My Cat is Stressed!
What you don’t know can hurt you, your home, and of course your cat! In this video, I take a look at the 3 pillars of cat stressors which can manifest in various degrees but can lead to illness and behavioral blowback. I will discuss the signs to look for so that you can identify stress in your cats before it’s too late. Most importantly I will discuss what you can do to not only “fix problems” but prevent them from manifesting in the first place.

When I volunteered with cats at the shelter, there was one little cat that did nothing but hide. It turns out, she was a return. Her owner’s apartment had been broken into by little hellions who terrorized the cat. After that, the cat was so scared that she started pooping on the owner’s bed regularly. The employees at the shelter were frustrated, because they wanted time to work with the owner to help with the behavior, but the owner just couldn’t deal with it. So the poor little cat not only had her home terrorized, but she was also brought to the shelter, making it all worse. I could never understand how people can just get rid of pets at the first sign of difficulty. Then again, one family returned a cat to the shelter after two weeks because it didn’t give them enough _eye contact_. They felt like they couldn’t bond enough with the cat. Nothing will surprise me now.

@@marleneslichter3472 They do that at the adoption centres and shelters here. They also have you make appointments so the state can come out and see your new pet's house. It's a little much but I can see where they're coming from. All of my cats have been rescues. I've never had state come out to my house but it's nice to know they do that when necessary.

My Dad came to visit for a few days. He has 2 dogs. My cat was fine while he was here but after he left she peed on the bed he had been using. I stripped the bed, changed out all the sheets etc and then used my pajamas as scent soakers on the bed. She’s happier now and we’ve had no more accidents.

I know this is an old comment but just in case it helps someone now, this is a sign that the cat wasn't fine while he was there. The cat was just masking that discomfort until he left. It's like the difference between telling someone to their face they're an asshole and saying it once they leave. The former can cause a confrontation you're not prepared to deal with; the latter is a way of trying to get your confidence back afterwards.

My cat was somewhat like that too! Brought her home a month or two ago. Shes my dads cat that used to be mine when I lived with him. She hated the downstairs at first, but my room? She adored and still adores it to the point it’s our room. Since then though, she owns the entire cat. I don’t think she’s strong as much as she is blissfully unaware.

We moved our 3 cats from Michigan to Oregon, 8 years later moved to Texas , 4 years later here to Colorado. As long as you get the new home ready first the cats are pretty resilient. But we take the furniture, bedding, cat tree's and place them in the new home first. One of those three cats moving with us just died at age 21. I think a cat would rather move than be left behind!

Thanks Jackson, my senior rescue cat lives in a very low stress home which is essential to her health as she has a heart condition and is 19.5 years old. She came to me at 15 years old very timid and afraid of most people. The shelter advised me that she would hide and personally came to help her settle. She had made herself at home on the sofa before I had even signed her adoption papers. I think the thing that helped her the most was, whilst she was still in foster care, I had given the carers an umwashed throw from my bed and a clean freshly washed tshirt so she would know what her new home smelt like before she moved in. She is now a confident and content cat who is interested in visitors and greets neighbours. The shelter has given me much help and behavioural advice very similar to that in your videos. Your videos have really helped me understand the behaviours and ways of my cat.

Yes, I did similar for my rescue before coming home together. Put a carrier in the room with her, with my worn t-shirts (we had already bonded, but I was not cat-ready, so had some prep before coming home with me). Poor thing had been 8 months in 'the system', and was a super stressy kitty (6yo). She was a couple of months in the pound, taken into the rescue centre, had two different fosters, two failed adoptions, and back and forth to the rescue centre. Plus, I strongly suspect she had come from a DV home before that - she freaks out at yelling, or smacking (as the first failed adopter had done). We are five months in, and she is really starting to get a lot more confidence (she was settled about 6-8 weeks in, but still scared of everything). She still has a little ways to go, I figured a good 8-12 months to leave most of that trauma behind her. She will get there, I have had other trauma rescues before, takes time for them to completely relax. I also got her off the dreaded kibble, and while she is still only on a 50% raw diet, 50% premium wet, she is now getting close to her ideal weight. My goodness she weighed a lot when I brought her home!

