I can't figure out why we need to know everyone's sexuality, like it's a news story. So bizarre to me. If you want to say, be proud, cool, but when folks are outed these days. No. It doesn't need to be people's whole personality either, there are lots of things that make up who we are. 😊

Its so weird that as a millennial u forget that life worked fine without internet before it was in our pocket 24/7. I was backpacking the world when I was 20, no phone, just a pile of Lonely Planet books, went to a Internet cafe once a week to email my family that I was alive and fine. I almost can’t understand how it was possible when I think about it now. And that is so sad actually

On the topic of protecting children on the internet, the mom from 8 passengers ( a horrific family channel) was arrested recently for aggravated child abuse. While I’m happy she’s been arrested, it is just so unbelievably sad for the children and what they’ve gone through. I really hoping this sparks social media to make rules around exploiting children. One can hope!

Thank you for the sleep training talk. I felt so forced into sleep training and my baby would cry and cry and I would have to go OUTSIDE while my husband stayed near the room because I felt sooooo guilty. She eventually learned to sleep in her bed but then got sick at 18 months with Covid and we had her cosleep with us to monitor her breathing and she’s never gone back to her bed since.. she’s now 3 and she has a bed next to ours. I wouldn’t want it any other way now. I’m 38 weeks pregnant with my second and I’ll never ever sleep train again. It’s ridiculous how we are made to feel like babies should sleep long stretches without mom. NO OTHER MAMMAL SLEEPS WITHOUT THEIR OFFSPRING… If they do it’s brief and for a reason… it’s just making me feel so guilty for doing that to my daughter. They are not crying for unnecessary attention; they’re scared. 😭 I will never get over that guilt in my first year as a first time new mom. I listened to way too many other’s opinions.

Kristi, I applaud and appreciate how you clarify your feelings and opinions about controversial subjects. I admire how forthright and honest you are without being judgmental. I wish when I was a new mother I had had someone like you speak out and make me realize there is no absolute umbrella solution for how to care for and raise your newborn. You just need to do what you have to do and what works best for you and your baby. I also completely stand with you on politics. I don’t trust anyone in the political forum anymore and haven’t for a while. I just wanted to tell you how much I like your well spoken commentary. I have PCOS and have struggled with my weight as an adult, especially after giving birth to my daughter 10 years ago. I use the weight loss version Wegovy and it has been a game changer for me. I have had chronic pelvic pain from ovarian cysts for 20 years, and for the first time I'm not in debilitating pain. That alone has been the reason I keep using it. Honestly, the weight loss is just an added bonus at this point.

I will say that I’m a twin mom and for the first 9 months of my twins’ lives, I just never slept because they weren’t synced up and I was literally just always awake. It was like whack-a-mole. I’d get one down and the other would pop up needing to be fed. I was breastfeeding too so it had to be me that got up and took care of them. I was a depressed, exhausted wreck. The only thing that saved me was sleep training because it got them both on the same schedule and within 3 days they really were sleeping through the night and taking 2 scheduled naps a day, which I got to finally have to myself so I could get some rest. I know sleep training is not for everyone but I was literally so unwell, physically and mentally, until I did it. Taking Cara Babies didn’t work for me but Little Z’s did.

I am a "plus sized nurse" I also feel better when I lose weight. It always creeps back. However, recently I have been having a run of young (35-50 years old) patients who are 300lb and over. Lab wise they tend to be diabetic, but not aware. Otherwise their labs seem to be on the high side of normal. The problem I am seeing is they have surgery and just 1 or 2 days in bed and they become severely weakened. They need physical therapy just to be able to get up to the bathroom. I find that for those of us who are overweight being ill makes us so weak that we cannot function. One patient ended up becoming bed bound over the year he spent in treatment. It was such hard work to get his body moving again that he gave up and just ordered door-dash to his room. We sent him to a nursing room. (Yes we had psych see him for his emotional needs) His surgery was a Laproscopic gallbladder removal. Right now the "fat" people are saying "I am fine and you are mean" but really we are one sickness from being immobile! Beingfat and being healthy is not really healthy. I am making lifestyle changes myself because I do want to be weakened.

I teach a dual credit Rhet and Comp course to high school students, and the first semester focuses on literacy and writing. I try to theme the term with those concepts, and we are focusing on media literacy this year. The whole section about how we are too plugged in, receiving too much information, and it's increasing stress and anxiety is a major part of our focus (inspired by Stolen Focus). I'm considering playing the snippet of that for a hook for students. Smashing it RBK!

I love you fact that you can look at different parenting methods and say it wasn't for you but also understand that everyone has to do what's right for their family. I wish there was more of this because I've texted my mom friend in tears before over how rude people have been over my and my husband's parenting decisions. My friend is a stay at home mom (I'd love to be but we can't swing it) and she parents differently, but she has never been judgmental. If I didn't have a friend in real life that we are nothing but respectful of each other parenting choices, it would be a hard road. If feel like it's not hard to understand that every family and child is different and that's okay. The internet has a hard time with that.

For context, I was a longtime personal trainer and have had plenty of my own struggles with eating disorders, compulsive exercise and some degree of body dysmorphia, so I understand the sensitive nature of these topics. I'm also older (45) and I think that informs some of where I come from because I've witnessed these dramatic shifts in the overall size of the general public, as well as changes in attitudes, language, advertising etc. I think we need to find a way to distinguish between being considerate about the fact that we have been sold a bunch of shitty lies about how our bodies are "supposed" to be, and the ACTUAL reality that there are very real, very deadly health conditions that are associated with chronic obesity. It's not shaming people to say that certain health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease have exploded in number as much of our society has physically grown. There are many very complex reasons for this, which are very much tied to American farming policy and subsidization, food processing and pricing, advertising, socioeconomic inequality and other factors. The last thing I think is productive is to shame people and assume it's some type of simple self-control issue that is at the heart of people's physical statuses. It's so much broader than that. When I was younger, there wasn't a dialysis center in every town. Now there are several. This is the kind of thing that troubles me deeply. I don't want people to feel bad about their bodies. I want them to feel well, to be able to live free of serious illness and medication and to be able to live long and healthy lives. Sorry this is a wall of text, just some strong feelings I wanted to share among friends.

