'll have to refine the edge better when you get new, but the BIG advantage to the tomahawk is that it's zero maintenance. With traditional hatchets and axes (assuming you have a wood handled one... the only option for axes, IMO. Polymer handles have a tendency to snap and break, especially in cold weather), the constant changing of humidity and heat to cold can shrink the handle enough to work the head loose. Trying to deal/fix a loose hatchet/axe head on the go is not an easy or quick task. The CS Trailhawk will actually chop and split wood way above its size and weight if you know how to work a tomahawk properly. And if you're on the move, you don't need to be splitting large amounts of wood anyway, even in winter. Assuming you have a properly rated sleeping bag and winter shelter knowledge.

Nice one again, thanks for sharing. If (?) it’s meant to be a self-sufficient kit, what’s your plan for holding the water to treat it with the tablets?

Thanks for watching! Thats a good point, I have a pathfinder 32 oz bottle, maybe I can attach he knife to the molle on the bottle holder?
@leopoldarkham70173 жыл бұрын
@@theghost7083 Yeah fair enough. If you need it to be fully redundant/self-contained you should be able to squeeze one of those plastic water bags in one of the tins. I don't like them very much though so maybe attaching a rolled up flexible bottle (think Katadyn before or similar) might be good too. But again only relevant if the knife sheath kit is meant to be self-sufficient.

I like the set up it makes sense and is fuctional. I have a different setup based on my specific needs. My only suggestion would be to upgrade the Streamlight to a Surefire Defender.
@theghost70833 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching ! is the streamlight a bad light ?
@jasonst.george57993 жыл бұрын
@@theghost7083 the Streamlight is a standard light assembled in the US with some Chinese parts. The Surefire Defender is a tactical flashlight made 100% in the US. It's pricey but for what your doing it's light years ahead of the Streamlight. The Surefire Defender doubles as a tactical flashlight and a self defense tool with high grade machined aluminum something Streamlight cannot match. I own two Defenders.
@theghost70833 жыл бұрын
@@jasonst.george5799 Thanks for the info, I did not know that, the reason I chose that flashlight was because the person who made the sheath made it specifically for that light, but I will definitely look into that light , that is something I do not want to cheap out on ! Thank you for pointing that out to me I really appreciate it !

That's a good setup. The BK9 is probably better than an Esee Junglas2 in a situation where you may have to defend yourself because it's a better fighting knife. Maybe you could add a sling to that knife because it might be a bit bulky to carry on your belt and a few drops of oil on those screws in the handle.

This is an amazing setup! If I may ask, why did you not also integrate a machete as well?
@unfi67983 жыл бұрын
That knife rig is awesome matey, heavy but awesome. Maybe you can add some fatwood or shavings. Also try squeezing a sealable plastic bag for H2O, that way if you only have the knives you have a vessel to purify your water aka H2O. Great vid mate. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Australia. Stay safe.

Very good knife. And an excellent kit. What’s with all the city slickers suggesting you get rid of the flint and steel?! I’ve been using flint and steel since I was eight years old, that was 1967. It’s my first choice when I’m making fire in the bush. I’ve used it in wet and cold conditions and it has never failed me. I noticed more than one comment that suggest you ditch the F&S for a lighter. Don’t. If you’re having trouble making fire in wet or snowy conditions, you just haven’t done it often enough. Keep some natural jute twine to start your birds nest. It will get easier the more often you do it. The steel will never run out or get used up like a lighter or ferro rod will. In a real survival situation, you need to think long term survival.

I would get the rust off of the scale screws and then paint them. Also I would ditch the flint&steel set to be replaced by a lighter. Because I have used flint and steel in less than pleasant conditions and can say a well kept lighter is much easier and quicker. If it was a real situation you don't have time for playing pioneer, you want a fire as quick as possible. If the lighter is inoperable then use the fero rod. And if you have 2 fero rods then you have no need for a flint and steel set. But keep char tin for future tinder making. Also, the water treatment tablets are only useful if you have something to keep water in. I suggest a whirl pack bag.

Funny you said that I was just practicing with my flint in steel a few hours ago I wanted to see if I can do it in the cold and my hand froze lol it is very frustrating it is not easy as people make it seem , I will look up the whirl pack and check it out I appreciate your feedback brother !

My thing is I don't really dig Kydex or plastic or composite sheaths, as you are well aware. If you don't custom make them yourself. Retrieving a blade can be difficult. I'm a leather and high tensile strength fire retardant canvas. But i like How you have that set up. I can possibly do that in leather or canvas. Im still collecting materials and proper leather working tools. If I had run when the SHTF. Id like to be able to just throw in my what i call my war vest. Tactically set up for myself. And that set up on a tactical belt. Kinda battle survival gear I've put together over the years. Plus my B.O.B... Which lives in the truck anyhow. The vest and tach belt(the wife calls it the batman utility belt) itself. Hangs by my bedside..

I think you have too many fire starters, u already have 2 fero rods, the flint and steel takes up too much space. Swap those for a water container like a heavy duty ziplock or aluminum foil in case ur bag gets lost and all u end up with is that knife pack. Also the handle of the Becker is hollow, you can fit a lot of stuff there like fish hooks and fishing line. You can also wrap a few feet of paracord somewhere in your knife pack. Also i think a solar powered hand-cranked combo light would serve better for long term use than battery powered lights.

1095 is faaaar far from being tough. Also it's more of overated steel, than an actuall supersteel that marketing made it look like. Another point, is that the Becker and all Ka-Bars in carbon steel, are not 1095 cv, that's another marketing trick, it's Carbon V the steel they use, which has completely different recipe than the 1095 and it's not the 1095 with added Chromium and Vanadium that Ka-Bar claims... Another point, that most people ignore, is the fact, that 1095 will dull eventually, even if you don't use the knife at all, just from the humidity in the air. Another point, is, that steel is that last factor you should care for in a blade and not the first, which the marketing has made you thing is. Heat treatment, thinnes/thickness main bevel and edge geometries, even handlde design and ergos and sheath itself, are more important, than the steel it'self is. Damn, I score more points, than Antetokounmpo and Middleton combined!!!
@theghost70833 жыл бұрын
Wow I had no clue about the carbon v , I went with the 1095 just because it would be easier to sharpen then a super steel when out on the field , Thanks for educating me on the steel ,there's a lot I'm learning from everyone ,what company would you recommend as far as a true 1095 ?
@greekveteran27153 жыл бұрын
@@theghost7083 Ballbearing steel is almost as easy to keep it sharp, holds its edge 3 to 4 times longer, won't rust as easy and has also at least e times more toughness and a lot more edge stability (no chips on the edge that 1095 may show with use) TOPS and ESEE are the most famous comanies, that got rich selling 1095 at prices as if it was a super steel. You ask for 1095, because that what marketing made you look for. ESEE hardens 1095 really low, like 56 hrc. Even a Morakniv which has a slightly better steel than 1095 hardens it properly at 58-60 hrc, which no matter if the numbers seem close, it still is a very big difference. Add on that that it is a bit better steel than 1095, it means you can get a better knife, with better handle ergos, bettter steel and heat treat and way better edge geometry, with only 10$ (Mora Companion or any Mora with carbon steel blade) Even their Stainless steel blade, are better quality, than a 1095 ESEE, which costs 20 times more ,than a Mora!
