We took apart a Hayabusa engine to find out how this tiny engine is capable of deadly speeds… and then tried to put it back together. Easy, right?

As someone who made connecting rods for motorcycles for a good while, I think it's VERY important to look at that bushing in the rod/wrist pin and see if there's wear marks. On a motor putting out as much power as a friggin BUSA, revving as high as it does, I wouldn't be surprised if they were toast (depending on mileage/abuse), and that will blow a motor. I'm not sure how many bikes have bushings in the top end of the rods, but it's a very nice touch for very well engineered bike. ALSO 9:01 is why you tape a cloth to the top of your rods when assembling a motor like this. Any ding on the case could break a seal.

That’s not entirely correct bud, you still need the HP and torque on an engine and a light frame for that engine to sit on also as established before looks have nothing to do with the speed of a vehicle the ricer community in the car world has demonstrated that flawlessly that cosmetics have no effect on how the car performs and what truly matters is how much power you have at the wheels and how much weight you have to move when driving/taking off from a complete stop and often times “aerodynamic parts” can often slow down a stock vehicle with low horsepower and low torque but given the bikes engine has 175 hp and the bike is light there’s enough power to get it to 200mph!

1:00 - Actually, the looks have a lot to do with its ability to reach 200MPH. When Engineers were designing the Hayabusa, they were looking to achieve the most aerodynamic body panel designs possible. It's designed to slice through the air as well as encapsulate the rider in a pocket virtually eliminating any drag that's otherwise seen on other less aggressive body designed bikes. Now while the engine is a fast revving high power output platform, it by itself can't achieve 200MPH. The body design is needed to coincide to make the fastest 200MPH speed happen. So the statement our Host made about it being very fast is done by the engine and not the looks, is inaccurate.

FYI on most sport bikes like the busa. The transmission is designed to be shifted without the clutch. Even without a quick shifter. It's the same design as those sequential dog boxes that you car guys use. Only need to clutch when taking off or stopping. Shifting you can just blip the throttle and rip into the next gear.

In general you're right, but in experienced hands, a slip of the clutch can often assist shifting under full throttle. Principally we need to create an " unloading " of the gear dogs momentarily to allow shift drum and fork to push the gear into the next gears dog. Either cutting fuel, cutting ignition or in this case slipping the clutch at full throttle creates that unloading and bam our sequential gearbox shifts ! Much love from Alberta Canada 🇨🇦

I love the idea at the end. Can't wait to see how it turns out. Also, not to piss in anyone's cheerios, but whoever told you that a 'busa would go "well over" 200mph with the limiter removed was wrong. That first gen might INDICATE over 200mph on the speedometer but you won't be going as fast as indicated. It takes modification on any busa to hit an honest 200mph. Once you complete your build, I'd love for you guys to use GPS or radar and show your new top speed. 😁 Please?.... I've had a couple of Busas and I really want to see this.

I rebuilt an anniversary edition and then I didn't like riding it. It was comfortable to sit on but felt too big for the twisties... now I'm in my 40s and let's say I value the size and comfort of the busa a bit more 😂😅😢

Put it in the Miata!! Always love seeing tiny sportscars with powerful, high revving motorcycle engines. It would be dope and pretty unique. Would love to watch a whole series or at least mini-series on doing this swap

Only issue is it would actively make the miata weaker, and they've already put tons of money and work into the miata.

The Hayabusa is one of the most docile feeling motorcycles I've ever rode. It's a sports tourer at heart that's capable of high speed...but there's nothing particularly scary about it. It is a linear power delivery, super stable, and you're sitting behind a very calm pocket of air due to excellent wind protection.

Disappointed to hear Donut repeating the same ol’ urban legend of this bike doing “well over 200mph”. It never did that, “Gentlemen’s Agreement” or otherwise. The highest recorded top speed for a stock production Hayabusa in its heyday was 194mph.

The first thing my father taught me when I started dismantling bicycles when i was a kid is that the material is always right and if it doesn't go in properly it's not with force or with a hammer that will make it go in.

I own an 05. Best most reliable bike ive ever owned. 35k on the clock and i bet the valves are still in spec. Fires right up every time. Ive lowered it and made some adjustments. Tightened the gap on the plugs to about .023 and it runs crisp after about 2k rmps. Ill keep playing around with it. Best bike to learn on because its over built. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking. I bet these engines could get 100k if taken care of.

The looks are function over form - yeah its weird and blobby but the aerodynamics are extremely good, especially for their time. Aero on bikes is wild, the aerodynamic drag on a bike with rider is somewhere between a pickup truck and a full articulated truck cab. There's a reason world record speed bikes are full bubbles.

I had a 2001 I bought new…… I think that was the year….. it was whatever year the last unrestricted one came out. It was blue and grey and beautiful. I maxed that thing at an indicated 213mph or so. All I remember is the tach around 11-12grand in 6th gear and the wind in my back trying to rip me off of the thing. Unreal fast bike. Crazy torque.

There used to be a company on Vancouver Island in BC that imported Caterham 7's and put Hayabusa engines in them. They were reportedly absolutely srupid fast. Wish I had got one but the owner, David Saville Peck, passed away a couple years ago and no more are being made.

1:13 not early 2000s. 80s-90s Japanese manufacturers were competing with each other trying to make the fastest bike. This culminated in the Hayabusa gen 1 release in 1999 with a top speed of over 300km/h and it would be restricted to 299 in 2001 with the gen II (people would find a way to tune the gen 2 for more power than the gen 1). The gentleman's agreement made after the gen 1 was why the gen 2 was limited as manufactures feared the government would step in if things kept going the way they were.
