I had a similar issue year ago. Took it to 2 different mechanics. Tried a bunch of stuff. Cost me lots. Come to find out, that "sucking sound" was a vacuum hose that was off or had a hole in it. Hubs found the line ourself with a spray bottle and soapy water! Had to check every single one but found it and replaced it, that old van purred like a kitten.....til I hit a deer lol

A spray bottle and soapy water is wrong to use. Vacuum sucks in...soapy water going into your engine is bad. Soapy water is for pressure leak, like a tire. Use carb cleaner or brake cleaner. Engine will rev up when it sucks in the flammable vapors

I'm not a mechanic but when I was younger I was a single parent and had to do my own work. Try your vacuum lines if they have cracks or pin holes it will run rough and dye on you. You will have to keep your foot on the gass for it to stay running. Don't give up your doing good.

@@bcrouch2626 But, if there was a leak in a fuel line you would probably smell gas. The fuel pump pressurizes the fuel lines to deliver gas to the engine...no vacuum there.

Jaylena it sounds like 1 of 2 things. #1 a vacuum leak allowing too much air or #2 it's not getting enough fuel. So you need to check fuel injectors and all vacuum hoses.

Randy it does not have fuel injectors it is a 93 it has plugs, wires, carburetor, fuel filter etc.

@@in2itradio , I agree a weak fuel pump and bad fuel filters (some vehicles have two in line, one close to, or in the tank and one after the fuel pump.) Checking for vacuum leaks is also a good plan.

Jaylena if the service engine light came on you could connect a code reader to it and it'll tell you what the problem is . If you have a parts store close by they usually will hook it up and test it for free . It sounds to me like you have a vacuum leak . Check all the vacuum hoses on top and around the motor .

Agree and would buy an obd code reader. They are not that expensive and as long as service engine soon light comes on it should pick up the code. Google the code with make and model of vehicle and there is your answer. Easy for even the unexperienced like me.

cracked loose vaccum lines will cause an engine to run rough,stall and set off check engine lights get a cheap scanner and it will direct you to what your problem is don't keep changing parts to find the problem.

That 93 had a very basic computer...very minimal diagnostics. Could read the codes with a paper clip in the connector

It also sounds like it is having timing issues maybe do a full tune up plugs distributour cap and check spark plug wires for spark gaps ( try looking at it in dark you can see if wires are sparking on any metal parts

@Bill Sbac the main thing that moves that vehicle is the engine and transmission , if that goes bad it does not matter if the rest is made out of gold or big money and to break down 1000 of miles away from anyone or even 100 miles from a town it will cost you big bucks on towing and fixing for being cheap when safe at home , that`s why we always see many people broken down in interstates in panic... is not fun or safe to be stranded for hours or days in the unknown with people or mechanics you don`t know but all of the sudden they will be your best friend !

It's still a good idea to get yourself a good quality trickle charger to keep your battery or batteries topped up. If you already got a solar set up, you can prolly run it off that depends on the size of your solar.

We have an expression “Life Wasn’t meant to be easy” no doubt you will get there, whatever it throws at you, we used to get fuel filter problems on older International trucks years ago it would take about 15 mins to stall because the fuel filter would start to float around the bowl due to the spring that held the filter place had rusted, stay safe cheers from Australia 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

You have a vacuum leak and need to replace 02 sensor and all fuel filters and clean the plugs and make sure all hoses are hooked up. Basically you need a tuneup on it because from sitting they all get gummed up

people, if the engine does not crank when you turn the key , it is a electrical problem all the way from the ignition switch to the battery ... has nothing to do with filters or liquids or fumes... and the filter(s) can be in many places depending on brand /models/years... guessing is not troubleshooting !

Keep your head up! Sounds like there is some type of vacuum leak, and I would check all fluids at this point then check fuel filter and possibly replace with a new one the check for spark cause we need both to keep her running!

@@sueevans3492 Hey Sue, it does have a primitive computer which used OBD1 technology, and there are code readers still available for testing. There are also ways to get the codes manually without the code reader. The current technology, OBD2, began in '96.

This could have happened while you were on the road with no family to help. I know its a set back but better to have it happen now while you have family to help then get stranded. Be safe

quite often, school buses have an emergency over ride on the back door. So if its open, the bus won't start. If you disconnected it when you gutted the bus, it may be telling the bus that the back door is open, so it won't start.

