So cool seeing this moving from the original wood versions into improvement after improvement. Printing it and ordering the parts. I am looking into an alternative for the festool boxes as the cheapest i can find is around 200EUR for the 3 bins. Ill let you know if i find a nice enough solution. I am also wondering what you use as 'stofzuiger' 🙂, looking into a proper sized impeller and some filters DIY solution. Could you share what you use? Thx Piet

Rather than the festool bins, you should look into large polycarbonate food prep containers as an affordable alternative.

I would recommend a small ledge under the bins, so that if you are not holding them securely after unlocking, you don’t spill the content everywhere. Most of the time it is not required, but when it happens, best to have a safeguard in my opinion. Thank you for the series, looking forward to your next video.

For future revisions, consider precise drilling of clearance holes for Rampa-type threaded inserts to screw non-carriage bolts into the base plate rather than carriage bolts (at least as an option). Carriage bolts referenced to plastic are much less reliable, and if any strip problematic to service. The inserts are mildly more expensive but bolts are cheaper and they will be more secure.

Love what you've done here. One possible suggestion. Seems like when you remove the festool dust bin, that you would get a face full of dust. However the hole from the separator leading to the bin is quite small. Seems like you could have a lid on the waste bin that just has a big enough hole for dust to fall into. This would greatly reduce the dust escaping when you have to remove a bin.

I use a CamVac after the separator so my separator runs on a vacuum. I don't think dust will blown out when changing the bins in my case, even when the system is still running.

Excellent design work Ruud. I've built a few different cyclonic (and Thien baffle) systems over the years, but never one of this style. With garage ceilings being so much lower in the UK (vs the US) many of the cyclone models are too tall; so this centrifugal design is ideal.

Looking forward to seeing this progress with each new video. I'm still stuck in analysis paralysis about whether to do it with my 3hp HVLP or my 2kw camvac. I have a plan to dismantle that, make a new frame and add a third motor (they are just numatic vac motors) to make my own 3kw one. Second issue is where I put it!

I also breading on a idea to intergrade numatic vac motors into the design. Not yet figured out the details. I do not have a 3 motor CamVac, although I would like to test it to see if it will make some difference. 1 motor is definitely not enough. I tested the PCV version with very short length of flex hose between the planer, separator, and CamVac. I cut the 2 meter flex hose in two for that. So I think you need more power when you add tube length to the total system.

@CapturingDust yes, hose length will affect airflow but it is less of an issue with HPLV motors like those on a cam vac. I believe Dennis from Hooked on wood runs 3 motors and can vary between them as for example, you don't want 3 when sanding.

This looks great! Any major revisions coming to the files that we should wait on? Just an idea, you could use door “D” weatherstripping in a pocket instead of the tape. I have a feeling the tape life will not be long. Also, what about a small hole in the platform for the cleats to index into? I’ve gone this and it does a good job at making things a little more sturdy.

I think a U channel strip on top of the bin could be a option. Only I did not choose that route because I like the bin to be as standard as possible. I am planning on releasing the REV 02 files of the Y-pieces and in and outlets end of this weekend. I redesigned the Y-pieces so they don’t need any support material now to print. And I reduced some weight on the in and out let’s. I’m am focusing now on the testing setup to see how the performance is on different situations.

Can I make the acrylic tube longer? You have it at 500mm, what if I double the length to 1000mm? Will it allow the fine dust more time/distance to spiral to the outer edges? I will be hooking it up to a 3hp dust collector. 2. Can I use 1 container to collect both the coarse and fine dust? Where I am, it is expensive to get the Festool containers that you used. I am instead thinking of using a 65L Ikea Samla container that will be big enough to collect the dust from both ports. Is there a reason that 1 container is not used to collect both coarse and fines? Thanks for any advice you can give me.

The impact of making the tube longer is a difficult question. There will be a optimum depending on the blower type. But only I did not figure out the formula for that to predict its performance. That would be trail and error. 2 stages on one container will not work because the air will travel the way of less resistance. Dust will go out trough the outlet not in the bin or will circulate in the bin. Hope that answers your questions!

I have a feeling that it will be very close as two 6 inch tubes. Don’t know for sure, I really like to test that when I have more time. Harvey uses 2 tubes of 8 inch on a single inlet of 6 inches (or a Y-piece of two times 4 inch that they put in front of the inlet side as a option). I tested with a single 4 inch inlet and two tubes of 6 inches. So if you run a 4 inch inlet than I think it would be pretty close.

