I added dust collection to my shop several years ago. Since then, I have made several different videos about dust collection. I found that almost all of the two horsepower dust collectors were based on the same design. When I seen that Harbor Freight came out with a new Bauer dust collector it intrigued me. Then when I looked closer, I noticed that the impeller housing had all been completely redesigned. I finally was able to get me one in the shop. I've spent a couple of days testing it out and I have found numerous improvements that they have done to this machine. One of the only things that I notice that hasn't really changed is the price. Once you factor in the cost of the filter, this thing is as cheap, if not cheaper than the old Chicago Electric. Is going to completely change the dust collector market as all these other companies that are charging twice as much for a less efficient product are going to have to reconsider their prices.
Amazon shows this as a frequently returned item. It was a little tricky getting setup but is the best one I have found. I have bought several different air monitors.

Someone pointed out in the comments that this would be a great option to add on and I agree. This is a remote to turn the system on and off.

Thank you for providing this. I was a bit disappointed that the provided assembly instructions said nothing about installing the paddles and handle onto the filter. When I called Harbor Freight’s 888 number, they emailed a blowup pic which helped. More importantly, they directed me to your video as the best place to get answers and that worked. Again, thanks much.

I may not be the best at it, and I certainly do not do it as much as I should. For decades, I never used any type of dust collection and never thought twice about it. Now I am really trying to use dust collection as much as possible. Something is better than nothing and you have to start from some where. For a person just starting out and does not know if they are going to enjoy the hobby or do this much, it can be very daunting to tell them they have to spend more for dust collection than what they were planning on spending on their beginner set of tools. You can see some of my older videos where I just used a $15 box fan and a $5 filter, which greatly improved the air quality in my shop. It seems like once you ever start dust collection and you see how much better it is with it, you will continue to increase it increase it until your add a desirable level. My main job is working in an emergency room. I see a lot of older people coming in with a lot of lung issues. I know people told me when I was younger, I regret it when I was older and didn't listen. It does seem like the younger generation is listening and that is going to be a great thing whenever they reach our age.

2-micron probably isn't good enough. This is about the worst size dust particles for the lungs. Less than 1-micron, the body can clear the particles. Larger than 5-10microns, the particles won't make it to the lungs alveoli (the air sacks that transfer oxygen to the blood). The idea of HEPA filters is that the remaining dust isn't much danger. I don't think it would have cost a lot to put a 1-micron filter on it.

I bought this model a few days ago, with the 15% off coupon, plus an additional 10% off for getting the HF credit card. Good deal! I am in the process of adding a super dust deputy cyclone in-line ahead of the motor unit, and replacing the collection bag with a gamma lid and screw-off 5 gallon bucket. My unit came with the filter cleaning paddles already installed inside the filter! Great idea to have a particulate monitor for air quality -- I will have to get one of those! Thanks for your good review and demonstration of assembly.

Great video, Thanks. I also just picked one up with the 15% off coupon. As mentioned in another post, the HF Bauer unit is virtually identical to the JET DC-1100VX-CK model, but at half the price. My guess is both units come out of the same factory. I had the same issue with having to assemble the canister pad assembly, which the HF instructions did not cover at all. Fortunately, the JET instructions cover this assembly process very well. The fit and finish of this HF Bauer unit is top notch, can't wait to put it to work.

Did you by chance do any direct comparisons on CFM performance between the Central and Bauer? Seems like you’re potentially losing a fair amount of power. I’d be interested to see a “real use” comparison between the two. I would assume airflow is easier with a canister filter rather than the old bag style. I’m debating between trying one of these or upgrading my older harbor freight unit with a canister filter.

My older system has ben modified, so I can't do a comparison. The Cental Machinery one claims 1550 cfm. The Bauer claims1200 cfm. Just using both, I could not tell a difference. I think either way you go you will get similar results.

Hey - thanks for the great video! Loved that you pointed out some of the things you liked and things you weren’t so sure about. Up to now, I’ve been a shop vac/HD dust stopper guy. I’ve thought about buying the old Central Machinery DC, but once you do the upgrades on it, may as well have bought a Jet or similar. I like that this machine does a fair amount of those upgrades. Do you know if the impeller is plastic or metal? I haven’t watched you other videos yet, but do you typically upgrade the impeller?
@ShopRamblings
@ShopRamblings 23 күн бұрын
It is metal. How many cfm are you needing. I think most people who upgrade the impeller didn't need to. This is going to be 10x the cfm you have. Rather than changing the impeller, if you spent that effort on duct work, you will probably get more return on investment. I have found out this is the Rikon Model 60-151C: 1.5 HP Dust Collector, just rebranded at half the cost. If you have any questions such as converting it to 220v or assembling the filter beater, download the Rikon manual.

