Honestly. Like if the friend ACTUALLY thought OP was gifting her the lamp, she would not have gone nuclear when OP was like "no it's a family heirloom and I want it back". She had bad intentions written all over, but it does sound like she got some sense knocked into her and gave it back.

Yeah I think a lot of us learned in middle school or high school (perhaps college or later, idk anyones life except my own) that long does not equal good. Sometimes we mesh better with people we met 1 year ago than someone we've known for 10 years and that's just how it is. Nothing against long friendships, but they are not inherently more valuable than shorter ones. I guess the valuable part is that you knew someone in a different phase of their life and got to see how they grew from it.

The thing about getting things in writing tho, at least from my experience, is that it doesn't have to be a formal agreement with signatures. You can just take the conversation to text or email and BOOM backup.
