This is awesome. I had a chain drive car too! 1969 subaru 360 van with a 600cc suzuki Kitana engine. I drove the factory trans with a chain. 24 forward gears and 6 reverse! Well done on your ride. It is very cool.

Maybe there is a way to make it lower to the ground? A pressurized oil tank and engine horizontal to the ground? Better for handling.

Those pod filters won’t cut it! There is a lot of tech that went into the air box design, more than most people understand. It smooths out the power delivery, it catches the reversion pulses and fuel in these pulses , meaning with out the airbox you will need to add fuel to make the engine run and its fuel consumption will suffer with out the airbox. Lastly most bike lose between 20 -30 hp when you remove the airbox and retune it. How do I know all this? I have been dyno tuning motorcycles for a very long time . I have seen this airbox removal many times , I have read engineering books on airbox design and I have a lot of time trying to design new air boxes for bike engines being turboed or engine swaps where the original airbox was not going to work. As I said there is a lot of design tech that goes into these factory air boxes and removing result in a horrible and pesky engine with a much narrower power and torque delivery and dead’s spot lower in the rpm , hesitations getting on the throttle etc. It will require a lot of retuning to get it to run half decent . Just trying to help

Are you going to use the rear engine mount? It looks to me like you're putting an awful lot of leverage on the two front engine mounts by not using that rear mount; consider that there is a lot of weigh in the back of the bike powerplant, where the transmission is, and it wasn't designed to have that weight hanging only from the front mounts. Maybe it'll be fine, I don't know. But maybe you'll hit a bump in the road and crack the thin + lightweight aluminium engine casings, dump all the oil onto the exhaust and rear wheels, destroy the motor and start a significant oil fire.

@Kneedragon1962
@Kneedragon1962 11 ай бұрын
That's really awesome. My only complaint about that, is it puts a lot of weight very high. Ok, I guess you're not building a gokart, you're re-powering a 1960s Italian sportscar in a shoe-box, but ... I love the choice of components and concepts, but I'd like the engine to be sitting at least 6 ~ 8 inches lower ~ preferably 12. ---- Thought experiment. Start with a Porsche Boxter. Now take the bodywork off and turn it into a 1960s formula one car ~ no side-pods, looks like a torpedo. Now compare your Boxter formula one, to this. How are they different? A: Your Porsche has massively radically lower centre of gravity. Thank you ~ that's my point.

Just subscribed! I like your thinking, The easy way... or the Expensive way! I want to know if you have driven much with the short chain? I built my bike engine Smart and the chain is the noisy, high maintenance part. I was thinking about the Quaife bike engine units that do not use a chain. Any thought?

I’ve put about 1500 miles on it. The chain seems fine although it did stretch a little at first.

@JNH Classics do you have an oiler like a schott oiler or do you just oil the chain as needed? I built mine in a pinch and used the chain from the bike that has tight spots and it causes my engine to have a warble and shake under load. I have a new design for my differential and I will replace the chain with a new one and add the schott oiler.
@Jerod_Helt
@Jerod_Helt Жыл бұрын
I don’t use an oiler. I used a new sealed chain and haven’t had any problems yet.

Hi Jerod. I am working on a motorcycle engine powered autocross car so have to say your project is really cool. I need to build custom cv axles like you did. Wondering if the axles are still holding up and not producing any vibration or other issues? Anything you would do differently if you did them again? Thanks in advance for any tips.

Amazing build! I am looking into buying a quaife diff. What ratio reduction do you have on your differential and how is your sprocket setup? Do you also know where I can get sprockets that fits the splines on the differential?
@Jerod_Helt
@Jerod_Helt Жыл бұрын
The Quaife diff has a 3.025 reduction. It was hard to find sprockets to fit the diff. I had to buy the taper lock adaptor from Quaife then I bought sprockets from MDS. Just google "MDS Sprockets" and you should find them. I used the (Taper-Lock Sprocket, #50BTL20). It's probably better to get the diff with the keyed shaft rather than the splined shaft so you don't need the adapter and have more options for sourcing the sprockets.
