Deal-breaker for me: underage members. If a group has members under the age of 16, it is a hard no for me. I seriously do not think it is right to put anyone that young into the high-pressure environment of bring a debuted idol. If there are members aged 16-17 - I may be a bit more flexible but would still have serious reservations about a group. Obviously there isn't a magic switch that flips on your 18th birthday (or any arbitrary date) but the older someone is the more likely that they truly understand what they are getting into.

i was gonna say the same thing! honestly at this point i don't have much tolerance for idols under 17. there's getting to be a Lot of idols much younger than that and it's kind of disturbing. don't know if anyone else has been paying attention to the lapillus member announcements but they have a 2008 liner in there!!! she's THIRTEEN YEARS OLD!! that is WAY too young to be entering the kpop industry and i'm both concerned for her and really sus of MLD entertainment for this one. it's so bad

My dealbreaker is constant/major member lineup changes or hiatuses, especially if the agency doesn’t communicate what’s happening. It feels very sketchy and like there’s something going on behind the scenes… also why would I put so much effort into stanning a member if they could just disappear in a month? It’s why I can’t stan Momoland or get interested in Blackswan (that and the racism…), and COINCIDENTALLY both those groups are horrifically mismanaged I stan brave girls despite their past lineup changes but BG is its own genre of group

You don't have to spend money on physical albums though. Not everyone has money to spend like that. I've been a multistan for 5 years now and not once have I ever bought merchandise. Just streaming the music and content is enough. Also you shouldn't judge groups based on title tracks alone. I've found that more often than not, hidden gems lie within the b-sides. Lyrics may become more personal therefore relatable as most times idols themselves take part in writing and composing. Always keep an open mind and you don't have to spend excessive amounts of money to show that you're a fan.

Fandoms sometimes make me hesitant to call myself a stan, because then everyone will assume that I'm part of the fandom. Like, for me personally that's kinda my situation with Stray Kids. The whole Woojin situation made me so damn mad and disgusted and I can't believe that there are still some fans that actually believe the rumors until now. Stray Kids are the group I currently listen to the most and also consume the most content of, but I'm still hesitant to call myself a Stay

Yeah. Understable. I have not been a stay since their predebut, but I heard of stories that made some Stays too protective with the kids. Not just Woojin's situation. It had probably peaked at that time, and Kingdom. I think now, Stays, with regards to Woojin, some would react too much nonsense when he's being associated with the kids. I guess some type of territorial-ish. But yeah, I haven't seen any Stays start unnecessary drag with Woojin since the issue was proven false. Just the "he's not in the group anymore" antics. You are very welcome in the fandom if you decide on being one. (For me, it took a lot of blocking, muting on twt to make the tl clear with no toxicity 😭)

I don't stan nugu groups because I can't deal with the disappointment of watching them disband. They will disband. Usually before 5 years. I've been into kpop since 2008 and I have seen countless nugu groups come out with 2 or 3 bangers and then disband because they don't have the funds to continue. Yall ever heard of Sunny Hill? Fat Cat? GP Basic? Tiny-G? MyB? Led Apple? Probably not because all of these artists never made it big and I feel like I'm one of the only people who remember their music show performances and their (at the time) amazing MVs. I'm so glad that more international kpop stans are into nugu groups but I can't do the same. I only started stanning Seventeen in 2016 because they showed potential. After 2 comebacks I knew that they would last despite coming from a dying company. I don't want to always be anxious whenever I go into their cafe and wonder "Is there going to be a notice of a disbandment?"

Theres so much pressure for companies to use the members self written songs bc fans are constantly yelling to let them write their own songs.. but most idols are not good enough as songwriters. They just simply dont have the training or creativity, but i guess its more on the company for not giving them enough training in that area if they want the group to release self written music Plus: so many ppl use the “my bias group writes their own music so they are superior” card which is just weird.. and i could also see it from the angle that the sentiment leans into misogyny in kpop as most ggs are never allowed to get involved in their music. but theres a growing amount of bg members who are allowed to write stuff (ex: yg never credits bp or 2ne1 but all of their bgs are heavily involved/credited) so theres ppl who put self written music on a pedestal and will not even bother to check out ggs bc of it, even tho the kpop industry lobbies against ggs creative freedom

this is one of my issues with kpop in general as i’ve gotten older, no disrespect to the idols themselves but it just seems like any existing 4th gen kpop song could be fully interchangeable with another group, and it would be nice to have more cohesive discographies and not just consistent visuals