No I have not. The secondary bin will fill up far less quickly than the first one. And I designed the dustport so the air flow only goes down into the bin.

You will need a 100mm hose for it. Connecting a regulator shopvac is not enough. Maybe only for one tube, but I think it is still under powered than. I will make a small version specifically for a shopvac in the next month. I already ordered some parts for it 😉.

I wonder if designing an inertial seperator like those on turboprop jet engines would be of value. That way vacuuming up a big chunk from the floor wont damage the fragile 3d printed blades.

I do wonder if IKEA samla could be an option it's cheap and globally available. The different volume models also mean large and fine can have different container sizes. I will test myself this with a cyclone separator.

It occurs to me to wonder whether this would work ok with 100mm tubes. That would shorten the entire design considerably (useful in my case) though I wonder if it would perform adequately. Since a Camvac is only a 100mm inlet anyway, and in reality the motors that are used only have a 50mm hole for air to be sucked through, I feel it might be ok. The original Harvey unit uses a centrifugal fan with likely a 150mm inlet, so running dual 150mm pipes is a necessity I would have thought.

There is a patent that uses a factor 1.4-1.6 of the big tube compared to the inlet diameter: patents.google.com/patent/EP2832449A1/en Questions is what kind of dust sizes it is tested on. And how fast the air is moving through the pipes I think. I like to make a version myself for my festool extractor. That’s uses about 27/36mm I believe. And 50mm to the motor.

@@CapturingDust That is very intersting. So my camvac has a 100mm inlet, which is ~7800cm2. If we wanted dual inlets that would roughly match this, they would each be 65mm in diameter which would then give us a pair of 100mm diameter main tubes. I'm interested to see what the static pressure/airflow losses are using this type of separator.

Dat is wel de bedoeling! Ik gebruik hem wel in combinatie met mijn CamVac die heeft nog een fijnstof filter. Maar de combi heb ik alleen nog maar getest met mijn vlak- en verdikte-bank. Ik heb een fijnstof meter gekocht om in de volgende video te kunnen testen wat de resultaten zijn.

In case of a update I add REV_ number to the files. So when you pull the latest revisions you have te latest update.

I still need to test that. I ordered a oneida cycloon to compare, only it’s in backorder for 2 months now. They are hard to get here in the Netherlands. I guess the pressure loss is a bit less on the centrifugal separator because the air doesn’t need to make a u turn compared with a cyclone. Only really big difference I think will not happen when both separaters are designed accordingly for the blower and dust type. There is very little research available for the centrifugal separators. So there are no calculations for it available. It will be trail and error to find the optimal design for each type of application. I hope we together can create the necessary test information to better understand how the different design parameters can affect the performance.

How easy is it full of dust?

When I am planing big chips it will be full very quick. Only it takes me seconds to change a bin. I have three of them and the second stage bin fills up very slow. For me it was the balance between space and fast to move forward when a bin is fully filled. It took me mostly 15 min to fill up the CamVac and 15 minutes to clean that bag and filters. Not tested it hanging on the wall with dust in it while changing the bins. I think it is not a issue while the bin is still hanging in the bracket at the back. When you pull the bin to the front it will drop down. You have plenty of time to support the bin with the hand that you use unlocking the T-loc. I will find it out in the next weeks.

I use the dual motor Record Power CamVac CGV286-4, 36L 2000 Watt for my planer. And for testing I use the Record Power CamVac CGV386-6, 90L 3000 Watt. Only I am working on a own DIY dual motor vacuum built specifically made for the separator. It is planned to be ready in January and progress can be followed up on my Patreon.

Engineer from Koenigsegg might think of this as DYI on a budget. Will be interesting to see the results compared to 2022+ hybrid cyclone + baffle systems or simple cyclones with neutral vane. I would like to make a small single jet for 38/32 tubes for my desktop CNC at some point. But I will start with a copy of Oneida Dust Deputy Low Pro scaled to fit on big pickle jar or small bin. Two technical points It is better to cut the sealing tape diagonally to avoid straight gaps and overlaps. Include earthing point for the whole system including buckets will keep the walls cleaner and buckets won't zap you.
