Works both ways. The things they told you as a kid, you remember & remember they're right....but they start being human (fallible). You realize that they don't/didn't know EVERYTHING. That being said, my father is my rock. I will always love/respect him.....but he does sh*t that annoys the piss out of me. Love ya, Dad!

My father was so stupid, often giving me useless advice: don’t drink so much, don’t spend all of your money, get up early, blah, blah, blah. I remember vividly a couple weeks after my 25th birthday he gave me advice that was very helpful. Thank goodness he wised up as I got older!

Rob... I'm 54 and you have me crying like a baby.. for what you're going through.. and my father was in hospice care.. about the same as your father.. lung wise.. my father was my hero also. I'm going to quote him as he said about his father.. " my dad was the smartest man I ever knew, I wish I would have listened more ".. but all that said my dad lived in Chattanooga.. I live in Trimble Tennessee ( at the boot heal of Missouri) 400 miles away.. he went home from the hospital. I walked away from job house everything. Loaded the car with clothes personal stuff and 10 chihuahua's ( story for another day).. I didn't know when or if I would return.. luckily I have a great boss.. I was there from Thanksgiving 18 till last of January 19.. he passed away January 6 19.. me and my little brother were by his side.. funny story. Hospice nurse didn't know who I was. A nurse had gave him morphine the day before to ease his pain.. he actually slept that night.. next day a new nurse had came by and was going give him more morphine.. he said "I don't want any,,, I have seen to many people get hooked on in and ruin ther lives " of course I started laughing. As he would have also.. told him " take the shit .. your not gonna be around long enough to get hooked on it" the new nurse looked at him and told him " I can get him removed if you feel unsafe " he replied that is my son.. he's ok... this is the first time I have ever told anyone about this.. brother it's hard... it does get easier.. kinda. Always be little things pop up. Love ya man keep your head up.. take care of your mother. And smile

I don't think it gets easier, not for me anyway. What I've found is that I have gotten better at dealing with the pain- telling stories, sharing my story with others. My mom was in hospice, we were going to see her "one last time" and we got "the call". We missed her by a few minutes. I was "gutted" until I saw the look of absolute peace on her face. Most days that's enough. Other days, not so much, but as Rabbit says "that's a story for another time".

@@edthompson6131 I lost my sister in 2016. People say you get over it, and that time is a great healer. They're wrong, you just get used to it, that's all. Truth is a little bit of you dies with them, a part of yourself you can never get back. Hold on to the good memories though, and let the bad stuff go. Helps me anyway, and knowing that she's in a better place. I still feel her around me sometimes; seeing her initials on a licence plate, the scent of a woman wearing the same perfume she always wore, hearing her favourite song on the radio, it all helps me know that she'll always be around me in spirit. You're mum will be around you too. Her spirit will always be in your heart.

RIP to the ones we lose, and sometimes too soon that we love and admire for being in our lives. I been watching you and I can totally relate to your loss,it strikes a cord. My grandfather,as a child I spent many of days with him, going for rides in his Cadillac and just be around, having dinner, going out and having a good time. He worked on cars most of his life,he did body repair and finish, leaded cars, painted them, had amazing talent to fix a car in a small amount of time and the owner would come back not believing it was the same car that rolled into the shop. He didn't always wear a mask,he smoked filter-less cigarettes to the end of his days. I loved him and I came to see him in the hospital thinking he would kick it but I watched him leave the earth, the man I loved, the man I admired, who made me laugh,I was 16, and he was 80. Born in the early 20's,he had to teach himself everything he knew and worked hard to support his family,he was a very good body man. It was the early 2000's when I lost him and I never regret the time I spent with him,I regret not growing older with him and be able to learn more from him because he was a very talented man, when it came to fixing up automobiles. If it didn't hit you then,it will some day and you then realize how special some people are that come into your life for a reason. Lots of great memories of Grandpa to be shared and cherished for a lifetime.