Same. I would much rather prefer a longer, fleshed out album (and maybe a single or two) once a year than a couple singles or EPs. There's a few reasons for this, but a big thing is that It would give the artists proper time to rest between comebacks to properly prepare themselves for a big release, and a single or two yearly won't require nearly the budget or effort a full album takes. The fans get fed and are happy, it gives them time for personal time with family, as well as time for personal goals and other idol related content to promote themselves. It's also a financial thing, because I tend to buy albums I really like. But I only have a few singles, simply for the fact I'd rather get an album that lasts longer than like, 6 minutes... I can get by and accept an EP if there's no skips, but a single is just NOT cutting it if that's all they're putting out.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again but unstanning or choosing not to stan a group because of the fandom is COMPLETELY VALID. If you are a stan of a group you are part of the fandom and actively interacting with them and I don’t want to be part of a fandom I don’t like. I’m not going to stan a group if I can’t participate in being a stan. A lot of people act like you’re an anti if you use this logic because you can’t “look past the fandom and just enjoy the music” but I do do that it’s just that I casually listen to and enjoy them instead of stanning

Well personally I don’t really have a “limit”, if that makes sense, but I feel like for the case of some fandoms your lost if you don’t understand some jokes or some like inside fandom talk (yk the kinds) that you will know from older videos and content. But it’s a problem when there’s too much of it. So I think the proper amount might be something like a “TV” that groups do sometimes when they are promoting, vlog to get to know them, their own variety series, and maybe a behind the scenes series. Personally, I think an (example) of a group that does not too much and not too little of content is Treasure. my definition of stanning a group is that I like all their music and like the group as a whole. Its true that a toxic fandom can really ruin things but for one of the groups I like that happened and i just didn't use twitter anymore and it solved that problem. I think putting some distance from the fandom helped because for me personally fandom discussions etc are secondary to the music and performances...therefore I could honestly just not have any of the social media aspect and be okay and still stan a group. With this definition though, I literally only stan two groups and the rest of the kpop groups I listen to I would say that I'm a casual listener

I have to say the fandom thing is the point why I don't call myself a stan of any group. There are groups I definitely listen to the most and I wholeheartedly wish them the best but I do not engage actively in any fan activities. I buy the album if I like it, I watch content about them, and sometimes comment on the youtube channels that support them but that's mostly because I like the channel. I also visited 3 concerts because Kpop artists do not often come to my country and I have one friend who listens to Kpop in real life. Most of my friends don't even know that I like it. It is just because I made in every fandom I participated in (which I also did very rarely) uncomfortable experiences without being really that much engaged. It wasn't really any attacks against me but comments, fights, and drama that was so unnecessary and made me want to stop listening to Kpop. Now I treat Kpop artists mostly like other music artists I listen to and try to just enjoy it instead of getting too involved.

For me, the group has to be around my age or older for me to really be invested in them, and I'm not that young anymore, so the times for me to stan a group properly are coming to an end lol. The younger groups are of course producing good music, but in order for me to call myself their fan, I need to relate to them on a more personal level too, and teenagers can't really provide that feeling for me anymore. But even bigger of a deal-breaker is if a group starts acting all high and mighty because of their popularity. I do like groups getting popular and well-loved, but very often the biggest groups end up kind of... losing their authentic, humane side and swapping all their lyrics and performance styles and general energy with "I'm at the top, suck my **** now you losers." Like one "diss" track here and there is fine, as all groups tend to produce at least one of those, but if it feels like this is all they do now, it turns me off big time.

Yuju has great vocals and she could become alot better but she's the only good vocalist. SinB, Yuju and Yerin are decent dancers but that's it. They can sing-talk (Love Bug, Life is a Party, Bop! Bop!). They also don't really have much stage presence. I think it's obvious that they have a close bond and train together which makes them so in sync. It's just sad that their shitty ex-company source music didn't train them properly. #5 GFRIEND is disbanded but they are active. They actively interact with each other (they sang Me Gustas Tu at one of their stylists wedding together, like eachothers instagram posts, promote eachother on instagram etc). SinB has also hinted at an OT6 comeback at 2023.

She'll definetely get alot better in future

I don’t think it’s the company’s fault anymore that they’re untrained. It’s clear that before disbandment HYBE put in a lot of money and resources into GFRIEND. They have all redebuted now with differing concepts, and it is their responsibility to train themselves. Even as GFRIEND in their later years, the company would not sign them up for dance and singing classes...

Honestly, one of the biggest deal breaker today is debuting minors in a group. Like they should be studying and enjoying their youth instead of working in this cruel and competitive industry. Also one thing that I add is that it restricts the groups from doing other things such as performing mature concepts because they need to consider the minor members, which kills the fun for the fans and idols themselves. It is really hard to stan 4th gen groups because of this.

