My CURSE STRIKES AGAIN! Expensive Disaster for My Ford GT

I can't believe this has happened AGAIN, and this time it's going to be expensive. We're taking my Ford GT and Mustang Dark Horse to visit the phenomenal Shelby American Collection in Boulder, Colorado, but first up is finding out how much this repair is going to cost. And, it's not good news!
After venturing up from Texas, via a stop with ‪@HooviesGarage‬ in Kansas, we ventured over with the cars to Denver, ready for some fun in Colorado, and first up a visit to a place I have been keen to visit for a long time - the Shelby American Collection. Home to the only surviving GT40 Prototypes, the winningest Shelby Daytona Coupe, numerous ex-Ken Miles cars, Carrol Shelby's original Cobra and more; it's dreamland!
However, our first stop is at Sil-TerHar Ford, where I promptly find out that it's $3,300 for the glass with sales tax, plus installation labour, plus one-time use parts, the final bill actually goes through $5,000. The only 'funny' side of it, is that I fully intended to get some protection on the glass beforehand, but due to really bad weather, we had to change plans and unfortunately didn't have time to do so - sometimes it's just bad luck.
As a Ford guy, and somebody rather obsessed with the GT story, and what lead us to today, the amount of history under one roof at the Shelby American Collection is beyond belief. However, after we get back on the road, we're heading to visit another awesome private car collection in the area. Featuring the likes of the F40, Carrera GT, Diablo, Speciale, and some very nice Porsches to round out the garage.

Shmee , I highly recommend you put clearplex windshield protection film on your fleet of cars this product will save you lots of headaches, or ExoSheild also works . It's not that expensive but gives you a bit more peace of mind

Glass is cheap, they charge for the handling because it’s fragile and can easily get damaged during transport

Moved to Colorado about 6yrs ago from south FL. Been through my fair share of windshields across various vehicles. All it takes is a pebble to fling off a car wheel in front of you.

lol colorado native here, it's not uncommon to go through at least one windshield per car a year. i even had a rock blow a hole in my sideview mirror cap once. it was still sitting inside of it when i looked at it lol

Any windshield place should be able to do a “repair” on that crack. What they do isn't actually a repair at all, but they'll drill a little dimple at the end of the crack and then fill it which stops the crack spreading and getting worse before you get a chance to get a replacement. It's inexpensive and quick. Where I live (Alberta) cracks are so common there are little stands in grocery store parking lots that can affect a repair while do your weekly shop, although a place with a fixed address might be more appropriate for the GT.

While you are waiting for the windscreen, a specialty service like "Safelite" may be able to do a temporary "fill" of the crack with their resin/superglue treatment to disguise the break & make it less distracting and also discourage it from lengthening. I know they do this for little star type chips and I've seen how they can sometimes use a syringe with the resin/glue where it just follows and fills the visible crack and they just razor off the overflow on the surface to make it look almost new, 'temporarily'. It's like an "osmosis" trick.

What an AMAZING racing car museum. As Shmee said that was some racing car royalty on display. I will have to see that museum myself and that private garage was epic! Tim , you should start applying PPF on the windshield as well. Do some research , it’s also a common issue with G wagons , because of the flat windshield it cracks easily.

not reccomended, if they have to break the windshield to pull out Tim it may not shatter. now imagine being stuck upside down or in the water.

@@michelhickey5765lolololol . Windshields of the modern day do not shatter . They are made from laminated glass and not tempered like most side windows and rear windows . PPF or no PPF, they’re gonna struggle to get him out from the front regardless if he went belly up

If it rains a lot in the area its not really recommended since the ppf on the windshield wears out the wiper motors

Does your insurance not cover your windshield? It's mandated that it does, in many states. This should be a $250 problem, or whatever your insurance deductible is.

@@kam99_ Do you understand how insurance works? I'm sure the replacement cost of the windshield is exactly what Shmee says it is. The issue is who pays for it. In the United States, the insurance company does, if you have proper coverage. You only have to pay your insurance deductible, whatever that is.

In the early 70’s I was 7/8, I heard a roar outside. There was a Mustang 350GT Cobra couple, finished in blood red, with a black strip through the middle. At the time we where in a petrol shortage, when we went down hill he would put into neutral 😂 What makes me smile the most, he dropped me off at school, also we lived in Morecambe, at the time, were an Escort was the norm.

I'm so glad that I bought glass insurance for all of my vehicles here in Malaysia. Basically just annually paid and no matter how many times you crack a windshield, you just need to pay $30-50 for a new one.

Safelite Repair… Safelite Replace! Typically US auto insurance includes deductible-free (or reduced deductible) windshield repair/replacement cover. Rather surprised UK insurance doesn't also include similar cover. (Did you get US insurance coverage for your journey through the country?)

Windshields are a consumable item in Colorado. I've got a crack like that on each of my ("significantly" is an understatement) cheaper cars except the one I haven't driven (because it hasn't run) since moving to Colorado. Best wishes for a speedy resolution.

@@user-rl9qo1ft5z no, there are now good windshield protectors like PPF for paint. They have minimal distortion and protect from rock chips. It costs around 500-600$ in the US. It is worth it for the right cars.

I feel your pain; I bought a new 2024 GMC Sierra Denali in April. Had less than 400 miles on it, driving on an empty highway at 7am on a Saturday morning, and a truck on an overpass kicked up a rock which fell and destroyed my windshield. I was beyond pissed off.

No the ford gt did not prompt the chicanes at le mans it was the porsches and Everything else that reached 250 miles plus. They didn't get introduced till the 80s the chicanes

I know it's a bit late now, but you said in the past putting PPF on the windscreen isn't a great idea, but what about on the inside, so if it does get cracked it won't fall to bits and be such a danger.

Th🎉e cobra trunk marks were done on purpose for homologation. Suite case needed to fit in the trunk. And as it did not fit in the cobra, they forced it and it made the marks Some cobra had another kind of trunk opening also for homologation

the bbs center caps are often pop out from the wheels when you drive the car hard. it happened to me few times. i think it has something to do with the temperature that they are kinda expanding when it's hot.

I got two rock chips in my My Kia Soul GT windshield in less then 30 mins apart driving through my Louisiana from Dallas to Florida so i feel your pain. I am blessed the knicks didn't spread but cost way to much to get those fixed.

Sometimes you have to pay to play. But I would pre order windshields for all of the cars that are in the collection that maybe on back order, that way you have a spare for the future, and your already in line for the most driven cars. I’ll never understand why windshields can be so hard to get when it comes to cars like the Ford GT. There’s not a lot of Ford GT’s in the world and surely it’s not like everybody is getting windshield cracks. With less demand, the windshields should always be in stock.

This is typical in Colorado. Cracked windshields is something that you have to get use to driving in the state.