Jackson, here is one I found for the first time with this cat. Handcrafting! I started doing things with my hands while watching TV. TV time used to be pet me time. He started peeing and I could not understand it at first. Then it clicked in the stupid human brain, it was I was not petting as I was working with my hands! As soon as I got it, and put down the thing in my hand to pet and belly rub, it stopped. Since I "got it" he will come the second he sees me with something, I put it down and pet/belly rub, he will wallow in it for a time and then get up and go sleep someplace else so I can get back to working with my hands again. I hope this helps you and others with their cats that would of never thought of this either. It was stress thinking that object meant more to me than him.

Thanks for this Jackson. I've recently had this experience with my 5-year-old Henry. He is an indoor /outdoor cat who prefers to pee outside. He has a big litter tray indoors but he hasn't used it in about a year. I started noticing he was licking his private parts a lot. He also started staring at me and herding me toward his litter tray, he'd get in it and show me that nothing was coming out. (so smart!) Off to the vet we go and yep, he had a urinary tract issue due to stress and was given a shot to make him pee and pain meds for a week. All good for a couple of weeks, then same again, back to the vet and same meds but also "urinary tract" food prescribed that cost a million bucks. Before all this started, I was encouraging crows to come on my balcony, love their intelligence! I believe that was the issue for Henry's stress, crows hanging out, getting fed and partying on our balcony. Stopped partying with the crows, much to their chagrin! I've kept up with the special food (found a cheaper brand) and all has been well for about 6 months. I had never heard of this issue before and learned a lot. Wow, I've just about written a small novel here! Thanks again Jackson. ᓚᘏᗢ

My 9 year old tabby has just been diagnosed 4 weeks ago with diabetes 😢 she needs injections twice a day and on vet prescribed food. I am her chill pill, when I say to her ‘its alright’ if she is anxious on hearing something she physically relaxes, I am her most trusted hoooman The first week of injections were were not too bad she let me do them without complaint while having her breakfast. Then she got sore even though I was trying to vary the injection sites. (Understandable } She went into distrusting me and fearful and hiding. Then we had a small breakthrough. Anger instead of fear. She got mad at me, bating me with her paw and hissing at me. She is the most gentle and timid of pusscats and this was a good sign, she had overcome her fearfulness and fighting back. Having said that I have not encountered one scratch or fierce bite. It is breaking my heart putting her through this ordeal. In between injections she now trusts me again and we are back to our usual snuggles and interactions. I have a number of autoimmune diseases and often bed bound so we spend just about all our time together. She knows what I am about to do before I do😂 she sits outside the bathroom door waiting for me to come out again, she is just amazing and we are so content together. If you know any tips or strategies to help this situation I would be so very grateful. I just want the best for her😢 I know it is still early days, some days are better than others which I know is all par for the course.

I got about 10 scratch posts, a cat tree, toys, litter boxes, fleecy blankets, heated blankets, tunnels etc. before we adopted our bonded pair of kittens (they’re brothers). Despite moving being traumatic, they moved in with us without any problems. It took them a while to warm up to us but they didn’t give us any trouble. Preparation is essential if you’re thinking of adopting a cat (or cats; a bonded pair is a joy to have)

I must say, I recently moved over 10 hours away from where my 2 boys marked as their territory. And once we got here I opened the carriers and they instantly took to the new place. It's like their mojo x10000 compared to the old house. But I think what helped is that I've raised them as 'travel' cats. Not sure if it was wrong? But since kittens I've shown them where I am is home, they are always safe. When I left on holiday I would take them with me, if I went to visit someone far away, they would come with me. As long as I am with them, have food and water and they can sleep in the bed I sleep in they are happy little kits. I've never had a stress problem with them as those that Jackson mentions. The only time I've had territory peeing was when a new person moved into the house but once they saw they were a friend they stopped. Thank you for this Jackson, I've shared this with all the friends I have that own kitties 💜

