Definitely something a little off. My SRT '05 Quad averages 11.5-12 mpg and I don't drive it easy. When I bought the truck a few years ago, I changed all the plugs, put a K&N filter in the stock airbox, dumped a couple of bottles of fuel injector cleaner in the tank and bumped the timing a couple of degrees. All together it made a noticeable improvement in how the truck ran & drove.

Sounds like a candidate to show everyone how basic maintenance and troubleshooting an older vehicle will recover it’s lost horsepower. Plugs, coils, intake & throttle body cleaning, O2 sensors, new cats and mufflers, oil change, transmission flush, differential service, coolant flush with a step cooler thermostat - “The Works” package. And if some headers, “high flow” cats, and freer flowing mufflers, and a performance transmission kit all make it into the mix, no one’s going to complain...

Well I would say change the plugs, and change the oil and the air filters, and maybe even the fuel filters and run it again, and she'll probably do about 350 to 370 horsepower without changing the rev limiter or the gears, which for a motor that was rated at about 400 to 450 when it came out that isnt bad, and hell who knows, maybe its running rich, or one of those filters hasnt been changed it a good amount of time, it would explain the fuel mileage and why it feels slow, like if its not burning well and down on power, that does effect the fuel mileage in a negative way as its not burning it as cleanly as it should also auto transmissions I think even have their own oil filters and oil need to be changed as well, which might have been deffered, like just go through everything, and do a second run, could be fun to see how much comes back purely on doing the regular maintenance like that wont be cheap, but keep in mind what its doing like it is, like what can this thing do with all that changed and a new exhaust? and man I hope this CCP pandemic crap calms down soon, as this would be awesome to see on the burnout pad at the freedom factory along with the rolls

The 6 speed viper truck suffers in the 0-60 as it loses traction because the power is immediate and thus overloads the tires. The automatic viper truck suffers similar outcome but for different reasons. You mentioned the truck doesn't spin its tires on initial launch...well that's probably because your 4 speed automatic transmission is due for maintenance. It's wet clutches are likely slipping.

Did I hear “ shifted” during the run? If so, those numbers are all wrong. Needs to stay in a 1 to 1 ratio or whatever gear is close to that. There’s away you build it up so it shifts into 3rd and then floor it and then hit the button to log the dyno. If it hits the OD, hit the dyno remote button asap. Cool run though.

try running a bit of injector cleaner through a tank of fuel. a dirty injector can greatly affect horsepower even if it seems like the truck is running perfectly fine. My suggestion would be to start with the cheap and simple stuff, and if that doesn't help, then you can try more advanced things like a tune to REALLY wake that old gal up.

the 48RE basically is a 727 with an overdrive 4th gear. a reprograming for the Viper engine power curve would help. the Viper engine has more potential in it. I think somewhere between 2005, and 2006 they produce 525 hp, and some were around 540 lb/ft of torque. redline and fuel shutoff was at 6200rpm. reprograming the engine's electronics for a different ignition/fuel curve and raise the redline/fuel shutoff to around 6400 to 6800rpm would help.

If you have the factory transmission, you need a new one. The stock transmission is the transmission for a diesel truck, it cannot take the fast revs and breaks down quickly. Then again my Humvee wasn't getting any better really until I swapped the 3 speed for a 6 speed Allison and did a bit of work on the Turbo 6.5 that was in it. That truck is kind of like a boat, a money pit that gives a lot of smiles. I suspect this SRT10 is the same kind of thing just a hell of a lot more comfortable...and usable in general xD. You need to learn how to dyno an automatic. You can't let it downshift and you can turn off the OD by pushing the tow/haul button on the end of the shifter. The runs were inconsistent because the driver wasn't pushing the throttle at the same time or the same way. That truck with the auto has a hefty drive train loss but they still put 440 to the wheels. With some bolt ons, head porting and a cam they make mid 500's to the wheels all day long. I've had a dynojet in my shop since 1997. I would be embarrassed if this was my shop.

I'm betting that both numbers are real, and the truck has an issue that is causing something like it pulling a lot of timing, the cats rattling into a position that they're a big restriction, slipping transmission... something that intermittently soaks up a ton of power. I have a 2004 Cummin's ram that has dyno numbers that say it should be fast (hp in the high 400's, mid 900's torque), but at the dragstrip, it's run one high 13-second pass and a bunch of 15's. At the dragstrip about half the time, it's spinning the tires and I'm going through the 60' lights sideways, and the rest of the time the trans is slipping badly. On the street, you don't feel the trans slipping at all. Big, HEAVY bricks are hard to run consistently fast.

