Love your dream build and I have similar aspirations to build up something similar now that Im older, fatter and wealthier 🤣. I had my race bike built in 1993 using 653 tubing, Shimano 600 STI, dark grey Wolber rims, steel bladed spokes and Mavic sealed bearing hubs and it was a sweet ride. I recall a much older guy in our weekend races who rode a black Colnago with the Campag delta brakes and even though he wasnt that competitive he had the sweetest looking ride in the group and honestly I would drool over it. Im looking to try and build something similar and take my place in the pack as the uncompetitive older dude riding a sweet retro machine 👍🤞

Although we did not see the master painter work on this bike, this still might be one of my favourite of your videos, Andy. Bicycles have meaning to so many of us and it is wonderful to see a dream realized here. As to components, Campagnolo 9-speed is really superb. I am using Chorus on a C40 (albeit with a 10-speed chainset and BB since I wanted a compact setup) and the shifting and braking are first-rate. Glad to see that the components chosen are primarily alloy finish rather than carbon, although I might have gone with a quill stem. But kudos on the Elite Ciusse bottle cage and the Panasonic bottle and kit! Portrait of a happy man cycling, so I say bravo!

Grand job ! Those brakes look perfect as does the rest of the build (the stem looks a bit clumsy but I get why you’ve gone down that route). I too now own my childhood hero bike, it’s a 1986 Raleigh Sbdu 753 in Panasonic colours, stays hung up on the wall & only comes out on high days & holidays ! Best colour scheme Raleigh ever did I reckon.

That's a fantastic story about your dream bike build! It's always great to see someone achieve their childhood dreams, and it sounds like you've put a lot of time and effort into this project. The finished product looks amazing, and I'm sure it's a real joy to ride. I especially like how you've used a mix of new and old parts to create a unique and personal bike. The Campagnolo groupset is a perfect choice for a classic Raleigh frame, and I'm sure it shifts like a dream. The video is also very well done. It's informative and engaging, and I especially liked the timecodes so I could easily jump to different sections. I'm sure this video will inspire a lot of people to start their own vintage bike restoration projects

New bike day is always fun. It is nice to see a modern spin on a vintage frame, especially one with which you have so much connection. I built up a Vitus 979 last year with 26 inch wheels to ride gravel, it is fun to give those old frames new life. I have never used anything beyond the 9 speed group sets, it is interesting to hear the Shimano 11 speed groupsets are so unreliable.

The Vitus sounds interesting, definitely food for thought. I personally think it’s a shame how the industry has continued to compete year on year to get that extra gear on the back. Eventually making the chain thinner and thinner something has to give. Thanks for your support all the best

Andy, watching you bring your childhood dream bike to life with that Raleigh 531 Frame was truly inspiring! It's fantastic to see the 531 Neo Retro build come together so well. Your choice of the Campagnola 9 speed seems perfect, especially considering those unfortunate chain snaps - definitely not something you'd want to keep dealing with. I love the Team Cadette colours and how they resemble the Raleigh Team Corsa. You've done an exceptional job on the 531 frame, and the choice between the C Record Delta Calipers and the more practical adjustable skeleton Chorus brakes really shows your attention to detail and just making it how you want it for practical use. How does the bike feel now after all your hard work? It must be solid, especially with Pete Mathews' masterful wheel building and those slick 25mm tyres. Your use of New Old Stock parts is brilliant. You really bring those childhood memories back to life. So many of us have our dream bikes and you are inspiring us to think about our own builds. Your matching winter kit looks super sharp - you've got the style down to a tee! The Panasonic colours are just the icing on the cake. It's always a pleasure to watch you build and ride these bikes. Thanks for another entertaining video, Andy! Keep them coming!

@simonbailey215111 ай бұрын
As far as I know Campagnolo don’t even produce an 8 speed chain any more and recommend their 9 speed chain for 7- and 8-speed applications. Maybe it’s confirmation bias but I have always noticed an improvement in shifting, using a narrower chain. I’ve also never had an 11-speed chain snap on me, sorry about your woes in that area. Great content by the way, I always enjoy your builds.

I have not been here for a while, Andy. That video was absolutely outstanding, enjoyable and uplifting! I had to reflect ruefully on the contrast of your lovely steed with me recently working on my 1978 Raleigh Grand Prix. My front brake was "pulsing" (on/off-ing) and at the local bike co-operative they identified there was a dent in the (steel 27" Sturmey Archer) wheel rim, surrounded by two "blips" (sitting-proud areas). The Sheldon Brown website suggested I take a hammer to the blip, with the tire inflated. I did, rather nervously, but it has largely fixed the pulsing. I used an adjustable spanner, with the tyre off, to bend out the dent. It's not perfect but it's greatly improved things! 🙂. I just thought the contrast might amuse you. (By the way, I am nearly 80.....). Great video, Andy, and a beautiful bike!

back in the 80s I had this beautiful frame it had campag SR group set mavic gp4 wheels 7 speed had all the kit to mach. it took nearly a year to build saving my money to buy bits. the really upsetting thing is just after a year or so . some kind person to Rob it I was gutted .it was never found watching this just brought back memories. 61 now and it still angers me

Oh mate, not good it’s a terrible shame. I’ve had a few stolen. Knowing that these bicycles last I honestly wonder where are they now. Hopefully not on the scrap heap. It really is a shame. Thanks for watching take care buddy

Thanks Andy for another meticulous build. I love a retro mod; getting a dreamy look with decent shifting and ability to stop! Please may I ask about the saddle height (high?). I want you to preserve those ~50 yr old hips of yours! 🤠 all the best Ian

You have built a lovely bike there mate, definately agree you can live your dreams with decent bike building skills, how hard was it to source the parts in this day and age ?
@BikeItUK11 ай бұрын
Thanks buddy, yes I’m made up with it. Regarding the parts not that hard to find just becoming more expensive. I have lots of 9 speed spare parts now so should see me out.

I can totally understand you😁, I did something similar with an F. Moser Forma. My restomod went a bit further, I used Fulcrum 5 wheels.

Lovely build! I enjoy a bit of neo-retro building myself, and I find that it usually takes me about 18 months of intermittent riding on a new build before I no longer feel compelled to tinker with the saddle/bar position etc. after/during each ride. Are you able to just comfortably ride your new builds right away or do you have to fiddle with them for a while to get them perfectly dialed in?
@BikeItUK11 ай бұрын
I completely agree with what you are saying. Generally I get the odd comment on the first ride out about position etc, and yes the adjusting and swapping takes some time 👍 Glad you enjoyed the build thanks for your support it’s appreciated

Nice build, lots of shiny bits. Out of interest what brand of chain is giving you problems ?
@BikeItUK11 ай бұрын
Hi thanks for watching, regarding the chains I’ve had KMC and Shimano however these could of possibly been fakes after recent knowledge made available

I bought one of these in 89. I had it built with 600.downtube shifters went with toe straps as king Kelly was still using them. if im correct he was the last to win a classic wearing them. also I believe 89 was the first year of sti. great videos as always. my dream bike would be a 87 rosin Ghibli. like what was used in the ads. there used to be an ad in winning back then. owned a few colnagos and time. colnago was the best

Yes I also have a soft spot for a Rossin. I must of been about 14 years of age drooling over the brochures. Sounds like some great memories you have, thanks for taking the time to share them. We’ve definitely lived through a very special time in cycling. Glad you like the build thanks for watching and your support. Happy cycling
