As a carpenter for 40+ yrs, I'm always encouraged to see young guys taking to the trade with a passion. I've always cut crown nested if at all possible. This also means that any miter saw I would consider must have user friendly crown stops. The Dewalt 12" non sliders have been my go-to and have worked well for me. Your new crown stop set-up has opened up almost any saw on the market and I've recently purchased a Makita 10" XSL06 Miter Saw. I haven't used it yet but will soon. The removable aspect of the crown stop is spot on. I hated having to remove my stops once set to cut casing, base, etc. Keep up the good work.

@willissellars63045 жыл бұрын
This was awesome... Thank you, and Happy Fourth! Definitely get an inexpensive drill press, but try to get one with a deeper chuck to table depth. I have a benchtop, and it works - but sometimes putting something in that is three or four inches deep already is a problem and I have to adjust and improvise. Also, look for a machinist's punch for setting your marks in metal - it's just a spring loaded punch like a nail set, but you just push it to make the pilot mark - no hammer required. It's more expensive than you would think, (maybe $30) but having one is a great addition to your tool set. I even use mine for wood where I want extra precision. The trick to trimming bolts is to use a sacrificial nut - run a nut on past the cut point then do your cutting and grinding to pretty it up. Remove the nut and it will clean up the threads on the bolt. if the nut is boozed up, just toss it and use another. This is a way to do custom bolt lengths without having a more expensive tap an die set. - Cheers!

Kudos, This new crown stop system has enabled me to buy a new Makita sliding miter saw which, in my opinion, has a weak crown stop system. I've used the Dewalt Crown stops for many yrs and while it's not perfect, it has gotten the job done. The removable aspect of this system is also excellent when you have to jump back to casing, base, etc and then go back to crown. Thanks

Hi, Just watched your video on this jig, pretty cool. Just a thought, then using the nut to tighten down maybe use a black knob. They sell it separate at home depot in the tray section (nuts and bolt aisle). Just need to make sure the tread from the bolt fit inside the knob. Again, just a thought if you don't need it flush Also maybe two bolts spread equally on the board. This way no light wiggle. Good luck.

You can use the same rail material to make a stop track, just set it up perpendicular to the blade just behind the fence and make up a stop bar that you can swing out of the way when not in use , and when you need it swing it around to where you need it then tighten the bolt. Easy peasy! I'm sure you figured that out already though. Good job buds!👍🏻

Cutting crown nested saves time swapping the bevel and miter angles all around every time you change miter direction. Plus it always works. Laying crown flat may seem more accurate but thats more work to make cuts. I presume you made half a jig for test purposes.

Great jig, if you have trouble finding the right size bolt, use any length bolt and 2 nuts threaded down the bolt with the top of top nut at your desired length, then cut and use your grinder to get it down to your desired length. The top nut will save you starting thread.

My advice to any new carpenters, is, if you are not comfortable cutting crown mouldings laid flat on your miter saw table...practice. Learn it. I think you will like it later on. The only time I can think of when you will want to nest a piece is when you get into odd angle corners or the 22 1/2" degree cuts for the rounded sheetrock outside corners. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and learn to be proficient at laying your crown flat on your saw, and if you have to add new crown stop settings on your saw by modifying it, for some other kind of crown, it will be worth the effort. You will get consistent, uniform cuts and you won't have to make supports out 8' in either direction. If you have some bad sheetrock corners you want to follow and you believe nesting the pieces would work better, then do that, but otherwise just learn to lay your crown flat. The company I work for wants our crown to be straight, with right angle corners as much as possible, and they will require the sheetrock people to float things out to make it right. We will hold our crown away in those situations, and they will float to our crown.
