I love that you write first then decorate. For some reason I always decorate first and then am stuck with whatever space I have leftover for writing. With writing first, I can get my thoughts down and then decorate around it. Not sure why I hadn't done this before. Thanks for the inspiration!

I like how you say you choose a theme first before working on the spread. I find that that makes it easier for me to start the journaling process otherwise I'd get like writer's block. I generally choose a color scheme to help me. I think one day I may try a subject matter theme as inspired by this video.