@jennifermuir5750
@jennifermuir5750 Жыл бұрын
Look up the episode in, "My Cat From Hell.". He's done one already, actually, repeatedly. You can do shelf steps, where the cat jumps up, gradually. They want to be up high. You want to create a, "Cat Super Highway," (up off the ground, so the cat doesn't have to touch the floor, AT ALL) and can make it all around the room, in a complete circle. The best shelf, would be the highest one, and I would make it really long... going around the room, up high, close to the ceiling. I bet you find that's where your cat hangs out the most, once you do it. They LOVE to hover, and watch new people, from above, especially, when one has visitors. It'd be great, IF, your cat had his/her "Super Highway" up, circling the room, like those old trains that were up high.

I want to thank you so so much. You have just explained to me all the questions I had about my cats quirky behaviours but never knew how to ask a vet. I’ve deducted they’re both experiencing territorial stress. My cats constantly sit at the front 2 windows of my house and I have heard them fighting through the windows the stray cats on the outside of the house. There’s no protection. My 2 cats have started fighting more and one mounts the other and bites the back of his neck frequently. They also do the walk walk *GROOM* walk AND both frequently vomit. My poor babies. That room with the windows is their “Basecamp” and I just now know I’ve just been causing them significant stress 😢😢😢 one of my cats recently got a urinary blockage and the vets don’t seem to know why - I’m betting stress. Just like you said. I feel so guilty. I’ve closed that room door to them for now and have moved their cat tower to the family room, placing scent soakers everywhere, buying feliway diffusers tomorrow and am gonna play with them till I die. Thank you for sending this video to me, I had no clue, I just thought they were weird cats and brothers r fighting. How long does it typically take to start seeing positive changes in stressed out cats after making changes? 😪

This helped me refocus, thank you! I didn’t recognize my cats sudden vomiting as stress. I just brought a new puppy into the home 2 weeks ago and my cat started vomiting. Well, yesterday he was struggling to use the bathroom and I noticed blood on his privates. I took him into the vet immediately. They were unable to see him bc he gets so stressed at the vets he tried to attack them. This is all so eye opening to me but the vet suggested it was stress related and I feel like your video has solidified that. Thank you! 🥺🤞🏻🙏🏼

Thanks for this video Jackson. We have rescue cats, and it actually started with someone asking me if I would take in this little kitten , with the sadest story. No one wanted her and I know if someone with no experience took her in, she would probably end up with new homes a lot of times, because rescues can have some strange behaviour and this one has some issues like being really sensitive and insecure = she gets stressed really fast. But we have found a special diet and other things to do with the help of the vet. And of all of our rescues she is my most precious furbaby, and the one who gives me the most worry but she is worth it, and the others are mostly really good at helping her when it is bad

I adopted two sister cats just recently. They're 5 years-old, have spent their entire lives together but I can see how the stress from moving into a new family has affected one of them because she hisses at her sister whenever she comes too close. Hopefully, once she's getting used to the new place, they both can go back to being best buds like the owners described them to be before!

Hey jackson, can you make a video on the grooming in itself? To help determine if a cat is overgrooming or not? That would really help!
@serahp5585
@serahp5585 3 жыл бұрын
A cat grooms itself about 3 and a half hours a day. Basicly after all the major actions during the day. When your cat is overgrooming it will not stop it, no matter what you do. No food, no toy is more interesting but more importantly, it will hurt the cat. There would be parts with hair loss or other significant signs.

You can tell if a cat is over grooming because they lick their hair off. Look for patches of thin fur.
@DetlefBrunhilde

Of the hair loss I know of. That is a pretty obvious indicator. But I am more talking about for example when he said to look for them suddenly stopping what they're doing just to groom themselves. Because I always thought that is normal cat behaviour. I want to be able to detect the lesser obvious signs of overgrooming.