I'm with you on a lot of this. For me the most important ones are: 1. Fandom: there are a few groups that I've completely written off because I don't want to be associated with that level of toxicity. 2. Title tracks: if you don't like the TT why bother listening to the rest? 3. Members: if there's even one that I dislike (petty reasons or not) than is a no for me. 4. Live singing: if they don't/can't sing live why bother? I don't want/need perfect vocals, just live with imperfections and all. But in reality I didn't really choose my stan groups. One day I just fell down the rabbit hole for each of them. Never planned, it just happened...

Underage members in a group, especially if they are the majority and/or some are under 16. In a large members groups having one or two underage with everyone else being adults I can kind of understand. But recent groups are pushing the limits, debuting children left and right. Some may not agree, but I won't support pedophilia, child labour and taking avantage of minors. Like you won't tell me their fandoms is only around their age, or that they have the experience to put their boundaries as a person. Teenagers should be able to figure themselves out away from the public, make mistakes and be imperfect. Yeah, kpop is concerning me nowadays and I recently decided I won't check a group music before checking a group age range.

I agree with regard to annoying fandoms. I commented that I didn’t like a recent comeback song from a certain group and was told to never listen to any of their music again because the group didn’t need me. It was weird because I don’t even love every single song from my ult group and I’m pretty sure it’s okay to not like a song. I also agree with stanning an inactive group. There are some 2nd and 3rd gen groups whose music I love and have on my playlist but I haven’t really bothered to learn every members name and everything about them like I do my current ult groups.

I stan groups depending on the music, the concept and the members I think? I'll keep up with a group if the music is nice, if the members are lovely, but if your concept doesn't appeal to me I won't be huge stan. If the concept is right up my alley, I'm already done for. Take Itzy's concept, I think it's basically perfect to appeal to many. More specific concepts like Pirates or Vampire must find their niche of fans. Finding your niche in a group is the most satisfying thing! So you either bet on having a wide appeal or a specific one. Like DreamCatcher and Rock/horror. It can't please everyone but that's fine, and it justify building your own fanbase.

- If they don’t put subtitles on their member content videos. I just can’t connect with them all way if I can’t understand them - if all the vocalists are weak. I love dancing but 4th gen really threw the vocal position out the door. Even some main vocals aren’t as good as I think they should be, especially compared to some 3rd and many 2nd gen groups. - if the members seem really awkward and fake around each other. The groups that really get along make it so much easier for me to connect with them, and when a group doesn’t feel connected with each other it makes me feel awkward - if all the stage presence is bad. I don’t want to watch people dancing with low energy and blank stares

The main thing for me is how good their title tracks are and if they keep me entertained. This is why Red Velvet are my ultimate group. I love all of their title tracks (yes, including "Rookie" and "Psycho") and their constant concept switching keeps me from feeling bored of what they release. After that is when I'll actually learn about the members. I don't get into groups because "they have amazing stage presence" or "the quality of their music videos is so high" or "they're all so attractive". And to the people who are always telling me that I need to check out a group's B-sides... do you really think that I'm going to waste my time listening to B-sides if I don't like the title tracks? Title tracks and other promoted singles are supposed to make you want to listen to an artist. If they're just not doing it for me, then I'm not going to bother. Music production and marketing are very important to me. So, I'm not going to reward artists for not doing well in either or both departments. I'll also touch upon the disbanded/inactive group part. As a mashup artist, I need to listen to every single released during a year to determine what I want to include in my year end. I rarely listen to music from past years. And I definitely don't have the time to back track through someone's discography unless I'm truly blown away by their music. So, unless they're currently making music and I'm enjoying it, then I'm not going to be taking a trip down memory lane and playing catch up to see what I missed.

i feel like kpop stans have such a weird thing about title tracks vs b-sides but at the end of the day they’re both… songs. songs with the same voices. songs produced for that group, potentially by the same person as the title track. i feel like if the bsides on an album are AMAZING but the title track sucks, everyone now disregards the whole album but it’s like babe you know you can skip the songs you don’t like. i feel like y’all feel some weird pressure to have the title track automatically be your favorite song on an album. plus i feel like bsides more often include the members on the credits like as lyricists than they would on the title, so it actually helps show the groups color MORE

