I would be willing to bet the welds hold good. I have done quite a lot of Years welding professionally on a tig. The look good to me. I am pretty sure it will be ok unless you get in a high speed accident and hit it just right but it will most likely hold. its boxed that is stronger than factory.

When you weld vertically move your puddle in the shape of a triangle with the point at the top. Start at the bottom and work up. Drop your heat a bit. Stop every time the triangle is made. It will look like a stack of coins when you get done and you'll get good penetration. Not hating.

Those are some pretty good welds Craig. Don't let people drag you down about what you accomplish. I love your content and think this project is epic. I'm eager to watch each video. Hey man I’m Texas combo welder, I can weld anything anywhere. Don’t sweat about your welds they look good man no doubt about that and there’s only one trick to welding just practice and mess with how many amps or temp and the wire speed if using a wire feed machine! It’s all about finding your personal preference!

So as a welder I’m not gonna talk crap I think it looks good. But where I was concerned was the plates for boxing in the notch should be beveled so the weld penetrates good and isn’t just sitting on the surface. But hey man welding takes practice and you’re out there doing it .

I have a stupid question but I have the whole welding thing down, but do I need the argon gas tank? What is the purpose for the tank? Is it recommended to even weld a frame without the argon gas tank?

@@notthatfast3318 it's an argon mixture. And yea if your welding a frame it's a good idea. But if your asking that question you may not be ready to weld a frame...

As long as your penetration is good who cares what it looks like. I’ve seen welds that make cat turds look good but because they had good penetration they where stronger than a beautiful stack of dimes that didn’t penetrate as well. Good looking strong welds come with practice so keep doing what you’re doing.

Always bevel your plates for welding and try to keep welding uphand on the vertical for strength. Your welds look decent and will hold up. Just an idea why not run a tube through the holes connecting the step notches instead of putting another on the surface.

Who's truck is it? Last I heard was Craig owned it and it is his to scrap if he wanted to. Grinders make it all look just like it came that way... on that note, I would run the notches through the bed and leave as much flat surface as I could. Its over kill to run the pipe across the bed surface and it would be unieck to that truck and perfect for still sliding stuff in the bed. It is going to be a while before you have it all back together. I think in all fairness, I would of bought a frame to modify keeping your toy as a roller as long as possible. That is me and I don't have short pockets or dog in the fight. Nope I don't have any pockets as I am so crippled that if I started today in a shop with every toy in the world at my command. I still keep my head in the game. Now paint won't pull a plow but if you go somewhere you are not wearing a pair of pants that will stand on their own either. So at a piece here and there, I might get half of it done in a year even with brand new everything.I used to weld in ship yards and we had some inspections that could take the joy out of living. Now if it were my design I would do it different so what can I say. Nothing .... No dog, no fight. Good times ahead

Only thing i have to say is that prep is key, you could be using a piece of shit harbor freight welder or a Lincoln but if you dont prep the metal (grind rust off) then youll be good, other than that your welds look good and if they crack then just prep better and weld them back up, we all started from somewhere , keep up the great work bud your doing great

When you are welding, anytime you can avoid a butt joint you should. Setting up a corner joint will be easier to weld, look better and be stronger in most cases.

I agree that trigger welding is not a good technique. It does produce a decent "stack of dimes" imitation tig weld that is very popular these days but allowing the puddle to cool every 1/4 inch is not making the strongest weld. However, I can see that you are getting enough penetration that I seriously doubt you will break it using the truck the way you will be. If this was an off road racing truck or something that was going to really get abused, I might be concerned. I think you might be actually doing a disservice to the project by using heavy material like 3/16. I say that because it's probably at the outer limits of what your welder can penetrate and 1/8" would be plenty strong enough for your application, particularly after it's all boxed. The frame you're welding to is nowhere near that thick and it's held up for 50 years. Edit to add. Good choice on not attempting to fill that 1/2 inch gap with weld. that would be a complete waste of time and welding wire. It's definitely worth the time to fit your parts up correctly and to clean the mill scale and rust off before welding. A quick wipe with Acetone is also a good idea. Don't use brake clean!!!...it will produce a poisonous gas when burned that can do serious/potentially deadly damage to you if inhaled. Great job on your projects. Your videos are enjoyable to watch. Anyone ever tell you you look kinda like Josh Homme?

i just know wielding to a frame is never good but just keep an eye on it after off road with it so far i got 2 rigs for free from pro shop builds were they wielded to the frame and it broke to sh to the point the frame was junk i built one and bolted everything to it and used heavy bolts and use the roll bar and bolted it to the frame for extra support built mounts that were wielded to a plate then bolt it to the frame the cut out make it heavy the bolt both frames to it i used 6 i/2 in. bolts what u did will last just not too long and the more u fix it the more it cracks best way is to build from scratch build ur own frame but it depends on how u drive it if u leave the ground or not most frames are design to flex and were u wield it it can't flex so it cracks right next to the wield just keep a close eye on it very impotent most people only do this to pavement pounder for low riders