My response was," Hey at least our girls will always remember going to see 'Ford vs. Ferrari' in a Shelby." 3 months later the daughter and I raced across the country in that car. She has a picture of Rob & I standing next to the car laughing because she corrected my top speed (I had to estimate because I don't look down at speed). I lost my mom and dad 11 days apart in 2017. It’s been 3.5 years. But the loss doesn’t really get any easier. The best thing you can do is keep his memory alive. My son was 2 when he passed. My best way to cope with the loss is to raise my son like he raised me. A love of the outdoors, sports, and cars. My old man loved classic cars. He had GTO’s, Impala’s and Galaxy’s before I was born. He never went to car shows and cruises with me and my friends when we were younger because it tormented him not to be able to afford a car worthy to be there. I started helping work on his 76 highboy when I was 4 handing him tools. He sold it in 94 when I was 12 when we couldn’t find parts anymore, and before it was easy enough to go on eBay click, order, and wait for it to show up. Old man got cancer in ‘13 and fought hard til 2017. He was in a rehab home for a lot of his last 9months on earth. There was a weekly car cruise across the street. My little boy and I would go down and wheel him across the street and we would spend a few hours every Sunday checking out every car there. A guy who has since passed himself from Rona offered him to take his 68 goat for a ride, the old man couldn’t work the clutch anymore, so he accepted shotgun. Those Sundays, the cars, the good people, and the deeper bonding between him and his grandson kept him going for a few extra months. The last cruise of the year he asked my boy if he wanted an old car. When he said yes. My dad stared a hole in me and said you make sure he gets one someday. He passed day before Thanksgiving, 3 days before rifle season opened. He had no money, a lot of debt, and just enough insurance to pay for the funeral. It took me almost a year. But I picked up a 66 impala base 283 convertible. My dads first car, a 66 impala 283 convertible himself, but his was an ss. My son just turned 6. All he wants to do is play baseball, work on the car, and go for a ride in it. I’m carrying on traditions, and doing what the old man would want me to do. Carry on yourself like he would want you to. That’s the absolute best therapy you can do for yourself. Every once in a while say to yourself “he would love this” you may break down a little, but it definitely helps in the long run. Take it from someone who has been in your shoes before.

I lost my Dad in '91, and Mom in '06. Both waited until I left, after staying up the day before with my Dad and I stayed up all night with my mom. With both, I left and I was getting a call to go back to the house for my Dad, and hospital for my Mom. My wife, who is a geriatric Social Worker and who deals with her residents passing, told me "They didn't want you to see the worst." I'm a year younger than your father. Rob, you're a great person because of your father. The best to his memories, to you and your Mom.

That was an awesome tribute to your dad! He did a great job teaching you real values instead of just buying and selling cars.

My heart break you Rob. My Dad's been gone almost 20 years and I miss him every day he was my hero too. Came from nothing, joined the Army at 14 right in the middle of WW2 and LOVED for the family it became. Went to Japan as part of the Occupation and learn to love the people there. Met my mom and with her finally got a REAL family who loved and supported him. He was ten foot tall and kicked my ass to get thru college and love learning. I miss him. Your going to miss him your dad every for the rest of your life and that's a good thing. :)

F##k Rob. My father passed on last December. He inspired me, but he wasn't my hero. He and didn't get to have any sort of a relationship until I was almost 40. So he wasn't really a part of my life growing up, but I still loved him. This story brought me back to taking a guitar into his room and sitting with him. Just playing and singing for him. Just helping him through it. I spent his last 3 days on earth with him. When the nursing home called me, I was prepared, but I still miss him tons. I miss his terrible jokes and off key singing. His toothless smile from ear to ear. The way approached life was so joyful. Like you, he never had any other kids besides me. Being that my mom and him divorced when I was about 2, I never really got to know him until my late 30s. I can say I feel robbed of all the time before that, but perhaps I might appreciate the time we did get together after that as much. I love the video he for you too. I can tell that he was a great guy.

Rabbit, this made me think of my recently passed Grandad (last year). Was a mechanic, same as your dad, painting, grinding all that no mask no nothing. The man was in rough shape for decades, and he could just keep going. The best man I have ever know. When my mom told me he was in hospital on oxygen, I knew that was it, because I thought of all of that, just like you did. I couldnt handle it, I couldnt believe the man who went through what he did was gone. Im glad you saw him before he passed, that is so important, I wish I had that chance, but he was in the UK so thats how life goes sometimes. I hope you're doing alright my dude, I have it on my bucketlist to go to Barrett Jackson one of these years, and I hope to meet you there. Stay Strong Brother, we all love you.

He's always going to be by your side, no doubt in my mind, because he instilled the values handed down to him from his Dad to you. Time does make it better, but I still wish I could see my parents, and they've been gone almost 30 years now. But I do know when I succeed at things that life throws at me, I know that they're proud that I fought through, and it's because what they instilled in me, and your Dad instilled in you, you're going to be fine, just give it time brother.

I lost my dad at 22. He was 61 and had a ton of health issues all the way from smoking to asbestosis, COPD, and a car accident that left him permanently disabled and dependent on morphine pills until the day he died. I’ll be 30 this year and have learned so much ever since he passed. I wish he could see me now. Quit smoking while you still can Rob. It takes way too many good people.
