Exactly! I'll cut all sorts of stuff but not opal! Stress factor is too high! I guess you get used to it as you cut more, but helluva learning curve!

Great to hear you talk about the options but still put the stones first. I also see why you don't often cut other people's opal. You do the right thing by the stone and if it does not work out but the owner may or may not understand. Justin - I've started watching your videos while I have been off work due to the COVID outbreak. I have really enjoyed watching your video's. I've learnt so much about a subject I knew nothing about and have really gained a great interest in Opel stones & the way they are cut and polished. I had no idea there were so many types there were and how difficult it can be to "revel" the stone itself. Your commentary on your videos is really interesting and I like the way you pass on your knowledge. I watched one really interesting video of yours with you explaining the story behind some of the stones in your private collection, you had some amazing gems and loved hearing the story behind the various stones you have. I love watching you cut, grind and polish opals. I’ve learned so much! I own 2 gorgeous opals, one is a large tear drop (pendant) and a smaller oval (ring). I’ve had both since 1974 and absolutely love them. After watching you contemplate and map out how to cut them...how the color bars run, I’ve learned that opals truly are a mysterious stone. Is there such a thing as having two sided stone. That large one looks like it would polish out sweet on both sides and a band style mound for a pendant. If so, is it more valuable?

I don't know about value, but you can make pendant bezels/settings that allow for both sides of the stone to be seen if you flip the pendant. I've made a couple of silver ones that are double-sided to show off both sides of a stone. Honestly that large 15c one could still make a fantastic double-sided pendant even with the inclusions on the back side.
