Thank you so much for this video as it was a serious thought for me. Orginally from Melba, ID and our dry desert climate, I moved to a much more humid climate in Missouri. In spring and summer here the humidity is so high you can barely breathe when you walk outside! After watching your video we have decided to insultate our coop and add a little more ventilation as well as installing fans rather than AC. Again, Thank you so much for sharing your expieriences with us!

Thanks Bri for great information. I don't know why people wouldn't insulate for the cold as well as the heat. Like you said they treat the chicken as live stock they don't actually care about. Even large farming companies use fans and heating to keep the flocks alive, not that I agree or condone commercial farming practices. I read on a blog that you can place a shallow pan of water for the chicken to step into for cooling, would that be something the chicken would do?

It's always worth a try. I know some people's chickens do step in the pans, but others won't go near them. Great source of conductive cooling, though, if your chickens will comply. :)

@@thefeatherbrainI have a metal shed... Any ideas on how to insulate that when the roof is already low?

Considering we have the 3rd highest Electric power cost in the world 🌎, having a AC in my coop would be 100% unsustainable, this is why I'm going solar with the coop. My computer doesn't want to turn on again, so I have to put off my chicken coop part 2 video off until I can take my computer to the shop, ill still be shooting video of the progress, so part 2 will have more progress added to it....inside scoop...the four columns are done and the beams are done, the concrete floor that goes on top of the beams is next, from there the structure starts looking like a coop lol

Looking forward to it. My husband has no experience with concrete (he does all the hands-on stuff around here), but we are thinking we may need to do concrete walls on our next coop. We are planning on moving off grid into the mountains next year and we want to build our coop so 3 of the 4 walls are underground (like in a hillside). The very top of the coop will be above ground (with a clear roof for light) and we will have ventilation along the roof and we're planning on an underground vent as well to bring air in. The purpose for building the coop in the ground is insulation. I want my chickens comfortably cool in the summer and comfortably warm in the winter - we get about 4 feet of snow where we're gonna be building and it gets cold. We have no electricity up there, but we'll have lots of solar panels. Problem is we don't get much sun in the winter, so the heaters I use now are not an efficient option. Anyway, I'm excited to see how your concrete work turns out on your coop. You seem to really know what you're doing with that.

@@thefeatherbrain blocks here are installed different because of Hurricanes, joints are filled completely, and here as long as the wall is level we don't worry if a block is chipped at the end or is it's slightly crooked, because walls here get stucco, stucco is done smooth here giving a nice finish work to the job, I also have a stucco video.

In addition to the concern of dust and electronics making for fire risk, I would be concerned about the AC turning into an awful mold farm. This might not be an issue in all climates, but in humid ones, it definitely is. My house one became riddled with mold after I forgot to clean off the dust filter. And because of how they're usually built, they're nearly impossible to sanitize properly if they do get mold growing in them. Mold can be seriously dangerous to human health and likely even more dangerous for chickens, given the sensitive nature of their respiratory systems. In dry climates, a swamp cooler might be a more efficient option than an AC.

I run an air conditioner in conjunction with a dehumidifier in my coop. Also my AC unit has a removable filter that is cleaned regularly. There’s also a smoke detector and an exhaust fan that filters the air every ten minutes. I don’t worry about mold or dust and I know my birds are comfortable at all times. ❤
