Absolutely emphasising the idea that if you diversify your knowledge, you can take all kinds of twists in an environmental science career. I majored in climate science and environmental law but ended up working all kinds of places including public forest management, private land conservation, not-for-profit sustainability research and planning consultancy. There's indoor work and outdoor work or a mix of both too!

I have just discovered my passion for environmentalist and ecology... and I so wish went to college for it back in the day. Instead, I went for office management... and then 2nd career nursing. I'm 33 now. Graduated nursing school in 2012, and still don't have a stable, full-time job that I like. I thought my priority was to help people, turns out I want to help the planet and animals a lot more.

Ana M I can relate to you for sure. I didn’t finish nursing school yet but was going start here soon and was a cna for years now and before that majoring in what made more money pretty much what my parents wanted me to do ie: lawyer, pharmacist, accountant. Took a break and followed my instincts at now 30 and going back to school to follow my passion my entire life pointed to since I could remember and it’s in environmental science. Don’t get discouraged at all. I’m in debt with student loans but could care less I did not want to complete a degree in something that isn’t me or what I am not happy in. I have a lot of nursing friends and majority are not happy it’s just good money. Not saying it’s a bad field it’s not I’ve seen miracles happen and it’s a huge field itself but now some are like us going back to school to major in what they should have done. Good luck and follow your heart!

This was actually very helpful. I'm 25, just starting University (because my high school decided I was destined for the trades and refused to let me into the proper classes to qualify me for uni until I hit mature student status). When I applied on a whim I was told to try sociology, so that's where I've been for two semesters. It's fine, just way too theory based, asking for opinion rather than stats. Where I am in Canada only 3% of degrees offered can guarantee you a job post-grad, and also here a sociology degree gets a person a blue vest and Wal-Mart orientation, so I'm switching fields. In my University, there's one degree in it, Global Sustainability, comprised of 9 credits of Environmental Sustainability, and one Aboriginal Studies class of my choosing. I chose Global Sustainability because I'm big on recycling and green initiatives, but also because as far as I know, it's pragmatic, not theory based, it's logical. So I wouldn't, say, have to write a five page essay theorizing why farmers drive slow on the highway, a "thought exercise" worth 30% of my grade in Sociology lol. What I'm looking to find out, and why I'm on this video. I'm doing school full-time next semester and wanna get a feel for the curriculum of most of these type of classes. What do the assignments look like? What are the lectures like? If you could let me know that would be great.

Hi girl! I didn't know you had an environmental degree, that's awesome. I'm a chemist who used to work analysing environmental sample, it was fun but depending on where you work it can be stressful (it is a very competitive career), I didn't finished my PhD because I lost my motivation but it was a great experience. If you like it go for it, analysing samples and then the data is very interesting since you need to have a lot of knowledge to connect the dots and understand all the data. I hope you get the opportunity to get your dreamed job!

Im majoring in Environmental science. My degree program has a specific emphasis on Ecology, and my minor is chemistry. I'm in my junior year and it's been a great experience so far but extremely difficult. The majority of my classes are biological sciences, physics, chemistry, geology, and math. I've seen a lot drop out because I do think some go in without looking at what the classes entail. Definitely would recommend looking at the course load before deciding.

Hi! My name is Mia and I’m a junior in high school (I’m applying to colleges quite soon!). I took an AP Environmental Science class this year, and fell in love with it! I would love to do what you also would love to do (backpacking and getting samples and doing research), but I was wondering HOW you could do that. Basically I’m asking are there actually a lot of jobs that offer that type of work?, how much is the pay?, etc. I’ve been researching for months and I’m pretty sure I want to go into this field, but I also do not want to be in tons of student loan debt and be living scraping up money because my major has no job opportunities. Thank you sooo much! This video helped me tons! Would you recommend I go into Environmental Science as a major, as I definitely am not a business type person ( I don’t see myself working with the EPA lime u mentioned that your friend did). I go to UCR (Riverside, Ca) and I’m a sustainability studies major. Basically it’s a mixture of gender studies, feminism, and environmentalism and links how the environment is degraded by social and political forms of domination. It’s a great major and I’ve learned a lot but I’m about to graduate and feel like i don’t have clear paths on getting a job. I’m super passionate about the environment, anti racism, feminism, and LGBTQ issues but not so much research.,I probably need to do more research on what options I have but I don’t even know what to research 🙃 I’ve been going on LinkedIn trying to find anything related to veganism, zero waste, gardening, etc but not much luck. I’ve applied to be an intern at a water bottle company but haven’t heard back. Scary times but I’m sure I’ll find a fulfilling job sometime. My dream is to have any sort of positive impact that is better for all kinds of people, animals, and the environment.

We are in the exact same boat. I am a junior at the University of Florida and I am currently taking a semester off to regroup and figure out what the hell it is I am going to do with my sustainability studies major. I love this major but it doesn't directly relate to any careers. I'm currently doing research on all sorts of different careers, and plan on getting experience in something through internships and some volunteering with the rest of my time as an undergrad student because I know it's too late to change my major altogether. It is tough because sustainability can relate to any field, but it doesn't directly correlate to specific careers.

