These nipples are a terrible design. All this would be fixed so easily if it was based off a bolt and nut style instead of a screw style. Unfortunately, the only kind that is the nut and bolt style is the red water cup type and those have their own problems.

My friend, you are partially correct. In my particular use case, a bolt and nut style would be preferred. I do believe if you go deep enough into the bowels of Amazon, you may find a side mounted chicken nipple backed with a bolt. I just didn't want to wait 2 months for them to come from China. But many other people use these nipples in small PVC pipes where there is no access to the backside to insert and tighten a nut. I suspect this is the much more popular use case simply because of the scale of large poultry farms.
