Did the same thing. My setup, albeit projector based, cost me $115. I am proud of that. It fills me with pride. Props on the well made video.

You know I want to thank you for proving that you can have a good, decent home theater for little to no money if you shop around and do your homework. Also, I search up “cheap home theater” on KZbin and your video is the only one I’ve come across so far that includes all parts of a home theater system (display, receiver, speakers, physical media player/streaming device) all for a very low price. Lastly, I totally agree that because of TVs becoming very inexpensive they are being thrown out in favor of larger ones or just stored away in someone’s home not being used. This gives these used items a new life without ending up in a landfill somewhere. So thank you for pointing that out. One more thing, I notice that while other videos claim to showcase a “budget” or “cheap” home theater it’s usually still in the $1,000 plus dollar range or only a projector OR only speakers that those others discuss. You gave us a very effective and useful way to enjoy home theater while keeping money in our pockets. Btw, you mentioned the ps3 for physical and streaming needs but I found a Blu-ray player that has WiFi and popular streaming apps with original remote and it’s an LG for only $10!! On FB market. So if I had your setup I could conceivably pay $190 total. Anyhow, thanks for a great video.

Good info. Been entertaining the idea that if I ever get to live in a bigger space I'd make a sort of cozy back TV room with a fire place, similar to what my grandparents had; and this kind of setup would be perfect.

i definitely agree on the display and video components, i stopped chasing video years ago because it's an endless money pit. however, the speakers are the one thing you should not skimp on because not only do they deliver your sound but they will survive decades of audio component upgrades. you should get the best speakers you can find and afford.

I still have my vt50, love it. Plasma has such a natural, pleasing picture quality for sdr content. Wish i never sold my ps3! Ps3 and plasma was a potent combo back in the day.

70% of my home surround sound is from the used market. Friends and family that have heard it are impressed!

Until now, I didn't realized how cheap you can go if you want something that is expensive on the market. Probably, like building a powerful used thinkpad, it will be a little pricey in my country but if I have the money of my own I probably build something like this.

Frugal setup! Speakers could use an update. I'm currently building a subwoofer with a unit that has been installed in a car

That's an excellent idea. I just upgraded the speakers a few days ago to 2x Infinity SL-30's in the front and SL10's in the back. It made a night and day improvement!

But you get what you pay for. You're missing out on Dolby Atmos ceiling/height speakers. All speakers benefit from Atmos for a smoother transition from speaker to speaker as an object moves around.

Great execution and presentation of some excellent advice for those on a tight budget. I'm on board with most of your suggestions. However, I feel the benchmarks for any decent system are a good subwoofer and center channel. The center handles about 70-80% of the soundtrack, including virtually all the dialogue. I would allocate as much as my budget as I could towards that single piece. You're right about scouring your local craiglist, offerup, FB marketplace for deals. I've seen excellent, potent subwoofers go for very cheap as well. These things are also easy to scale up as you can upgrade and replace by individual speakers. Nice job!

I very much agree about the center and sub, but my focus at the time was on sourcing the core components (TV, receiver, etc.). My setup was in its infancy when this video was made. Nowadays Front L & R are a pair of Sony SS-TL5's, the surrounds are a pair of Infinity SL30's, and the center is an Infinity SL10. It's made a huge difference. Still need a decent sub though...
