Russell is still a cat. He will lie when he feels like it. His lies will be more sophisticated than how my cats lie. My cats only use two basic lies "I meant to do that" and "it wasn't me, I am just taking a bath". I should note that at my house, there are puffies anywhere a puffy could get lost during a game of puffy soccer. If that closet was at my house, there would be a large variety of cat play things on the floor.

Might be even smarter than you think, because he didn’t go for the puffies right off and he seemed to want to explore the space more than anything else, so I think it’s reasonable to wonder whether he knew from experience you would help him with puffy retrieval, and pushed a couple of puffies under the door to get you to open it and let him in.

This! Growing up we had outdoor cats and one would push a kitten through a hole in the screen door so that we would need to open the door to put the kitten back outside. Then, the cat would run in the house. This happened until we shut the door so it was definitely on purpose. It clearly looked like Russell was doing something similar....push his toy under the door then he would get to explore a space that is mostly off limits.

Our cat, Sugar was an indoor-outdoor cat. In the warm months, we had a second screen door at the door from the garage to the house. When she wanted to come in, Sugar would grab the screen door with her claws, and open it, then let go, resulting in a sound like a big, loud, double-knock on the door. We knew it was Sugar's "knock", because the door would bang twice!! Smart! My friend, Jerry, had a house where there was a concrete mantle-type ledge around the house, leading to the front door, and the doorbell. Their family also had an indoor-outdoor cat. When ready to come in,, that cat would jump up to that ledge, walk to the front door, and ring the doorbell!! Smart!!

Oh my. My one kitty(she's long gone now) always wanted out and would cry at the door. As a rescue she loved being outside (I live rural so its fairly safe for my animals to be outside) so instead of the yowling I hung bells on the door. I taught her to jingle the bells to go out. This worked great for a year. Then I'd hear the jingle. Go to let her out and she ran to the water dish. No water. Jingle jingle. No food. Jing jingle-the litter was too dirty for her. I slowly realized I had become her bell slave! Lol. I miss that little black furball. My other cats just sit on my head or get in my face till I get up to figure it out. I told my hubs im tempted to grab about 6 buttons and start training them for food/water/ outside etc... but geez i wait on these stinkers enough already. Hum. Wonder if I can get the dog in on it too?

My cat knows exactly how to "high five". With a treat in my hand we have a 100% success rate. Without a treat? 50% chance he'll blankly stare at me. I read an interesting article about a scientist who has spent years studying animal behavior. After working on facial recognition with fish (they do recognize faces!) He decided to study cats. He said regardless of setting/incentives/etc, getting the cats to cooperate was incredibly difficult. After the study was completed, he said he'd rather work with fish. Lol!
@pleasantry2.042 жыл бұрын
@@THXx1138 That's not true at all.
@MrJest22 жыл бұрын
@@pleasantry2.04 Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. Like people, some cats are smarter than others. But after living with cats for 50-some years, I can assure you it's more often true than not. Humans tend to infantilize cats, but it's important to remember that after about 6 months, they are fully conscious and willful adults, with their own needs, desires, and agendas. They also don't think precisely the same way we do about the same things. What we may see as important they may see as trivial or even nonsensical, and same goes the other way 'round.
@pleasantry2.042 жыл бұрын
@@MrJest2 My point is that, there is no way a cat actually understands what a human is saying unless they've been taught to respond to certain words and even then, it's as it says, just them responding to certain words not really understanding it in the same way a person does.

Cats are pretty bright. Sometimes you have to "translate from cat", because in some ways they think very differently than humans, but with some experience it's not difficult to do. It also helps if your cat is smart enough to "grok" the whole concept of spoken language, but most do. We have three; two of them clearly understand a lot, one actually uses "speech" (he makes up his own cat noises for certain things that we have to figure out by context), one understands but hasn't made the leap to using it herself, and our eldest, although very sweet and affectionate, is dumb as a box of rocks. 😛 Someday I need to get some of those buttons and see if the youngest "talking" kitty can figure out how to use them...

I don't understand the reaction from everyone. If he was playing with it and in the process went under the door ... then, of course, he knows it's in there. 🤷 Additionally, since cats do not like closed or locked doors, (due to their overwhelming curiosity) it's more likely he shoved the puffy under there as an excuse to try and get in. As you will have noticed, the moment the door was opened he didn't immediately go to rescue the puffy, instead he decided to check out the other things in there. Also, Russel is clearly a human trapped in a cat's body
