I am actually sad for OP. This isnt simply another case of a son putting his mother first. This is an abuse victim who was complety tied to their abuser, who they didnt even realise had harmed them. It's sad, but I am glad he stepped up to be the good parent he never got

One thing for Trev's continuing D & D activities is looking into playing as a Kenku. Kenkus are a race of humanoid ravens that have been stricken by a curse that makes it so they can only communicate by imitating sounds they've heard and memorized, much the way parrots will do, so this would be a good way to work Trev's deafness in as kenkus are mute as a species. I'd also imagine that most Kenkus also use sign language to communicate, so that would be a good way to explain Trev's own signing for a roleplay aspect. As for OP, if she decides to play as well, I'd suggest she look into playing a martial class, like fighter, rogue, or barbarian for her first time, as I've heard that keeping track of spell mechanics can get overwhelming for new players, and those will be something a new player will need to get on top of to efficiently play one of the caster classes, like a cleric, sorcerer, or wizard.

I kind of want to peek into the alternate universe where mom didn't blow a gasket but instead just tried to pull the surprise party anyways. Hearing the plan, it would so obviously fail at dad's door, the way it just wouldn't have worked would probably have been a sight to see, especially since mom wouldn't actually be able to stay there and pressure her without delaying Layla's party that she was throwing herself.

*Learning a language isn't a crime or a red flag, people!!* This is NOT "obsession" or "emotional manipulation," this is a guy who is 1. trying to be courteous enough to include *everyone* in the conversations he's around, INCLUDING HIMSELF, and 2. someone who is genuinely trying to make friends with a fellow gamer. Trust me, Call of Duty players LOVE having someone to play with whom they know they can "trash-talk" with in *safe* ways! Like it or not, it's part of the CoD gaming culture, and when done with people you know won't take it too far, it's a great bonding experience. (In this case, the brother knows he can't take it too far because his sister knows where he sleeps at night, and the BF is stuck in the same looming-threat from his GF situation, lol.) I really wish people would stop Othering and Separating out folks who don't communicate "exactly" like they do. Sign Language is no different than Spanish or Japanese or whatever. The BF is 100% free to learn a new language in order to better hang out with the people he likes. I suggest the GF politely tells her other friends to STFU and stop being bigotted about someone learning a language. Now, if there were *other* red flag signs, that'd be a different matter, but it just sounds like the BF found a new friend as well as a GF, and wants to communicate better. I wish everyone ELSE was more open to doing stuff like that!

i recomend watching youtube videos about dnd, start with "dnd basics" and "dnd 101" type videos, and then when you find rules or concepts you want to know more about, find videos about that specific topic, and let the rabbit hole consume you Alternatively, if that is a bit too educational for your taste, find videos of people playing the game, which is usually really funny, and then google things every time there is something you don't understand (it's basically like a group of friends writting/telling a story togther, like the game where you make up a story, but every person only gets 1 sentence or word, making the story very wacky), the most popular playthrough being Critical Role (Watching the dnd movie, or Vox Machina is also a good way to get motivated to play and learn about dnd) Of course, you could also just raw dog the Players Handbook, finding a pdf of it online, but that's pretty hardcore Finally, the very best method, find a friend that already plays and start/join a game with them, like languages, you learn best from actually using the skill

you can find folks online to play with, there are people looking for groups all the time (r/lfg looks good. i joined my d&d group off amino when i was 14 & ive been playing with them for 6 years now), also if you live in a city or near a town there might be a game shop that runs d&d! (though you normally have to pay to join those).

There are a lot of channels covering Reddit so if you bounce from channel to channel (because YT keeps recommending them) you will think the channels are repeating themselves where as they are not. It's like watching sports coverage, when something happens in sports, every story on every outlet will be talking about the same thing. ScalingStories channel, I always notice that this channel picks up Reddit stories a day or two later than the rest. However I believe this is because the ScalingStories channel puts in a lot more work per story to make them better and is the best channel on YT doing this. After watching like 80+channels do this, you'd be surprised how many issues come up when making an unedited Reddit story into a YT video.

As someone who has older sister who generally seems to despise him, who has financially abused me and has used her own kids as leverage against my parents I can relate to what this guy went through. NC is the absolute best thing he could have done. Keeping an open mind is fine, but there are some things you can't come back from and I'm afraid the sisters crossed that line by leaps and bounds.