There is no way to lose 100 hp in the driveline. Drive line loss is kinetic energy being converted to thermal energy via friction or slipping friction material in the trans. One hp is 748 watts. A typical toaster is 750 watts. You would literally be generating the equivalent of 100 toasters worth of heat in that drive line. Your rear end or trans would be glowing. If you're missing 100 hp it's because of ring or valve seal, restricted breathing, misfire or improper fuel delivery. FYI, a lot of scan tools allow you to force the trans into a specific gear, my snap on does anyways.

On the transmission when ya shift from 2 to D as soon as it goes in 3rd shift back to 2nd to hold 3rd gear. This is something similar what you do on the 1980’s Ford AOD. To see if this works for you. You may have to reprogram the shift points in your transmission.

Here's a good way to tell if it's lost it venom. I had an 05 Ram SRT-10 Quad Cab. Bought it in 2006 with 8k miles. Owned it for 4 years. Stock Pirelli's and later Goodyear Fortera SL (directionals) both would bark the tires for a second when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear under full throttle. I'd stomp on it after getting to about 20mph so I didn't spin off the line. If you can get that automatic to do that, I'd say it's near factory performance.

The truck sounds like it has a sporadic misfire just off idle and under light load. I would look at the plugs (and fuel trim) to verify. If that is the case (I've been wrong before)it's most likley a fuel delivery problem. I would have the injectors cleaned (or at least run some seafoam in the tank) as well as the filter assembly in the tank-nobody checks them, and they're always filthy.

I have a 06 and its runs great after I fixed everything, the transmission on The Crew cabs is junk. If you actually have a viper engine that puts out horsepower or more that stock the trans can't handle it for very long.

Reduce the weight and it will be faster. Carbon fiber hood, get rid of the cap. And get a tuning chip and have it programmed, put a turbo stage 2 or 3.

I remember when the V-10 came out all you had to swap the cams to make 710 hp+ yeah! Plus, change the crappy trans for somethin' that cam handle the torque. that was one of the reasons that engine and trans was De-tuned. the frame couldn't handle the torque!

Great vid. will be interesting to see what it ends up doing. This past January, my 06 QC made 435 hp (max) and 496 tq (max) on a Mustang dyno, with 93 octane, tune and bolt on's only.

This numbers would make you think you have a faulty coil or a dead cylinder. But you'd feel that.

3:25 I strongly disagree on the RC manual trucks having "bad traction". Even with 11 year old Dunlops (on it when i got it with 19k mls) my 05 RC rarely spun the tires on dry roads. Wet was a totaly different story with these old Dunlops but with a set of new Contis (not the best choice given the vehicle weight) i can mash it no problem, even on wet roads. And yes, at 30k mls now the engine still has all its power. For what they are - 15 year old leaf sprung trucks - they are really good and quick, almost "fast".

You do know that a major cause of gas pump fires is people getting back into their cars after leaving the pump running, dont you? Getting back into a standing car re-charges your body with static electricity, which then discharges (creates a spark) at the fill point when you touch, and ground out the filler nozzle, thereby igniting the fumes and gas. Once you start filling the car you should NEVER re-enter the car! Its pretty much common knowledge around here..

Those 0-60 and 1/4 mile numbers are slower than a stock 5.7L Tundra. That's just sad.

It sucks that only the single cab Srt 10 came manual. Would be nice to have a 4 door manual truck

Pisses me off to no end that there isn't anything like this truck on the market today. People are paying stupid $$$$ for pickup trucks, and Ford is the only one to offer something actually unique on their top of the line half ton(Raptor). Everybody else, the Sierra Denali, Dodge Larimie Longhorn, Tundra TRD PRO, its the same damn truck as the $35,000 base trim crew cab, you're paying a $20,000 markup for electronic gee-gaws and nicer leather, maybe a bigger engine with the GMC(it still isn't as wild as that Viper V10) Where is our Z06 Corvette truck Chevy???? I want a 600hp supercharged monster with massive brakes(big brakes are great for towing too)

There's no doubt the catalytic converter is blocked with the rattle. Those pulls don't sound like the exhaust is freely flowing. Take those off and I bet you're at 80+% of the original hp/torque.