I have the Jet DC1200, and also picked up this unit as a secondary system to save a few bucks. Although the Jet design has not changed in years, it’s still outperforms this updated Bauer dust extractor. Due to this it might be worth spending the extra $300 or so for Jet.
@ShopRamblings
@ShopRamblings 13 күн бұрын
I haven't tested the Jet DC1200VXCK. I am sure you are right. They both say 1200cfm. The difference is the Jet says 1200cfm @4". The Bauer tested 1200cfm @6". It was less @4". That is probably due to the 2hp motor on the Jet compared to the 1.5hp on the Bauer. The Bauer is the same as the Rikon 60-151C. Currently, the Bauer is $399. The Jet is $849. For my needs and budget, the Bauer will.

@@ShopRamblings The biggest performance killer I found is the stand itself. I have mine mounted to the wall. I have the central section inline with the motor housing. I also tossed the bag, and added an Oneida Super Dust Deputy cyclone separator. I don’t have tool to tell CFM, but my pull is around 35mph at the end of a 20ft 4” hose. I will be doing the same with the Bauer this Spring. If I don’t forget, I’ll come back here and let you know the pull I end up getting. You also seem spot on. 1.5HP vs 2HP, and 6” vs 4” is the slight difference here. Outside of that the builds are completely identical.

Nice review. Basically this is $150 more than the old one, which is 50% more ,but you're getting a lot for that. For starters, that's half the price Rockler charges for their similar paddle filter, though theirs claims a small micron filer. But that alone makes it worth it. But throwing in the better separation, bigger impeller, easier bag change, etc makes this really a no-brainer. The folks at Wynn filters are going to be really annoyed by this since I bet they made a lot of money from people upgrading their HF DCs with their filters.

@derekcohen1000
@derekcohen1000 28 күн бұрын
@@ShopRamblings 0.5 micron would be HEPA rating, which is what one gets with collectors from Festool and others. It is offered as a target. Most decent, low priced pleated filters come in at 1 micron. But a 1 1/2 hp motor with a 12" impeller is poor! The impeller has not increased in size (the base models from most manufacturers are all 12"). A minimum size using a 6" hose for improvement is 14". Preferably 15". This will require more power for suction, and you may get away with 2 hp for short lengths, but 3 hp is where a significant difference will be found. As it stands, the construction of the Bauer is improved, but the performance is highly unlikely to be a significant change.

@derekcohen1000 is that something from overseas? FestoolUSA doesn't sell a dust collector. They sell a dust extractor, but so does Harbor Freight. @@ShopRamblings Two companies which come to mind are Oneida and Harvey. Both sell Hepa-level dust collectors. Oneida sell a pleated filter which removes 0.3microns. @@derekcohen1000 You may want to do a little research on that statement, 40 microns is the smallest particulate considered visible to the human eye. 2 micron particulate is certainly not equivalent to floor sweepings. Even HEPA systems do not remove all particulate below 0.2 micron unless you're assuming every particulate generated in your shop is captured by your system. These are for wood working shops, not surgical suites.

The best, cheapest, safest, and most effective way to run a dust collector is outside of your shop into a container outside. It will be stronger and less restricted, and the particles will be far from your lungs.

I agree. That Is how my system is setup. Some people are not able to do that. When I started dust collection in my shop there was not an affordable option this good. I wanted to check it out and see if it was any good. If this would had been available back then it would have saved me a lot of time and money.

I have the old Central Machinery version from Harbor Freight...the worst part for sure is that stupid bag, well both actually, mine has upper and lower cloth bags. Trying to get that bag back on is just about a 2 person job, someone to hold it in place while you get the clamp back on. It works great, but the bags are a huge pain. Wish they'd design one with a drum that's on wheels that you can simply roll out and dump, those bags get heavy, a drum would be much better.

I have that same one. I have mine modified to take a 55 gallon barrel. This filter is much more efficient than the top bag. I haven't decided yet if I am going to modify this one.

