Big controversy down through the years about that Oscar. She was a relative unknown up against a lot of top-tier British actresses, and some thought that Jack Palance (who announced the winner'name at the awards) had trouble reading the name on the card and instead just repeated the last name on the teleprompter. Palance tried to address the accusation that he was getting too old at a later Oscar ceremony by doing one-handed pushups.

As a juror, I've been part of 7 different cases over the past 20 years. Four were civil - three were criminal. The civil were incredibly boring. As for the criminal, two were settled while we were waiting in the morning to come into the courtroom. The other went the distance and was rather interesting. So, of the seven I was part of, one had interest to me - not a great percentage. BTW - since you are an attorney, would others like yourself prefer professional juries who had understanding of local laws and such? Or do you prefer the selection process of the general public. IMO, I find 90% of people find jury duty something of a major hinderance and most try to get out of. If they do actually get chosen, I'm not sure they have the heart into it. A professional however should always be good to go since that's how they earn a paycheck. Depending on jurisdiction, I don't know - $60K each to a pool of anywhere from 15-150 jurors depending on town/city size?
@cavaliertunes33322 жыл бұрын
@@mil2k11 I think that a professional jury could be a great idea. But it’s something that needs to be explored through trial programs first. A professional jury might introduce unintended biases into the system (e.g., are professionals more likely to side with the prosecutor than a more randomized selection from the populace?). I’d also have to research whether a professional jury presents any constitutional problems (on the state- or federal-level). It would almost definitely be challenged if implemented, and I’m sure the Supreme Court would weigh in on whether it’s constitutionally permissible.

I give this movie "two yoots." "Two _whaaaats?"_ Marisa Tomei was pretty much an unknown actress until this movie, and all she did was go out and win the Oscar. Today, she's best known as Aunt May in the Tom Holland Spider-Man films. Others have pointed out Fred Gwynne's star turn as Herman Munster. He was already a tall drink of water in his stocking feet, and he wore these huge platform boots as Herman, making him well over 7 feet tall. He absolutely towered over everyone else on that show. Despite looking like Frankenstein's Monster, he had a really goofy dad personality. The sheriff was Bruce McGill. His best-known role was as Daniel Simpson Day from _National Lampoon's Animal House._ He's the guy that stole the police car at the end of the movie. You now must see _Goodfellas._ It's a (somewhat) real-life Mob story from the 1960s through the 80s. That's the movie that won Joe Pesci his Oscar.

The first decent nights sleep he had came after his first decent day in court. I interpreted it to be that the noise wasn't really to blame for his sleepless nights. It was his nerves. Once he finally started to gain confidence, he was able to sleep.

It's also fairly accurate. When I did Basic Training in the Army there were a lot of "city guys" constantly asking about sounds in the woods. Also, the Eastern Screech Owl's habitat is from Texas up to North Dakota and every state east of there (so MOST of the US), and they have a wide range of noises, including a call that is loud and scary if you don't know what you're hearing.

9:47 so the guy who eats the entire chicken leg in one bite is my uncle Ronnie! My dad told me he was a realtor in Greensboro, Georgia where they were filming and the production crew rented some houses from him so they wouldn’t have to drive back and forth from Atlanta every day. Joe Pesci asked him if there was a golf course nearby and he invited him and the director to play a few rounds. They all really hit it off apparently and Joe Pesci asked the director if they could add my uncle in one of the scenes as a thank you for renting out the houses to them and they did!

The issue with his qualifications is that, even he's passed the bar, he hasn't passed the bar in Alabama. A judge may rule that an attorney from a different jurisdiction (like NY) could practice in a given trial (called pro hac vice, or in this matter). So, the judge asks him about his history to decide whether to approve this. For cases where the death penalty is a possibility (a capital case), the defense attorney has to be established as having a substantial practice history in criminal defense, usually second chairing (assisting) in other capital cases. All in all, My Cousin Vinny is one of the most accurate legal movies ever. My Evidence professor showed us clips of it in Law School.

I know I'm replying to this thread a year late, but i just feel I need to answer Ashleigh. "I don't know what could have made this movie five stars for me" she asked. Well let me tell you. I'm 47, not a boomer, but Gen x. Still old enough to remember a television show called, "The Munsters" where Fred Gwynne, the actor that plays the judge, stars as Herman Muster. Herman was Franenstien's monster in kind of a Adam's family vibe family. Anyhow, as entertaining as he was in roles like Herman Muster, Fred Gwynne was a classically trained Shakespeare'ian actor who spent a large chunk of his screen time doing a role that any one could have done. Besides all the things that make "My Cousin Vinny" great it was for people like me especially heart warming to see this LEGEND of an actor finally shine on the silver screen. A bitter sweet performance since he died in 1993, and this was his last movie before his death. Five Stars all the way.

I love how the lowly Grit has prominent role in the film. Every time I see this movie it reminds me of my first week in the Army ( 1983) and all the northern boys didn’t have a clue what to do with them so they tried to treat them like cream of wheat or oatmeal and put sugar, milk, or syrup on them to try to choke them down. Us southern boys showed them that all they needed was butter and salt but they still couldn’t figure out why we liked them.

One of the things I picked up visiting my mother in South Carolina was eating grits (the "real" ones, not the instant ones) at breakfast. They're getting harder and harder to find in New York. If you miss them, you miss the "punch-line" or reveal. As several people have said, the more you watch it the funnier and better it gets. For the month of "Love Beans", I would like to recommend 2 great staples of 80s / 90s romance movies: Say Anything, it has a few people you may recognize plus some very memorable quotes, bits, and troupes. Plenty of "mighty" men have cried during this movie: Some Kind of Wonderful, this one will bring 2 beautiful ladies seen before in "Back to the Future" and "Fried Green Tomatoes". Both also have a great soundtrack. This also has memorable quotes, bits, and troupes. Both help define and mentally shape a generation of lovers. Sincerely hoped you get around to watching.