I can tell you on my bus! I I changed all the electrical stuff, I changed the fuel injectors, filters! And still was having problems! So I checked the pressure from the gas line, just looking at the gas coming out seem to be good! So check to see how much pressure you're getting from your gas line! And see how long it holds that pressure! If it does not hold that pressure steady. Then it's either a fuel pump going bad! Are in my case there's a little rubber hose that goes from the fuel pump to the metal line that had a crack in it! So it would run fine until the line pressured up! I had to pull my gas tank to get to the fuel pump! But if you have not covered it up with your floor! There may be an access door to get to the pump.

Jaybird there is a 3/8 vacuum port in front of the throttle body that the PCV gets vacuum it may have rubber ends and a plastic tube in the middle you should check the rubber it is bad about splitting and causing a leak good luck

Check for Engine light codes- Do a search but If I recall OBD 1 can use a paper clip to short 2 wires in the connector and it will flash the check engine light giving the code.

There a fuel filter on frame change it Keep trash out fuel to carburetor or if it's fuel injections keep it from your fuel injection pump and injectors a bit of trash can cause a lot of trouble

It sounds like a vacuum leak, check all of your vacuum lines for cracks, if they are brittle and if they are all attached. Take your time and check them all, PCV line, Brake booster line etc. I also recommend to you to replace the spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor & spark plug cables. For the Check Engine light you need a OBDI code reader to scan the codes. You can read them without a code reader, using a jumper from the ground terminal to the diagnostic terminal and entering diagnostic mode, you can also use a test light for this test, or you can get an OBDI to OBDII adapter or an OBDI code reader for cheap on ebay. It’s possible that the vacuum leak is causing a misfire code.

To cover cheaper bases, you may hose clamp any lose looking air intake hose or identify any creased or kinked 90°s in those hoses. If that doesn't do it, move to the next cheapest/ easiest possibility, the fuel filter. If the bus sat for a while before you bought it, the filter is most likely gunked up.

Hey check your vacuum lines for a leak. Plus the carburetor needs to be idle up a little . The idle mixture screw on the carburetor turn it a half a turn counterclockwise . That should do the trick

Vacuum leaks 1st. Pulse spray carbs pray around engine to find it as you spray at the Vacuum leaks the engine in you case will rev up a little with a little spray. Also drive it around and burn the older gas off or add +50% new 100 octane race fuel to the older gasoline eventually change fuel filter and do spark plugs and wires completing the tune up as possible.

Check Fuel system: fuel filter, fuel pump, injectors and fuel lines. Check ignition system: Spark plugs, distributer cap and wires. Hope you find the probe and fix it. As you know KZbin or google is your best friend when Looking for info about anything. Good luck!

Look for a split in a vacuum hose (the black tubing). They can be ok when cold, then the split opens up when hot. Spray on soapy water, or just bend the hoses and look for a split.

sounds like it is surging. Check for vacum leaks, which is all the small rubber vacum hoses, replace any that appear to be dry, cracked, and or rotted. One trick on ones you arent sure about is to shoot a little carb cleaner around where they hook up to the carb, etc, if the idle drops hard when you spray it, you found your leak.

Try unhooking the battery for a few minutes. hook it back up ans see how it acts. This will reset the computer and allow it to learn a new tune with the replaced IAC.

Only problem with that is there is no ECU, it’s to old! It’s a 93 not a 03! In 1996 most cars had ECU’s the engine in that is not that complex it is pretty easy to work on!

@@mrmotofy very good to know, I thought and was told different, thanks for the correction! I retract my previous statement! I looked up the model and year of the bus and didn’t see anything about an OBD 1or2 port? That would help with the diagnostics for sure!

@@mrmotofy with a vacuum leak you can use a carb cleaner and lightly spray it over the engine to see if it will suck any of the flammable aerosol in and raise the engine speed to determine the approximate location of the vacuum leak . then there are other things that can be done but a mechanic would have to be involved onsite or on a video chat to explain in more detail. if everything is told on here then it is taking revenue away for a person so that is less for that person and or their family

Possible fuelpump/filter and try spraying carb cleaner in carb and let it sit a while (says on can how long) and may need a coupe cleans.