I know it's gearing me towards a job in environmental law, but like you would like to eventually go into research/research ethics. My end goal in education would to get my masters in an environmental chemistry degree and a phd in epistemology (study of knowledge) and to be a research professor. My question to you would be what would a degree in sustainability be gearing me towards for a career, minus my other degrees?

Network! Volunteer! Get out there! I graduated last year with an Environmental Sciences degree and had no prior industry experience; I started to volunteer (which is great for your CV) and get to know people, I'd help professors with their research (which resulted in having fantastic recommendation letters), I'd message people on Linkedin asking for advice on starting out your career or if they were looking for interns/volunteers, I'd email companies with my CV.... Many did not reply, but I still got replies (even if it was to inform me that they were not looking for someone), and finally started to get invited for interviews, until i managed to get a job just by pursuing it. Don't be afraid to get out there and do some "free" work, getting ahead in your career is sometimes more about who you know rather than what you know (unfortunate, but true).
@bubbualex123

Thank you so much for your advice!! Haha I slowly came to terms with doing volunteer work. How did you approach professors about their research? Did you email them asking for help or did you go up to them face to face? I would actually love to do that, and I would love to know the approach you took. Also, I randomly applied for an internship (even though I didn't have the experience or licensing they said were "essential"), and I landed an interview then was able to impress them face to face. I got the position and it is a great opportunity to gain experience. Don't underestimate the power of a good cover letter!!

Always in person; At my university every student had a "personal tutor" a mentor if you will, who was one of your professors and I'd just take advantage of that to get to know my tutor and pick his brain and discuss where I'd like to go with my career, I would also try to engage more with my other professors by going to meet them about assignments and ask how i could improve; this also allows them to get to know you as a person. Try to look up your porfessors and find out what research they do, then go talk to them about it, they looove talking about their research :) and if one of them is doing something that you think is what you'd like to do, ask if you can help somehow or if they got any tips on how to start out in that field.

I wish i would have done more research and been 'brave' enough to change my major sooner. I originally was a meteorology major then a double major with meteorology and oceanography. Then my very last semester switched to be an earth science major. So basically I have all the math/physics classes but no policy classes. So my degree is in earth science with a minor in oceanography. Still trying to figure out what I want to do with that. Your job seems very interesting! Advice to everyone out there: GET AN INTERNSHIP or experience while you are in college!!!

I have a passion for making change hence my channel name. I want to be outside getting info and helping nature. I have no experience in this, I am bad at maths and find work loads too much which results in myself getting poor mental health as I cant brake my self away from what I am doing. I understand and study in my own time about climate change, ocean acidification, the gulf stream, ocean dead zones and eco systems. I'm crazy about it like all of you. It is in my hart to go down this route. My fear is noting being intelligent enough, not saying I am dumb, far from it. I have two options on my plate which is becoming an outdoor instructor in the outdoor industry, like out door recreation what ever you want to call it or this, something like this. I also fear the amount of years I will study for will be in thin in the context of change I can make externally to a conservation cause. I have so many ideas and projects I am working on to get people thinking about the issues we all face along with people what help me. I need real advice. I won't want to do something which takes a decade when we only have a decade left until the start of the claps. I am so conflicted with this.

i do env science in the uk and i think the best way to describe it is a mixture of chemistry, biology and geography. the sectors u want to go in are really broad, lots of science so research can be done in anything. i think the consulting sector is huge but i havent heard much about the policy/governance side of it but maybe that’s just my specific degree

Hi Shelby! I saw that your DMs on Instagram weren't open anymore but I wanted to ask you a question. I am an Environmental Science major and trying to figure out what I'm going to do. I feel like the major has been really broad and it's hard to decide what I'm going to do with it since there are so many different paths. I am very interested in plants so I was thinking something like soil science, plant science/botany. Do you think I would need more education to pursue this? or is this something that I would be able to jump right into?

I am majoring in Environmental management, but I am still trying to determine what exactly or what I specifically want to go into. I am currently looking for internships and kind of trying to learn about environmental career field. I have never thought about looking on indeed and seeing what’s out there that way, so thanks!

WOW GIRL! TFS! You are a really deep individual for your age. If i had been exposed to your field as a girl, i would hv choosen an enviromental field. I am 46 almost 47yr old now and disabled so even considering something educationally changing is crazy absurd. You are the "nerd" (lol)i would hv been at your age with the exposures you hv. I ended up being a numbers geek in accounting and business with customer service aspects and number crunching. I also had background in the 80s with the early computer tech and i excelled in this but ultimately droped it due to life circumstances and went with the bookkeeping and number crunching. STUPID ME! #LIFE. Keep up the goid work. I look for you to become one of the grest enviromentalists in the future and i expect to be seeing you name in headlines in the years to come. Persue your dreams. If your dream is to hv that PhD, GO GET IT! You are only young once and life gets ahead of you before you even realize. I never realized when i was your age n people said i was still a baby or young, what they meant till now at my age. I felt like an adult, i was living an adult life already. If i had known what was out there my career path would hv been much different. I wasnt sheltered by any means but my world was small. #regretsinlife. GO FOR IT HUN!

