Big projects command an investment; of time, mental capital, physical effort and most of all, emotional currency. But with these monumental tasks comes the potential for great reward. This untitled painting by an unknown artist of Bacchus will require just a bit of everything we do in the studio, and while perhaps not the most complicated project we've encountered, it will demand, and demand, and demand once again. The question is will it be worth it?

I'm such a Baumgartner Restoration geek. An ignorant geek but a geek none the less. I'm 12 minutes in and having reactions like, "why is he not saying washi kozo???" Is this a different paper??? and "What! no impregnation to secure the old paint back to the canvas???" I know nothing but what I've learned from watching you. Just a geek to your channel. I get all excited when you post a new video and just to be honest, sometimes I go back to watch an old one again just to get my fix!!!! Thanks for being amazing!

Julian, before watching your channel, I would not have believed that I would regularly choose to spend time watching videos in which many tedious and repetitive tasks are required and demonstrated to restore a damaged painting, turning it back into a work of art. I would not have believed I would enjoy and learn so much, no matter how talented the craftsman was. I would have been wrong. In addition, because of your high standards and work ethic I have developed an appreciation for honoring and preserving the voice of any artist through respectfully and appropriately handling their work. Thank you.

I don't think anyone who does really detailed work ever really knows what they are getting into with each new project. I do specialty alterations and customizations of bridal and formal dresses for more than 25 years and I think you're one of the only people I could understands what I go through and what's at stake when you undertake these projects. I spent 60+ hours on the last wedding dress and 10 were picking clear thread stiches out of tule fabric which with one slip of the seam ripper I would put a hole in it that would require restitching to repair and hide. So, I need to say a huge "THANK YOU!!!" for being a voice of tenacity in my head because the whole time I was in that process and then in the equally challenging restitching appliques and hundreds of beads and sequins, I kept thinking, at least I'm not scraping glue off with a scalpel....HAHA! Also, thank you for cleaning with beautiful music, it's great therapy for me.♥

A little information about me. I am a painter although I am not professional. I paint for the joy and nothing more. I do not sell my work nor have I ever But I have also visited Paris and I have visited Italy and I am a fond lover of true artwork ability and creativity. I just happen to catch on one of this gentleman's videos and began watching and I have not stopped since. He and I share a mind that I didn't realize was anywhere else on the planet. His detail to cleaning and preparation and the emotion of the painting makes me want to work for him. I wish that I could be there in this shop to assist him with this beautiful work. I am impressed by him his knowledge his passion his ability and his sheer excellence. I am overwhelmed with everything he has done and is doing and I don't know of anyone else like him on the planet. It would be a joy one day to meet someone of this caliber. I look at his work and I wonder how much of a thrill it would be to work there and see something go from a state of devastation to a state of heavenly beauty

You put so much into these pieces, you definitely become part of the provenance of these works. I'm sure you fully document your work for your files -- hi-res photos/scans at various stages of the restoration (original, cleaned but unretouched, final), notes about the chemistry & solvents, stretcher details, etc., and I assume most/all of this information is communicated back to the owner for future custodians of the piece. We've seen you biting your tongue about prior conservers on a lot of projects; it's a great responsibility (and source of pride) to not be part of that problem, and to imagine someone a hundred years from now saying "Oh, this went through Baumgartner's studio? I can find exactly what he did, and there won't be any shenanigans. What a relief!" BTW, it's lovely to see the Porsche again. That is by far the cleanest lift I've ever seen on KZbin. 🤣

Argh! I hate a cliff hanger! There's so much loss too. T_T This poor painting. That is a very daunting restoration project, but I am confident the final result will be stunning and I am eagerly awaiting part 2!