If you have had your collector with the top bag operating for more than 2 weeks, you need to take it off and throw it away. It isn’t “filtering” anything at all. Spend the money and get either a Wynn filter or one of the less expensive alternatives and add a cyclone separator. You will not be disappointed. I have the old HF collector setup as described AND an expensive 2HP Jet collector with cyclone and better filter built in. The old HF is absolutely competitive with the Jet once it’s been upgraded. Spoiler alert: what will likely eventually happen is that filer bag will become so clogged that it completely impedes the exhaust air flow and it will be forced off of the machine in a way that is best described as “exploding”. Your shop will be CAKED in dust. It’s a nightmare. Ask me why I went out and bought an expensive Jet collector…….. Also, ignore that beater crank. Use compressed air to knock the loose stuff from the pleats from the outside in.

Thanks I was wondering about this, HF is really steeping up there game. Please suggestions for modifications for adding a barrel for the dust. If you inclose the base of the table saw using it as an initial drop for the sawdust, this greatly improves the efficiency of your dust collection, although making 2 places to empty dust from. This has definitely made the list of things for my shop when the addition is done, currently cannot move in it, to many things need space for a large lumber haul.

For anybody out there with the desk collector, if you were hitting the on and off button, I truly feel bad for you. Pick up the key fob controlled on and off switch it. It will make your life way easier. I keep it clipped on my Apron and withwith the push of a button, I can turn it on and off
@ShopRamblings
@ShopRamblings 27 күн бұрын
I agree 100% with you. If you have to go over and turn it on and off every time you're not going to do it. If you want something to be used for safety, you have to make it easy. You can see I have a lot of videos showing where I automated my system by putting micro switches on my blast gates. Even with just having to reach up on my Miter saw less than a foot away from where the handle is and sliding the blast gate open to turn on my system. I catch myself sometimes not doing it. If I had to walk over and hit the on button that would happen a lot more often. Thank you for pointing this out and as soon as I finish with this comment I am going to go find one of those key fob switches on Amazon and put a link in the description. If you know of a good one please let me know as I don't use that system but it is a simple and easy to add.

@ the one I have is made by O’skool however it’s like $60 and it is designed for dust collectors however Amazon has 15 amp remote switches that are intended for anything 15 amp and they’re about $15. I’ve always wondered if they would work with a dust collector. I did buy one of the cheaper options and I have my shop lights on it. Because I do film in the shop and it makes it easy to turn the shop lights on and off with a key fob because when I film, I use cinematic lighting.

FYI - $50 off this month for Inside Track members making the cost $399. The bag connection looks like an improvement over the steel band clamp affair but still looks to be a pain. A two stage cyclone with a drum is still the way to go. I added the Oneida Super Dust Deputy to my old HF unit a couple years ago and haven't had to empty the bag since (and prob never will). The metal trash can is SO much easier to empty! Also added a pleated filter to replace that worthless bag filter. (It's more of a dust distributor. lol) The Bauer unit is still a huge leap forward from the old one though ... I may pick one up but will wait for a bigger/better coupon.

Have you ever used the bag? I think that is why you see so many people selling almost new dust collector on Facebook Market Place. It may say 1 micron. You must not watch my channel much. The videos shot at my Dad's shop. Those bands saws are from Harbor Freight. We bought them in the early 1990's. My oldest tool review that I did 6 years ago is on the Banks Brad Nailer from Harbor Freight. So when you say "not too long ago " how many decades are you referring to? I don't remember saying Harbor Freight made cheap tools in the 80's but it is possible. If I did I was referring to low price, not low quality. But it's cool that you think I am Trendy.

@ShopRamblings I think a lot people had bad experiences with them. They do have some cheaply made tools and I bet that's what they have used. I use a Hercules compound sliding miter saw from them and it is the best saw i have ever used. I have 2 dewalt non sliding saws and they have lasted over 20 years. Brushes and switches are all I ever replaced on them. I just didn't see spending nearly 700 dollars on a saw. My cousin has the dewalt version and even he is quite impressed with my Hercules. I also have a drill press from them I bought in the early 2000s. Only belts have been replaced. Also a number of mechanics tools, paint sprayers, nail guns and even their nails. I personally don't buy their cheaper line because I use my tools a lot.

@bjenkins803 HF business model has always been good, better, best. A good example is angle grinders. They have them from $12 to $129. The $12 one is great for someone who is only going to use it for light duty or occasional use. The problem is idiots will buy the $12 grinder and get mad it doesn't last as long under heavy use as a $150 name brand grinder. Some tools are not made to last forever, but for the price, they have the best value in tools.