I usually don't let the fact that a group isn't very active or disbanded stop me, but sometimes I will be a casual listener more than anything. Not vibing with one or several members doesn't always stop me, but sometimes it does mean I'll never be more than a casual listener. Other than that I do agree with everything you said. I hadn't really thought about these kind of deal-breakers at first but now I do and I also think I have a few. I'll mention two additional deal-breakers for me because why not I guess. Temporary groups Now I've gone against this twice with 1The9 and UNB but other than that I just can't get myself to stan a temporary group. The reason why is simply because I get really sad when groups disband, even if I know it's going to happen. I can still be a casual listener, but investing a lot of time in a group I know isn't going to last very long is just too much for me. None of the vocalists are good Now I'm not an expert on vocal techniques or anything, but I'd still like to say that I can tell whether someone is good at singing or not. I can kind of look past no good rappers (sometimes), but no good vocalists? absolutely not. Not all vocalists have to be ridiculously good at singing like Ailee but if none of the singing sounds good at all, I'm out. Doesn't matter if the instrumentals and lyrics are perfection to me, if the singing sounds bad to me that's enough to not stan or even listen to the group at all. I haven't come across many groups with no good vocalists but it has happened at least once (won't mention names because I don't want to potentially start a fight).

This is just personal preference I think 3: the current trend of prioritizing dancing / performance over vocals..

My deal breaker honestly is a lack of non music content. With the groups Im a fan of like SVT, Enhyphen, Straykids- they all have a significant amount of content for me to go into. Especially Seventeen, which I LOVE about them. But then with other groups, when you hardly see them offstage, it feels insanely disconnected for me. Also with the toxic fandom thing, honestly I'll be a fan of groups- but I wont associate with the fandom as much depending on the group. Like, Stays I want and have nothing to do with. Carats? Sure theyre lovely ill reply on twitter sometimes. That sorta thing.

As someone who doesn't stan groups but more or less has a bunch of favourite groups that i listen to and watch variety content of, my biggest deal breaker would have to be the group not being able to sing their own songs live. Its a common excuse of "oh but they're singing and dancing, which is difficult to do" but fact of the matter is, these groups are releasings songs that are there to be sung, if the idol group can't sing their own song live, why should i follow this group? Sure its great to see cool choreographies, but one must realise that these people are singers first and foremost, dancing is just an aesthetic piece to the music.

For me one big dealbreaker is if the company isn't trustworthy. It's happened 2 times now in only the past year that I stanned a rookie group, but within one year of debut they lost members or disbanded with no reason, and then I look at the company only to find out that this has been a pattern with pervious groups they managed as well. Take Hot Issue, they were a great group, had a good debut mini album, relatively good 1st comeback, they fit their concept and had a cool name and stuff. Within one year they're inactive for a short period of time when the company puts out a statement where they basically say they disbanded them but with no clear reason why. Turns out S2 was a new company with no experience whatsoever with managing idols. Or Ghost9, where 2 members just left without a clear reason, never to be seen again, the company they are under has a history of failing their idols and weird disbandments, so I'm just hoping for the remaining 7 to be able to stay as a group. Another thing I look at is wether their 1st comeback, or the comebacks they have, are better or at least on the same level as their debut. And wether they only put out a single every now and then or if they actually release albums and mini-albums with good quality songs as well. And finally I look at the other content they have; do the members seem to have fun with what they're doing? does it look like they get along? do they individually seem like cool people?

Obviously music quality comes first, but I have such a hard time getting into groups who have just made their debut or who have small discographies because I get SO bored of listening to the same stuff over and over. Agree so much with no.2 - and this is one reason why I don't really engage with too much content. Like, I'll watch videos and leave likes, maybe stream some stuff as/when I can and buy albums/some merch. But I'm usually hesitant to leave comments or even read some. I guess this is why I kinda think of myself as an overall casual multi-stan and despite me lacking interactions with others, I think I'm ok like this XD The other thing for me is, and not sure if it's for anyone else, but I don't want to get into a group just because they're super popular or have a huge fan base. As in, I want to like them because it's them, if that makes sense (whether it's music, the members, their choreography, a combination, etc). I'm not sure if anyone else has had this, but sometimes it feels like there is a weird form of an almost pseudo-"peer pressure" involved to like a group even if I may not be into them/their music.

A few of these imo are really avoidable. For me if the title track shit then I just don’t listen to it. The fandom one, again imo, is not that big of a deal. I just don’t interact with the fandom simple. I can still support to my favorite groups without needing to interact with with fandom at all and so can other people. I know some people love the interaction with different stan’s of their fav group and that’s totally understandable but for me it’s not necessary for me to call myself a stan. In reality, a lot of idols/groups these days caNOT control their fans and especially with the companies being incredibly strict they cannot really speak about certain things. Again these are my opinions, I’m not shaming anybody for thinking otherwise! If you disagree please tell me in the replies and if I said something confusing (which I probably did😭) tell me so I can clarify!
