Any form of art which requires you to subtract material away in order to reach the final piece is extremely respectable in my opinion, one mistake and it's finished, you're starting over. The amount of patience you must have to do that kind of work is astonishing. The wand you made was incredible and I'm sure she adores it!!

@paralogia8 жыл бұрын
Why start with such a big piece of timber for such a small object? You could have made four wands out of the piece of wood.
@supermonkee488 жыл бұрын
You are correct that a smaller blank would have worked. However, my chuck doesn't grip much smaller than that. I do intend to get a set of small jaws eventually for that very reason.
@paralogia8 жыл бұрын
Sounds reasonable. Why not just do it between centers? I make spurtles and wands from time to time from 1"x1"x14" pieces and it never occurred to me to chuck them up. Is there an advantage for chatter?
@supermonkee488 жыл бұрын
Between centers is certainly an option. I prefer the jaws because I feel like I have more control over the piece, especially when it starts to get thin. It's mostly a personal preference.
@paralogia8 жыл бұрын
I tried it your way the other day out of curiosity and ended up breaking it as it got thin. Go figure. Whatever works for best is what you use.

**If you watch at .25 speed it's almost at normal speed, so I'd say it took him an 45 minutes to an hour, but for a novice it'd take about 2 if you don't want to ruin it.** *As for materials you'd need:* -a turning blank(I recommend a 1 1/2"X1 1/2"X12" spindle blank) -paints -tongue oil/beeswax/other sealer -high grit sandpaper. *For tools you're going to need:* -borrow/rent a lathe and lathe chisels (lathes are not only big but a good lathe and chisels can be VERY expensive) -an etcher(although a dremel can be substituted, but they are a bit big) -eye protection, apron, and a painter's mask (if you plan on using wood such as purple heart which is highly toxic) -a guide to show you how to work the lathe without hurting yourself or the wood
