Diagnosis before treatment is crucial. Listen to your child! I have 2 children with learning disabilities and ADD, and so when I started to listen to them, and we got appropriate help, school became much more doable. They weren't just being lazy, there was a real problem.

Parents, take courage even if it takes time for your kiddo to open up. My 15yo son is just now able to verbalize to me the deep reasons behind a school problem that started 6 months ago. We found some temporary workable solutions together but I’m confident this summer we will be able to more accurately address the root causes. Parenting is not for the faint of heart.

The problem with that is that eventually you will come to the point where you don't care anymore, belt or no belt. That's what happened to me, and my quitting high school was a big F-U to my honor student parents.

SUGGESTIONS FROM ANYONE NEEDED PLEASE... Thanks for the video. My child just turned 9 and often she has stayed home from school whether due to genuine symptoms... or in the end, not. However she was happily attending during her previous term. She just sadly missed her last week before the Christmas break including a couple of events which she was upset about, as this cough of hers kept returning... She seems to get cold feet though upon returning to school after holidays and due to this cough, with the winter break being longer than expected... school restarted this Tuesday and she has not been back yet... She finally admitted to us she is simply scared to go back especially after a long break. She says she likes the teachers (her favourite just returned after being absent for almost the entire autumn); no friend issues; and she generally wants to stay in the school whenever we talk about looking elsewhere... I love the passage about doing the hard things first so your life will be easier (same words from Les Brown...) and this I may try tomorrow if necessary...

Thanks for the great advice and for the considerate comments below, from which I also learned a lot! I also have a 3 year old girl, who spent the whole summer telling everyone how excited she was that she was starting kindergarten in the autumn - she wanted to play with the kids, kept asking when she was starting etc. etc. Now she has been going for a couple of weeks and says she doesn't want to and that she misses mum and dad. I know it is normal and I keep saying how well she has done at the end of every day, even told her it's OK to cry, so she now spends her whole morning crying and weeps quite a bit during the day. My questions are: (1) should I pay any attention to it (I say "OK, I see you are sad now", but feel I might be putting too much importance on the crying), or just ignore it and risk her shutting down and hiding her emotions and (2) as stupid as it might sound, can too much crying cause any long-term emotional trauma to a toddler? p.s. I might be more worked up than she is... :)

Dona Pickard, is she emotionally ready for the school? I would talk to her teachers. Perhaps it is the structure that is the problem if she was excited to go and is having trouble now. I don't think she will have long-term trauma, but if she is crying this much, how much is she getting out of school?

My 12 year old has HF ASD and is struggling with school due to extreme anxiety. I belive it's a combination of sensory overload, autistic burnout, struggling to deeply connect with his peers as he feels different to them, the whole school setting and thus his needs are not being met. School isn't really very helpful and unable to identify what the triggers are. I'm at a loss what to do. He is begging to be homeschooled.

I'm not sure what is going here with school, sounds like you need a meeting and some adjustments might need to be made if you don't want to homeschool. There are smaller class settings that might help him. See if there is a parent advocacy group in your area who can help navigate.

I'm teenager and I love to do all my creative stuff in home. Shcool will take my time on things that makes me happy. I'm introvert I hate group works, I know how much bullies can hurt you, I now will go for the second time in the 8 class, because of the deppresion and suicidal thought. If Kids and teenagers will be more kind and open to others, problem I have will not exist. I'm scared of shcool, I'm scared that all will happen again. My parents yell at me when I say that I don't want to go to shcool, but they don't know why I don't want to be in shcool. Parents want you to have good career and job, and family, but not all kids are the same. Some are introvert, some are shy, some can't defend themselves and some highly sensitive peoples. And all this is in me what makes me different, I think different and because of that others bully me. But at least I'm proud of myself and I'm more stronger, I survived suicidal thought and I help others to go foward and get through deppresion.

I would ask you to talk to your parents and let them know what school is like for you, how you are bullied and how that makes you feel. My Little daughter, Joy, is 5 y and started KG Summer school. It is good for her as it prepares her for the actual school. Every morning she cries and says " I hate the school, I don't want to go" although we have a discussion every night before bed time to encourage her and enthusiast her . She had the same problem last year as she used to go to Pre-school, until i had a meeting with her teacher and I requested to have a chart for her to encourage her. I had a chart for her at home as well and i used to give her stickers and stars when ever she behave. I'll follow your advise and see how it will work. My little guy (4) has selective mutism, so he is very very shy and getting him to school has never been easy, but manageable. He has had a fear of fire alarms since he could Express himself. Around 2!! We don't know why, nothing has ever happened, but he is. Just a few months ago we started making progress with him... Well yesterday at school the fire alarm went off. Not a test. There was a small fire in the gym. So NOW, he is TERRIFIED. It was a GIGANTIC set back and I don't know what to do to help him work through this.

