Don't buy from Carmax. Had a car I purchased in Buford GA. Bought a 2014 Ford Focus ST. Had 50K miles for 16 grand, was a great car. I jacked it up, and it was full of rust underneath. The battery terminals were corroded, the hood latch was rusty, and it smelt a little funny. Pulled up the rugs and low and behold, white rings of what looks like dead mold underneath the floor mat. I returned it and got my cash back with their 7 day policy! Never again! Don't even trust a dealership! I now drive a 1995 Ford Escort Wagon with a 5 speed. Payed 500 bucks for it and I'm as happy as I can be. Scotty knows what he's talking about.

Thanks for answering my email over this Scotty! We saw multiple high end cars and even bigger vehicles die out because the air intake was on the bottom of the car. I had a Subaru Crosstrek and the water didn't do much to it; the air intake was really high up and it had multiple reservoirs to empty out any water that potentially went that way. Safe driving everyone!

Very good video Scotty. My used car was under $1000 so if anything bad ever happened to it (water damage, major tranny damage...), I would just sell it for scrap value and buy another cheap one. It runs well and so far only thing I had changed on it were new rear brake rotors and new rear brake pads. Other than that it runs fine and even came with a nice new big battery. Cold AC too. What a deal! Oh yeah and some 6x9 three way speakers installed in the rear deck, a used K&N air filter, 1 replacement used tire in front, and a subwoofer will be going in the trunk over the winter months. What I really enjoy about the car (other than the low price and cold AC) is the manumatic tranny. If I have a slice of pizza in my hand, I use full automatic, otherwise I shift the 4 gears myself.

Scotty! As a college student I thank you for your knowledge.. As the 2nd owner of a 1997 Camry LE 2.2, It has seen a lot of highway to and from college. When my father bought the car from the auction, we did a full service overhaul of it. New spark plugs and wires, Engine oil, Transmission oil and filter, tires, shocks, etc. Then the power steering started to leak. New front end. Then coolant and engine oil started to leak. So we got new gaskets and a new radiator. Then the car had no brakes. New brake lines and brake pads. Talk about a lot of work! And it’s almost 200K miles.

The part of pulling the sparkplugs and then cranking the engine to get the water out of her brought a smile to this former locomotive engineer's face. The pre-start process for an EMD diesel engine startup required always openning up the side-cocks on the EMD engine cylynders and let the engine crank for several seconds. Then close the cocks and proceed to fire her up. Always a delight to follow you Scottie.

Everything you mentioned is true and I've found that a lot of people moving these flooded vehicles forget to change or thoroughly clean the seatblets... pull out the back seat belts to the max and lood for mud....pull the back seat cushion...sometimes even the front seatbelts, at the extreme extension. The #1 reason I've bought new over used is because you can't trust used car sellers. But I finally found a mechanic that is reliable and honest.

When checking for flood damage, look behind the door panels for flood damage or a water line. Also, check to see if the electric seat adjustment motor still works. If it's been in a flood, it won't.

I would be very careful about buying a car in the area I live it here in Arkansas due to the flooding we had here, and that down in the Houston area as well. You are so correct about people being smart when buying a used car or truck as there are so many out there which should have been junked to begin with after they came out of the water.

When I served in the USAF and lived in the Philippines one of my friend's cars was shipped over. At the dock, they dropped his car into the bay (Indian Ocean) and then hauled it up and contacted him they had his car, ready for pickup. When he got there, it had been sitting out in the hot sun for about a week....his story of it still cracks me up!! (Yes, the military reimbursed him but took forever, of course, nothing like government inefficiency!!)

I live in southeast Texas and got my house and car flooded from Harvey. Ended up going from Jefferson to a dry part Tyler County to buy a new car and it paid off. If you're in a similar situation and need a new car start looking somewhere you know stayed dry, even consider going a couple hours out of your way if you can spare the time and have someone that can bring you.

Great advice Scotty! There’s gonna be a lot more flood cars coming! The company I work for bought a bunch of Katrina work vans years ago... all developed electrical problems and died within a couple years. What sucks is that initially they looked so good. ☹️

Years ago a customer with a limo company bought a gorgeous dark blue late model Lincoln that had been pulled out of the ocean on the east coast. Took the gamble at auction, knowing that fact. He thought he had scored a great deal when he was able to get the water out of the engine and get it started, and it ran great. Body was gorgeous, engine and trans were fine, and everything worked. Well, if you have ever seen what salt water does to copper wires and connectors and other electronics.....this car was loaded...with power seats etc. etc. I remember when after a few months the trouble started....I found wiring harness connectors just disintegrating and crumbling away...after a while word got out about the car, and the Ford dealers in the area would not touch the car.....he couldn't find anyone who would touch it.
