I love this!! I totally relate to the mental gymnastics of trying to convince myself my hair wasn’t heat damaged!!

I am the beginning stages in the curly method. Which I am very excited. I am trying so many new products and I am loving my curls!! I use to straighten my hair more often that I would like. I could see the damage I was causing to my hair. I know it will take some time for me to get my hair healthy and it’s Ok. I know I am on my way to recovery!! Thanks to all of you lady’s for taking the time to teach us new methods. And new products. I am loving this!! 💜💜💜

I love your authenticity! Like you, I discovered an overwhelming mass of information on social media. I am still sorting through to get a handle on all of it. I am arriving late to this journey because I didn’t ‘straighten’ my hair my whole life… it WAS straight. I was searching the internet to find out why I was a mass of frizz and how I could help my suddenly damaged hair, only to discover that it is probably slightly damaged, but it is also now wavy/curly. I’ll take that gift from the cocktail of hormones that menopause is over the rest that I was able to avoid… What you said about how you felt about yourself resonated too. I’ve been hiding my frizzy mess in a “covid bun” for two years, but no more! Your video was posted long ago, but I am just beginning my journey. (a month and a half in) Thanks for sharing your experiences=!

I’ve gotten so much more confident now that I’m curly. I never straighten. I realize how much better I look with curls. I also get way more compliments on my hair then I did when I straightened. I started late 2005 so I’m all transitioned now but I’m am just realizing how much protein I need so I’m still on a journey trying to make it even better 👍🏾

100% AGREE!! I've been transitioning now for about a year & 1/2, and like you I "fell off the wagon" - or more like didn't quite completely get on for a while - early on in my journey, but what I was really doing was experimenting with my hair & trying to learn what was best for me & my hair, & discovering what I like & want....And I'm STILL discovering this! But for me, I never accepted my wavy hair in my entire life, EVER, so I had been straightening since the '80s up until 1.5 years ago....Yes, I was a rare high schooler who was VERY anti the whole big hair, bad perm, frizz-head era & wanted the straight, healthy, & shiney hair portrayed by some actresses in the late 60s& early 70's instead. Now I am slowly uncovering that I can have hair WITHOUT split ends that is shiney, healthy, has volume, and has beautiful & bouncy waves - and am LOVING it! Just like you, I have found that heat styling has been my worst enemy. Don't use a straightening iron or straightening brush, EVER, ,& oh what a difference tat makes! Products also make a big difference, but I'm also learning that fear-mongrring of some ingredients is also ridiculous & is sometimes used as a marketing tool of over-priced products. The key is to not always use cheap stuff ladened with one thing that can build up, but rather to include clarifying in your routine & to understand the protein/moisture balance YOUR hair needs.

Loved this! Was really nice to learn about your journey (and laugh as there are so many weird habits I had too 😂) I always HATED my curly hair and would do anything to hide it. I straightened it from age 12. At age 25 I went on holiday with my (then new) bf and I had to start practising leaving it curly as it was going to be hot (Thailand) and it was such a big deal, even though all I did was wash it, dry the front (no curly baby hairs 😂) and tie it tightly up - it was so tight against my head and stuck with hairspray. I then started doing it when working full time Mon-Thurs and then straightening it Fri-Sun for YEARS. I washed it everyday and I used SO MUCH Tresemme hair spray! I’ve contributed to global warming for sure! In recent years, I’ve felt so ugly doing that in the week and I wouldn’t like going out after work with my hair like that. I’ve always been scared of volume (so I totally get about not liking it or wanting to go out in public) and it’s been a genuine thing to get used to even now I’ve started CGM, but I did start to want it in recent years as my hair was sooo flat when I straightened it and just felt lank. So glad I found you; you’ve helped me so much and I’ve had some great, consistent results lately. THANK YOU. I actually love my curls and, like you, I like myself because of them and it’s nice to feel like myself. ❤️ A long one but thought I’d share!

Thanks for telling your story! I am just starting to embrace my naturally curly hair but it’s been frustrating. I am Chinese and it’s unusual to have curly hair. I have been perming my hair straight for 20 years and just stopped 2 years ago because I got pregnant. So now I’ve been trying different products and learning styling techniques. But it’s been so frustrating since it takes so much longer to shower and style hair curly than it did when I had straightened hair. And since I shower at night even if it looked good it would look like crap the next morning even tho I put my hair up in a pineapple. I also have weird curl/wave pattern with almost straight hair at the nape of my neck and 2c/3a waves/curls everywhere else so it looks ridiculous. I hope I will be able to make as much progress as you have. Your hair looks fantastic!!

You have a friend here going through the exact same thing right now. And, how does one do life with curly hair, ie., helmets, sweaty head workouts, hats, wind, rain? It’s been very frustrating. Know I’m right here with you going through the same thing. I’m determined to keep going, tho. I do want my hair healthy and I do know I’ll eventually figure this out in time.

@@brendaoquin It’s been 11 months since I posted that comment and I think have made good progress with my hair. I have had a couple of devacuts and that made a huge difference! I wash my hair every 2-3 days so the extra time it takes for me to style my hair kind of evens out. I still struggle with how much more effort it takes to take care of curly hair compared to straight hair but I’m learning to accept what’s been given to me :). Keep going it gets better!

Um wow! My hair used to be as curly like yours when I was in high school. Now my hair looks like your damaged photos (I'm about 6 months CG, my hair was almost straight when I started). I was convinced that my hair just wasn't ever going to be that curly anymore and that my "texture changed." But hey, I think I need to go buy some Bounce Curl because you just gave me hope.

RE Mental Gymnastics/ Denial about hair damage: I told myself that my hair was getting alarmingly thin cause it was "getting so long". Twas a rolling blow dryer (blow dryer with rolling brush in one) literally dragging out strands daily. Used it all winter. No hair left in spring. Lol (nervous laugh)

Lol! I did a lot mental gymnastics as well! I somehow convinced myself that if i only straighten the ends of my hair it will remain healthy at the roots. Now that I'm embracing my curls, my ends did not curl AT ALL. I cut them off and noticed more ringlets than waves. It's been 6 months now with no heat tools and i went from 2b to 3a.

I’ve been wearing my hair curly for SO many years (don’t ask) but just recently got on a major kick to take better care of it. My hair just never seemed to gain any length. Breakage was the enemy. Enter protein treatments! I had the Aphogee 2-step dealio tucked away in a drawer (unused😳) so pulled that bad boy out. What an immediate difference THAT made!! Unfortunately, I am now finding that my ultra fine hair appears to have way WAY less density. Granted, that could also be from the crap DIY cut I gave myself. Oh heavy sigh. I wasn’t prepared for a curve ball. So not cool! Your video has helped me come to terms with the fact that the long layers I was hoping for just aren’t in the cards for my hair right now…to the salon!

I’ve only recently discovered your channel and I love it! Your journey story is cracking me up 😂 I love how honest you are about it. I did my journey several yrs ago and then got lazy with it. So now, I am starting again. I know I have more curl than what my hair is visibly showing. Can’t wait to see it start coming back to life.

I try to have balance with my washing with proteins, humectants and emolients. I don't straighten my hair and my hair looks like 13:11 at best and 6:01 at worst. But your video is quite inspiring. Honestly - I don't really care if my hair is curly or wavy - I just want my hair to look healthy. Btw - how can you style hair upside down and don't get crow's nest at the back of your head?