Break down what happened into a story. Write it out and he could even help illustrate. Make sure there is a clear ending where he is safe and the alarm did what it was supposed to do. Create a gratitude feel and then tell him the story, read it again and again. As he sees the whole picture, he will be able to appreciate the value of fire alarms, even if he doesn't like them. Is having weekly counselling sessions to help him, but still doesn't want got to school. He wants to do business, forex, and i introduced him to a mentor to help with that. My grandson does not want to go to school because he is the target of constant bullying. I find it so hard to believe that an educator or the system he belongs to will turn a blind eye on the hardships an innocent and good boy has to undergo each and every day at school. My grandson is small in stature and a little timid, I therefore cannot comprehend why he as a victim is singled out for punishment, while his aggressors go scot free! Elana, I can't explain something that makes no sense. I hope things are being documented and you might see if there is another school he can be transferred to. The school should have an anti-bullying program and help kids to make friends and learn social skills. The counselors usually are in charge of this.

M son is in 10th race and makes me feel so guilty forcing him to get out of my car on the morning. I don't think he understands how much it sucks for me. Ariana Martinez, That might be part of the school culture. Keep in touch with the teachers and principal. Don't ever get upset, just let her know matter-of-factly that this is what she is going to be doing. You can offer an incentive or reward her for positive behavior.

Grandson(11) isn't very sociable, rather play with games. Today he begged to stay home so he would not have to go to band practice. I believe its fear of having to play infront of others. His mother is rather passive and has allowed him to stay home in the past.

My son just started headstart yesterday. He has never attended daycare or even been to a babysitter outside of our home. He is refusing to sit down during story time, follow directions or pick up his toys. He does all of these things at home. He smacked his teacher in the face yesterday when she insisted he stop playing and go sit down. I'm sure she was trying to force him. Today his teacher called jome saying he was refusing to keep his mask on and would have to put it back on his own face because they couldn't do it for him because of germs. Its difficult for him to put it on his own face. He isn't this misbehaved at home and I don't know what to do. He doesn't have behavioral issues normally and is being disruptive in class. I don't know what to do! When I mention he is just 3 years old the teacher rebuttals with the statement that all the other kids are listening. The class has 3, 4 and some 5 year olds. My thoughts are that he has to stay and learn to behave and listen to the teacher and his new environment. I can keep him home for another year but I really feel that he can benefit greatly from being in school. Your advice would be greatly appreciated!

JTFIGS, it sounds like there will be a tough adjustment period for your son. I would give it more time.

Look at different schools. Sometimes you have to find the right fit for your kid.

Hi I like and appreciate your videos on parenting. My child, almost 4yrs old now started disliking to go to pre school from the 3rd yr. But he had attended preschool absolutely with no fuss previously from 18months age. I do talk to my son regularly & found he is not comrfortable with his new teacher. Spoken to the new class teacher as well so that we could work together to improve. But its been 4-5months now still problem persists. Any advice please.

Prokiller Govin, I am not sure that I can help you in one comment on KZbin. Talk with the school counselor and come up with some things that can be done at the school level to help you feel more comfortable and confident.

Explain to her that part of growing up is having time to do things away from our family, but we will always come back together. Be matter-of-fact and this is just what we do.

At home if u hurt a child, it's abuse. But in school u must put up with hours of it. The system gets away with it too. I walked out in 7th grade after a week. Bully robbed me at knifepoint. School did NOTHING about it. I just left after 1st class. Screw school.

School is originally made for factory workers, they test you not educate you, plus its just teaches you about the past not the future maybe is important but now I don't even know why they still teach it when you get to 7th at that point your just learning useless math, reading is the same, science is okay, history is shit we don't really need that ect.

Doc my son is in kindergarten and he hates school. He acts out! I am soo lost. I talk to him. I changed his class and now I have scheduled a in person conference. He isn't use to structured learning. I am more hands on verse public school is wants them to be more independent and test them like crazy. I don't want to bounce him all over the place.

I haven't been to school in 2 months. I don't know what's wrong with me, but I don't seem to care. Last week I had most of my exams, but I didn't go to them.. I can't continue to escape from school. What is the point in living if you aren't happy? I haven't been to school in 2 month. I don't seem to care anymore. I stay in bed all day and go on my phone every day. I see way too much too. I don't care about school anymore I hate that I have given up school s so important because i need to go to university and then get a good job, if I don't finish school that is embarrassing. Even if I don't go to uni straight away, it would be difficult to get hired if u didn't finish school. If I don't finish school then I'm worthless. Right now because I have given up, missed exams, behind on school, not going to school, not doing homework I am scared what is going to happen. I am unable to stop behaving this way and go to school because I'm scared to go. I am ignoring my friends message because I don't want to tell her I haven't done the exams. I feel ashamed. I don't want to see my friends anymore or talk to them. I haven't been out of the house for 2 weeks. I don't want to get out of the house. I feel bad for my parents. They are so kind and understanding, but I'm the worst. My sleeping schedule is a mess I guess. I sleep at 5-8 am and wake up at 3 pm. I am a mess. I feel like I'm just wasting my life away. Not doing anything, but going on my phone all day. The only productive thing I probably do is wash dishes, but that's it basically.

American schools SUCK, compared to some of the best praised, better European models. Yes, we have some great teachers here in the U.S., but we have many terrible, incompetent teachers that just don't know how to teach or inspire interest. Common Core math is ridiculous as well, causing much heartache, stress, and disinterest.
