It's good to see some photographers on a budget mate, as much as I love - Let's just leave them nameless superstars - Stoat up to an area in a flash van all kitted out with everything from a house and beyond, it's good to see yourself and others struggling for the art. Especially love the Hoops on the rear view mirror too!

Hi ! With all the soiling & pollution problems caused by a 'significant' number of VW & smaller campervans - that don't carry toilet facilities. How do you manage urine & / or faeces ? There is a huge problem with people urinating / defecating / leaving soil bags around - how do you avoid becoming one of them ? Taking Waternish in Skye - for example - there is a huge problem around the ancient church & old buildings & the locals have to deal with unpalatable amounts of human excrement. We spoke to local people who are dismayed by the situation.

Very minimalist Henry. You could do with a power bank for your fridge & charging your gear etc.

I am so glad you actually did this. I was thinking about going 'wild' camping at some-point for the first time. But my wife was not keen on me doing that and in the UK there has been a massive clamp-down by National Park authorities and police to stop people from camping. Car-camping does appeal to me. I think my Ford B-max may allow for this. So this gives me 'food for thought' ....even my wife turned round whilst watching this video and said that it was a better idea than any solo 'wild' camping notions I had.

When space is a premium, items which are multi functional work best. You could make a table from the box used for storing food. Rig up a small tarp or poncho attached to the tailgate for a more sheltered cooking area. Keep the poncho in your car because if you forget your coat then you have an emergency rain cover. Carry plenty of cordage and a roll of duct tape, it has thousands of uses.

I bought a VW T6 3 years ago with this in mind. 2 years ago we did a tour of Scotland in a hired motor home, that was superb. This summer we hired the same again to tour England, but this time we noticed a huge difference in where we could just pull over and stop, many many more restriction with reviews saying people were getting knocks on the windows from police telling them to move on. If you can do it, it’s superb to drive somewhere the previous evening then wake up on site for an early start. I have those two same books on Scotland too................................ 😁

Nice little set up for you Henry, looks like you have got it how you need it. One tiny bit of advice and that is run you Air Con constantly whether it be Summer or Winter, sleeping in you car and getting in and out when damp creates a lot of moisture, your air con will get rid of it. It might hit your fuel consumption slightly but will pay off big time in the long run and stop the car misting up all the time 😉 A decent camper is more like £30k

Love watching your videos Henry, this struck a chord as I also “car camp” (mostly in southern England). My biggest issue is staying warm in a metal box when the engine isn’t running & I usually sleep on an air bed that’s sandwiched between them silver survival blankets to try & reflect my body temp back towards me which really helps. However, I’m going to try & build a small deck to raise me up off the metal base which in turn should create storage space underneath with some slide out shallow crates. Enjoy Scotland, keep an eye out for the aurora at night or leaving your camera running continual shoot overnight & see if you’ve missed anything when you wake up in the morning.

Hi Henry, finally a full length feature on the silver steed - as you say its like a camper van just without the creature comforts, but that said, tens of thousands cheaper. So fair play to you, go for it - these days for me I'd need the fire brigade and a genie lift to get me upright after a night in the car. I once had to sleep in the car on the M62 when it was shut overnight in January 95, in the snow naturally ( actually -10 and 2.5 foot of snow on the roads as the ploughs gave up, so you kinda remember ) , I was headed back to God's own county after work when I was just a wee bit older than you. So anyone who sleeps in their car has my respect, particularly if you're up in Scotland where you can get all 4 seasons in the one day, and half bitten to death as a bonus. As ever great scenery and always interesting to get your thoughts. Yet another of your grand days out. Thanks so much for sharing.

I was really interested in the rundown because I am thinking about doing something similar at some point. I wondered if you covered the windows; now I know. One thing I would mention is that there are tent like attachments for hatchback type vehicles which nicely expand your space and offer protection from the elements. I have not looked for any reviews yet but it may be an option of interest to you. I enjoy learning about how people make it happen; accomplish the goal...behind the scenes so to speak. Thanks Henry.

This was a really interesting and helpful video Henry. Living in Mid Wales its crossed my mind having a sleep over in the car just to get out for the same reason as you do. The light! Ive not slept in my car yet but seeing some of the ideas you've come up with makes it a little easier to think about. Ive got a Grandland X so it should have enough room but then again I am 5ft 10 so might have to do a test outside the house to see how roomy it is first. Great little video. Look forward to watching the next. Keep up the great work!

I've enjoyed watching your videos, there's always a story before the actual shooting. Love what you did with some good ideas and some car space but always keep in mind that sleeping in a "metal box", as you call it, tends to give condensation on the inside due to lack of thermal isolation!!!! I would advise to get some car condensation absorber, and use it as often as you can to remove moist and condensation from the inside of your car. Best regards from Romania!!! ;)

Not tried car camping, yet, but I did cut out some polystyrene mount board. I use it on sunny days to keep my car cool. For camping, I do wonder if window wind deflectors might be a good idea - so that you can keep the windows cracked open just a fraction.

I have followed your channel for a long time, I have loved your enthusiasm and approach to photography, as a Duke of Edinburgh Expedition Assessor, I am, however disappointed that you are encouraging irresponsible ‘car camping’ I live in the far north of Scotland, we have been plagued by ‘dirty campers’ over the past couple of years including through lockdown, from ‘camping’ overnight in cemetery car parks, passing places on narrow roads and defecating in historical moments, roadside, beaches etc….. I don’t need to go on. Please make sure that you are being responsible and that your followers are being responsible and considerate too. People come here for the stunning country and wilderness, please leave no trace, use a campsite, support the locals we have had a tough couple of years too!

Very enjoyable video, Henry. Wondering - how tall are you? I'm 187cm. I scoped out the idea of sleeping in the back of our RAV4. I'd have to sleep diagonally though. Another 5cm would be handy. My wife could just sleep sitting up in one of the front seats. Problem solved. None of my business, but I'm guessing you're a single bloke? My wife isn't keen on me venturing into Australia's wilds any time soon. Your video - none of the cars/trucks passing by recognised you. They're not watching the good vidz on KZbin, that's for sure.