@@DetlefBrunhilde I understand. As he and you said it is a normal behavior. Knowing your cat, you will be able to see what's normal and what's getting weird. When overgrooming the cat seems to be obsessed with it suddenly. I'm afraid there is no other indication

Thank you for yet another amazing video Jackson. We've had to invest in Feliway for our 9 yo Bella. We've had her for 8 years, our neighbour bought her from the RSPCA as a play friend for their dog (🤯 go figure) but they didn't want her anymore so gave her to my daughter as a birthday present. According to the vet she suffers anxiety (we only keep her indoors as she hates outside) and has little knee pads, elbow pads, even a back leg that now looks like a patchy chicken drumstick. Bless her. She is praised, loved, cuddled and is alot better but still gets stuck on 'repeat' when grooming one spot. I've received discovered CatTV on youtube which I put on the tv for her. It's calming music to birds, squirrels,etc and she sits right in front and watches for ages. She's fascinated by the squirrels (we don't have them over here). She's certainly a unique personality, quite bipolar at times as she can sit purring on your lap after she's wanted quality time with you, then you can see the transition of mood on her face and then she's annoyed and jumps off. Once she's calmed herself she's back 10 mins later wanting to get back on your lap. She's our special little girl though 🐱🐈🥰😻

Dear jackson, I watch your TV show every time it's on; please keep up the great work. Absolutely love the show. My question is, about 3 months ago I adopted from a local shelter to domestic shorthair fur babies. They are both around 5 years old, sleek, and the shiniest deep black cats that I have ever seen. I have taught them several tricks which they absolutely love doing with me, I have to admit I love it too, they are so easy to train. They are both female siblings, and from time to time I don't know why, the smaller one will just jump on the bigger one and even though it looks like they're fighting they're really only playing. It's almost like a fighting match, all I have to do is say that's enough and they will turn their heads and look at me as to say are you kidding we're having so much fun and you're breaking us up!! It is so adorable and the important thing is that they are having a ton of fun. After I tell them to stop, they will go to neutral corners of the room lie down and go to sleep. My biggest problem though is that they have severe digestion problems. They have both been to the vet for a general checkup and the vet told me to put them on a special diet for Digestive problems. Oh, it is so gross to look at and to smell, however, they eat it so they must like it but mom does not like it!! The only thing that they will eat is the chicken formula in the Pate form. Is it all right that for every meal they're eating exactly the same thing? I have tried fish, meaning salmon, whitefish, tuna and have even tried getting slightly different consistencies and then putting it in my blender to make it into a pate form. If it is not totally smooth and clump free they will not eat it they just sniff it and walk away. They just look at me as to say, you're kidding you don't seriously want us to eat this s*** do you? I have had cats my whole life and all of my other cats always bit into their food, chew it, and then swallow it, is it normal that these two cats are just licking up the food and swallowing it? I've never seen this? They also shed quite a bit even though I brush them twice a day, what else can I do?

Hey Jackson, just want to say thank you for all your videos! Before we moved into our house, our two cats (Daisy and Charlie, a mom cat and her now-adult son) were super snuggly with each other, never saw cats outside through the windows because we always lived in apartments where there weren’t any neighborhood cats. Soon after buying our house, they started seeing cats outside and Daisy would redirect her frustration and aggression at Charlie, attacking him and hissing/growling anytime he was nearby. It was very sad because they were no longer acting anywhere near like the mommy/baby they are. Well, I took the advice that you’re always giving about not free-feeding by taking away their big feeder and started giving them portions, and almost overnight Daisy’s aggression towards Charlie pretty much disappeared. Yes she still gets annoyed with him when he’s way too clingy for her liking, but she was like that before anyway. But they no longer get in possessive tiffs over their food bowls like they did before, and they’ve gone back to grooming each other and snuggling during their naps. It’s amazing how that one simple switch changed everything. They still see cats outside, but she doesn’t show signs of aggression about it. Now, if only we could afford to replace the chain link fence around our yard with a tall vinyl one that they can’t see through and neighbor cats can’t jump over, we’d be in even better business. That’s still a few years out from now, but until then, I’m content with their behavior now. So, thanks again!! 😸

My parents are so dense when it comes to taking care of our cats. Our oldest one clearly has an overgrooming problem, because her belly is completely hairless, but my parents try to say that she doesn't actually overgroom, and her belly is only bald because her fur never grew back when she was spayed like 12 years ago. That's completely absurd.

