This was amazing! Last yr was my first teaching. I had 6th grade students and I tried but it didn’t work because I constantly had to ask our office assistant to print gator bucks (our school uses a different colored paper each year). For next year I’ll be teaching 7th grade and will definitely do this.

I can’t believe I never knew money in Canada was different colors! That’s cool, love the idea of connecting it to your currency color wise! Wish our money was different colors vs just green!

How do the rewards work? For movies and pj parties does the entire class have to contribute to the $800 or each participating student must pay $800? Idk if I missed that part or not

I remember my bank teller had a crush on me in 4th grade so for some reason she tried to make it so I would never be able to pay rent, she would tell the police officers to give me extra tickets and I would never be able to play at recess ever again. Because we would pay fines for late rent from sitting in the school building during recess. I'm sure the classroom economy is better since 2017.

Oh dear! Haha no problems like that in my classroom. As the teacher, I handle all of the money and I am the only one who can give out fines. I always try to ensure people are being treated fairly and that we are having fun with it! We focus more heavily on rewards than fines.

I love this! How do you handle negative account balances/ students who have fines but no money to pay?

Thank you! 😊 Really good question - this is something I have had to figure out and it also kind of depends on the student. The economy sometimes has to be modified, just like any part of a student’s programming. I usually keep a sheet with notes (unpaid fines, I owe yous between students, etc) on the bulletin board by my desk. Typically though, I will give a student with an unpaid fine an extra job when a student is absent. So if the blinds monitor is absent, I will ask a “poorer” student to take on that role for the day. I know some teachers have a substitute as one of their jobs, but I don’t do this so that I can offer those jobs to the students who need the money. If this isn’t an option, I will find an odd job around the classroom that he/she can do - sorting papers, organizing supplies, cleaning up a mess, etc. My goal is always to give the kids the opportunity to make up for their fine that same day in one way or another.

“Girl caboose and boy caboose.” What happens if you have a student that doesn’t identify as either? I stopped using gender lines and just say numbers 1-15 are in one line and 16-30 are in another line.

I actually eliminated my line leader and caboose jobs early last year too. The kids line up however they’d like!

I only have experience using it with grade 5 students, but I believe you could go younger. I think I would recommend it for grades 4+. They really just need to have good money sense and the maturity to take responsibility for their weekly jobs.