I would add that there are other reasons to work in the private sector other than the money. I always thought I would end up working in the public sector, and I used to think that was all there was in the environmental field. When I was in high school I thought I wanted to work for the EPA. All of the summer internships I took in college and grad school were with state and local governments (except a few summers of research with professors). And those experiences really turned me off of working for the government. Things happened very slowly, there were a lot of people who hated their job, and people were bad at their jobs but didn't face any consequences. I'm just speaking from my own experience and for where I lived. I ended up working for a consulting firm and I write environmental impact documents for transportation projects. I like it better for a number of reasons. I think there's more pressure to do a good job, which is good for me in a work environment. Also, the more complicated projects get contracted to consulting firms so I get to work on more interesting projects and have more of an opportunity to influence projects that may have larger environmental impacts than if I worked for the state government. I also make more money, which is nice, but it's not my main reason for working where I do. Also, another private sector job you may not have thought of is innovate start up companies. I went to grad school with a girl who started her own company (it's called the bee Corp of anyone wants to check it out). The work on developing technology to help address the decline in bee populations. Just thought I would add another perspective on the subject. I love your channel, keep up the good work!

I’m an environmental SCIENCE major, which a lot more research-based than an environmental STUDIES (which sounds like what she did and is a lot of politics). My goal is to be a field biologist, going out into the field and performing surveys and research. There’s also marine biology, you can work for the national park service or US geological survey, etc.

So you work for DEQ as an Air Specialist? I would also like to mention soil sustainability is a thing if you're in the agricultural part of the world as well as city planning. ArcGIS and CAD modeling has a huge job market, people need GIS mappers. I worked as a Floodplain Administrator for a year and worked along side FEMA, in mapping out floodplains and NFIP (national floodplain insurance). Now I work as a federal aid administrator distributing grants within the state. I mainly work on Waste Reduction and Recycling Grants for political subdivisions and organizations. There's so much you can honestly do with an EVS degree so get out there and research!

@stephanieandrewchesnet691
@stephanieandrewchesnet691 3 жыл бұрын
@@Daniela-ti4pu I can tell you what the difference is just in general for a BA and BS. BA is focused more with writing, humanities, and arts. BS is more research-based, science and math related. Generally BS has a few more classes you take and is more in-depth of that specific major.

Heyy girl, I'm going to college next year and I'm having a really hard time deciding... I defenitely want a career where I can make a difference in the world concerning sustainibility, for example to develop more eco friendly products or find sustainable solutions for energy. An obvious choice is Sustainibility Science, which is just a really basic bachelor where you study climate change and other problems. But I'm not sure whether that is 'concrete' enough to really make a difference... so I started looking at Industrial Design etc. I could use my skills that I learn there to sneak some eco friendly stuff into redesigns of everyday products ;). But the programme is not sustainibility-oriented at all and so I will have to do a lot of things throughout the years that I do not like and I will have to fight for my opinion because there are no like-minded people... Do you have any thoughts? I'm so torn... Xxx

I could recommend NOTHING more for environmental science majors (or all majors) than to READ THE CURRICULUM at your potential school!!!!! I went into school earning an enviro science degree that focused on biology when that's really not what I personally want to do. If I read the descriptions more thoroughly I likely would've known I didn't want to do that.

@angieb211
@angieb211 5 жыл бұрын
@@sgnMark Sorry to butt in here lol but it depends on what you're interested in! Biology will (probably) focus a lot on ecology, hydrology and soil studies. Good for environmental conservation. Geology has the most math and tricky concepts - some which confuse me still and I'm in 4th year. But it provides a LOT of travel opportunities and you can study a lot of cool courses like classes just about rocks, space, and even environmental catastrophes. Geography will focus highly on GIS, maps, and stats (though with Geology you need to take at least one stat class too, at least at my uni). If you're a computer person, might be worth your while. It's all dependent on what you're interested in and what speaks to you. Really ask yourself, what's my favourite part of environmental science? Then go from there!

So to make life more complicated (haha) I am 60 and just throwing caution to the wind and returning to finish my Bachelor's degree. Its between a BGS with emphasis in Geoscience or a BA in Environmental Geoscience. What are you thinking about the prospects for employment for someone my age? Seriously, what first crossed your mind as you read this? I don't see retiring as it just isn't productive or appealing to me. I don't care if it's part-time work, just so it's something that in some way is fulfilling to me late in life. I've NEVER had that. I am active. I hike, backpack, and dive. I hope to stay that way forever. ??
