I did something like this last year, combine HL2 Update and MMod, along with a bunch of HD texture mods and HD model imports from Half-Life Alyx. It was an absolute blast to play and felt like an official HL2 remaster.

Though, i had to repalce songs manually since Batman score doesn't fit well here (sometimes it works well, sometimes it's absolute miss, + game loses it's indentity in favor of Hollywood blockbuster)

I played MMod a bunch on launch so much so i got tired of it and went back to playing the game vanilla, i really got to appreciate how the vanilla game feels it may not be as satisfing as HL1 but HL2 just has this sense of polish i hadnt detected prior to mmod's release in a way i love mmod for that

You should totally try the upscaled texture mod too, it really makes a big difference! I can't stop zooming in to random things and fawning over how crispy everything looks. It's compatible with MMod too.

This is actually my preferred way to play the game too! Although sometimes I like to go back to vanilla just to experience the game the way it was intended. I plan on buying a retail copy of the game so I can play it how it was on launch.

I found out you could play HL2VR with the Beta Aesthetics 3.0 mod. I’d say that’s probably my favourite way to play HL2. Now you can FEEL dark and gritty. Also, congrats on three years!

i also love the mod that changes the hev suit to the one seen in alex, that including the new weapon models makes it feel like a 2023 game to me, dont get me wrong the original is amazing but all these mods together are more fun to me on repeat playthroughs

@@smailchali5102 Not really, it's really boring while all the weapons feel to generic to use. Compared to HL1 where every weapon had an alt fire and were experimental so it could be as crazy as it wanted due to the setting while HL2 feels like a big downgrade where only some have alt fire and enemy AI feel dumbed down so nothing feels like a challenge or even rewarding. Gravity Gun and Ravenholm is the only good part of HL2s combat imo but before and after it, really isn't fun.

Combat was never the best part of the Half Life games. It's the level design and the unbroken narrative that makes the Half Life series so great.

A player can enjoy a good story and good level design for how long? 2 to 3 playthroughs? After that, you are only going to replay the game if you truly enjoy its gameplay

Yeah, I can’t go back to Vanilla after playing MMOD. A really good balance of innovation and aesthetic cohesion. Honestly i’d recommend of your starting half life id go BLACK MESA - HL2 MMOD - Entropy Zero and then 2. It would probably be the most cohesive experience you could get.

ehhhhhhh, I wouldn't say that's cohesive, because Black Mesa is very different to Half Life 2 in terms of design. It definitely could be a cool Marathon to do when you're a fan, but you wouldn't appreciate the games as much without the original experience.

I would advise against playing HL2 Update or even recommend it! I had, when I wanted to play through HL2 with this mod, a reproducible crash of the game. Always at the same point. If such a serious bug has not been fixed in an 8-year-old mod, it allows conclusions to be drawn about how well the project is still maintained. Apart from that, the graphical / technical improvements are way too subtle even for 2015 and out of date since the early 2020s at the latest. I would, if you want to play exclusively with a refurbished version released and distributed by Valve, wait for the release of HL2: Remastered Collection. Whereby, it is unclear when this remaster will be released and what it will even offer. However, that's not a project I'm insanely looking forward to seeing released. Unlike the No VR mod for Half-Life: Alyx. Because finally playing something new and technically / graphically much more appealing in the HL universe, than HL2 over and over again, seems much more attractive to me! In the past, mods based on the HL2 engine satisfied my "hunger for more". Mods like Minerva, Research & Development or Entropy: Zero. But on the one hand, there are hardly any mod projects of this kind left, and on the other hand, you can see that even these projects are getting more and more technically dusty.

Edit: (Putting this edit here as the below is just a story of how I got into Source): Garry's Mod has a mod that cranks Combine AI to the roof (called realistic combine AI, or close to it). It was made so that the Combine can match up with popular weapon bases like ARC9(and ARCCW), CW 2, TFA, M9K etc. So with vanilla weapons they are brutally dangerous. Sadly one thing I haven't seen done is make their reaction to grenades better. They always stand around for a second, enough to eventually get blown up. Which blame for could be forwarded to Valve not wanting to make their game too difficult. The story aka original comment: Most played game I have on Steam is Garry's Mod. Over 4000 hours and I'm really looking forward to that stupid 1 year achievement. It's the first game I have on my account (though when I was a kid we had a shared account between me and my brother and that account also has Garry's Mod), and I've played it from at least 2014. Something about the endless feed of new mods/addons has me hooked. And due to some addons requiring CS:S or Half-Life 2 episodes, I've gotten Orange box and played through Half-Life and it's all episodes (yes, my first experience with HL1 after I played HL2 was HL1:Source). So that is how I got into the Source community. No idea why someone would need to know this, but here it is.

This is what I've been saying all this time to my friends and I am glad the feeling is shared, I personally play HL2 Cinematic Mod + MMod and that's MY definitive way of playing the game but for those wanting 100% friendly vanilla, then HL2Update + MMod is *the* way to go. I mean, I even say HL2 Update outright replaces vanilla HL2, but this is a good video as always.

The recent update to MMod is called "More Iron Sights". That's what wins it over for me big time. I love aiming down the barrel in FPS's. It makes the game feel like a modern shooter but still Half Life 2, which is timeless now.

I need to say, Gunship Mark II is awesome. From Half-Life 2 MMod to Half-Life MMod and the other mods he made that also look incredible... This man is probably a total master of gunplay in FPS games, now it makes more sense when you hear "MMod stands for Master Modification". I could say without his work i would been bored for the last 2 years, just only downloading the MMod for HL2 and installing some new addons like weapon models, animated consended huds or any other thing was fun and enjoyable in every last second even if i wasn't playing it. I believe Half-Life 2 MMod turns the fun of Half-Life 2 and adds the scenical and visual part of Black Mesa, thatbis less fun and more epic, making it almost perfect. For me Half-Life 2 is a game that you can always enjoy forever because his gunplay, movement, mechanics and maps are always enjoyable or fun even if i still shit my pants with Ravenholm and i dont want to be there for more than 5 minutes. And then Gunship Mark II just launches the MMod v1.3 and its not only fun and ejoyable, its now epic and way more memorable too.

If players want original but modern weapon animations i recommend mtb's reanimation pack (or you can put it on mmod, but for mmod i would recommend IIopn Works PROJECT: HL2 (reanimation pack) that adds half-life alyx's gordon arms too, so choose what you like)

I wish we saw more of how the combine and human alien aliences work for and against one another, and I wish we learned what other sorts of weapons the rebels use make and steal from other hostile potentially equally intelligent threats other than the combine. I also wish their was an enemy that could cause earth quakes and manipulate gravity to a degree and flings stuff at you or uses them to shield itself like a alien controller but Much better.

To any new players, it is now better to use original half-life 2 instead of update as the mod is older and there has been engine upgrades. So best is Half-life 2 (normal file)+MMod+a texture pack.

As cool as mmod is, I kinda almost prefer vanilla hl2 weapons in some cases. None of the weapons feel as punchy as the base hl2 ones except for the shotgun and pulse rifle. Update is just a straight upgrade to hl2 though.

To go trough this in hard mode, I had to go back to the big control room (When Alyx exit the vent), to transport the two turrets to this part, otherwise it was impossible 💀

I think half life 2 plays best in vr, except through gmod since I like the dynamic weapon reverb mod and the custom guns.