@@qwertykotchka394 I feel for you! I was there too. There were times I was afraid I wasn't doing the right thing for him. But after about a month or so (and a lot of lost sleep from his pitiful cries), he started settling in. (Results may vary. He had only been an outdoor cat before he came to live here, and then transitioned to full time indoor) The first few days was difficult getting him used to using the litter box. I had to put it by the door, and then put him in it when it seemed like that was why he was insistent to go outside. Then he settled in a bit. But then about a week or two in, he started wanting out more again. But settled back down. It's been 15 months now, and he still continues to warm up (considering we had just met the day I brought him home, and he had never been indoors with someone before, I feel like he took longer to feel as comfortable). For the last couple months, I have taken him out to the patio (in an escape proof harness and leash) most evenings when I go out to water plants. The harness took a lot of getting used to, but once it clicked in his brain that harness = outside, he loves it. He is still scared of strangers, so it is usually about sunset, or after dark, so it's nice and quiet. But he can smell and see all the sights. He likes nibbling on grass (I need to get a good indoor grass setup for him made, big enough he can lay in it, and munch on it, without destroying it in 2 days) Ok, I may have gotten a little off there... But hang in there. It will get better. Play is great! If you can think of what else she may be missing from outside. If you have windows she can sit in and look out and smell outside, that may help.

Such a great informative educational video that every single cat owner, in my opinion, needs to watch more than once in order to understand some of the real intricacies that is ultimately what being a responsible cat owner entails. So many of these details are missed in cat owners and it really is such a shame because these precious little creatures can’t communicate with us in the way that would just make things clear to us. What they need,what they’re missing, their fears and anxieties and pains. It’s up to us as the owners to equip yourselves with this sort of information and really use it in order to care for our cats in the best way possible. They rely on us to,and it’s the responsibility we sign up for when we decide to take on the care of a pet- no matter what animal. You know what I would like to see? Some sort of exam where potential owners are given the materials needed to improve their knowledge of what it means to own and take care of their pet of choice before they have the right to adopt that animal. Like a licence or certificate or something to say yes this person knows what the daily needs of owning this animal entails. It’s a privilege to own a pet and I don’t think it should just be something “anyone” should be able to do without so much as a cash exchange or agreement. If for whatever reason down the track that owner has been found to be not following through on the basic needs of that animal- the animal can be removed from that person along with their license to own. Not adhering to an agreement to care for that animal as signed for in a contract maybe upon adopting- could mean facing criminal charges. I’m serious. I see fit to often animals suffering because their owner isn’t educated on their pets needs and how to maintain their wellbeing. This video is just such a great start to providing that much needed information I’m just so thankful. I’m sure it has enhanced the lives of many cats. This needs to be all over the internet. All those places where people upload what they think are funny cat videos- not to be a wet blanket but there are few that i find funny when the reactions these cats are giving are a result of something that has scared, startled, traumatised or stressed them. God I jut shake my head sometimes out of pure disbelief at some people’s inability to see the real situation as it is. It’s not funny to force a cat to have a bath when it’s not dirty and has no medical conditions that mean it’s necessary to do that! The poor cat is obviously at the peak of its stress levels and you as a so called loving cat owner, are the one inflicting this on the poor defenceless being for no good reason whatsoever? Wtf. I could go on all day. Let’s all share this great video and strive to be the best pet owners we can be. Not because of how they enrich our lives. But because of how we enrich theirs. It’s us who should be thankful for all they teach us while part of our lives. The least they deserve is to be well cared for by educated and knowledgeable owners. They can’t speak English. If they could I’m sure they would. We must learn their form of communication. It exists. It’s right there. Just take the time to learn it and observe it and to know when they need help. And it’s not funny bathing your poor cat. Should smack u upside the head hard for that.

Gosh, our 5 indoor/outdoor ranch kitties were so good during fire evacuation to a different house in the city. So, so good. I happy to know that we have very well adjusted cats that trust us very much because we are consistently kind to them.