I appreciate your honest thoughts on sleep training. My son is 2.5 and I haven’t been able to bring myself to do it. It feels inherently wrong to ignore his cries. There have been times he’s been very ill, had temporary separation anxiety, and been scared of the dark. I’m impressed that any moms can do it, but since he will most likely be my only child I am fine with laying with him every night and sleeping with him (when needed).

My mom’s method with infants was to go about her daily business with us sitting on the floor in our car seat. She’d just carry us from room to room and put in ear plugs when we were fussy. My siblings and I all got used to the sounds of the radio, pots banging in the kitchen, the vacuum (in another room, she was careful with our hearing) and conversations. She said after a few months we could sleep through absolutely anything, and the stimulation during the day kept us sleeping well at night. She said it was strange seeing the pivot to “must not make a sound around the baby” that happened in the late 90s.

A study was done how our brains don’t retain important information anymore because we’ve come to be reliant on searching things so easily on the internet. It’s so true too. I remember last year I was planting pumpkins for the first time and I read when the best time to plant them was, shade or no shade etc… and then 20 mins later and I’m ready to plant and I didn’t retain any information that I read. I started buying books to become less reliant on searching things up. I have so many gardening and homesteading books now 🤣 and when I tell myself I can’t look it up and actually read from my books it sticks better. Also I know you said you’re a skeptic for the paranormal and aliens etc. (I don’t trust why the govt is saying there are aliens now) but please listen to the podcast blurry creatures! Love it.

It is seriously so important to talk about, and the normal biological sleep needs especially for babies, and I agree moms need more support and sleep training is not always the answer, if it was then people wouldn’t need to sleep train the same baby multiple times… I personally found in motherhood following and tuning into your instincts is best and screw whatever society says because 99% of the world outside of the US cosleeps and thinks sleep training is abuse so 🤷🏻‍♀️

On the topic of sleep training, I think sometimes it is absolutely best for the baby. My daughter (now 14 months) has always been a “bad sleeper”. Been cosleeping basically since day 1 bc she refuses to be in a bassinet/crib and loves to constantly nurse all night. So her constant nursing forced me, someone who loves to move around in bed, to lay in 1 position forever lest I wake her up. So I fall asleep in said position, inevitably wake up soon after, and carefully try to switch positions. As soon as I even THINK about moving she wakes up, and the cycle repeats. This was destroying my sleep AND hers. While I’m still working on getting her out of the bed, sleep training has already changed both of our lives so much 🙌🏽

Sleep training was so hard and felt so unnatural for me. Truly, the two days it (mostly) took to train my son I think were harder on me than him… I cried so hard, but my mental well-being had gotten to a place where it was necessary. So, I definitely can see all points on this topic. Sleep training was not something I necessarily “wanted” but I absolutely had to and it wasn’t easy, but now I’m glad I did. I can be a better/ more-present and patient wife and mom. Parenting is not “one size fits all.” We all have different kids with different needs and personalities and different environments to work with and different needs of our own. It’s silly to take a hard stance on any parenting method when figuring out what a child needs is like putting together a unique, one- of-a-kind puzzle. You may have put together a beautiful puzzle, but your pieces won’t work with the one I’m putting together. Wish more people understood that.

Of course there’s no way of knowing what I’ll actually do in the situation, but when I have kids (hopefully 1-2 years from now) I fully plan to sleep train. @@calathea81 Right. I understand that. I didn’t breastfeed but about 4 months with my first (hoping to go longer with my 2nd that’s due next month.) You have to figure out and do what works for you, your child, your lifestyle, and your peace. It’s not easy, it can break your heart when you’re not able to do things the way that “feels best” but is necessary. Parenting is hard, no matter how you approach it.

I’ve been confused about the controversies of sleep training since having my son last year. Maybe that’s because my son took to it so well. I stay to myself these days. People are cruel to new moms.

Exactly. Given the fact that we do have so much information at our fingertips, new facts/evidence about things we thought we were correct about are bound to come out. I don’t understand how someone can be confronted with new, concrete evidence and STILL remain willfully ignorant in their view/opinion. This might offend someone, but I think looking back at how everyone acted regarding Covid-and knowing what we know now, ALOT of ppl who were die hard maskers and vaxxers are coming out and saying they wished they hadn’t been so aggressive about it and wish they actually hadn’t gotten the vaccine, as we have no clue what the long term effects will be. But we do know that there are health problems coming about left and right from ppl who got it. That’s just one example of many, but I hope more ppl will begin to learn from their mistakes and we can sit on the fence a little longer before coming down and making a decision/telling OTHERS if they do or don’t do something, then they’re evil.

Regarding the babies sleep... follow your instincts and what's best for your individual child. I have 3 children. My first started sleeping through the night at 6 weeks. My second did not sleep through the night until he was 3. My third was born sleeping thru the night. Problem was 2nd and 3rd child are only 18 months apart, so my youngest wanted the dark room by herself. We had to move her into the nursery we made for my second and let him cosleep with us to keep him from waking her up. Long story short, every child is born different, and you know what is best for your family. Who cares what anyone else's opinion is. It's your child and you know what's best for them.
