Half-Life 2: Update is a modded version of the regular HL2 that adds some graphical improvements to make the base game more in line with the episodes.
However, not all the improvements are quite visible. So today, I show you some of the differences that you can expect in this mod and how they impact the overall feel of the game.

Garry McTaggarts commentary was taken from the developer commentary in the Lost Coast stand alone demo Valve released in 2005. McTaggart doesn't work at Valve anymore, nor does he know that his commentary is being used in this video. Just the heads up.

Thanks for the short review. Btw the maps filesize is larger because I have included both HDR and LDR (default lighting). So if someone does not like the HDR effect, you can just select HDR to none in the video options. Since you mentioned Cascade Shadows Maps and other effects ... very possible in the next version... and probably for the Episodes as well. Thanks for playing!

Actually, Valve couldn't make better graphics and higher texture or shadow resolution because the original game released in 2004 and 1)it must be packed in CDs (650 MB)/DVDs (4,7 GB, more, but less popular format, still many cd drives); 2)computers in 2004 were much slower than today. look at DotA 2 and CS:GO, these games look pretty good right now, they actually made things better since the HL2 release So, if HL2 would be released today, even on source 1 engine, it could look better or equal to the HL2 Update

Looking at the base games patch notes it would seem a good amount of this has been added over time to either the base hl2 and EPs(and therefore its mods) , and some others may have been added to the source engine as a whole in updates over time. The shadow example doesn't exist now when comparing the two but there are still differences in the updates code overall, even if the biggest, more obvious or easy-fix changes and improvements it made have been ported over time into the base source engine: but the update still increased the resolution of lightmaps, skyboxes, etc, bug fixes, and other tweaks updated in the actual files. The changes included in the base game are the engine ones like the shadows, and possibly HDR(lost coast) being implikented in base game maps (it appears to be a video setting now)

⁠​⁠@@BRoyce69HDR has been in the base game since 2007; it just is less pronounced than HL2 Update. In fact, several maps were accidentally compiled in HDR-only mode, resulting in them being fullbright in SDR mode (a bug that doesn't occur in HL2 Update).

you missed out particles. There are the fly effects, explosion effects on the falling chimney in the canals, and bubble effects out of a grate in the canal level that had all the manhacks and the explosive barrels

I feel like the bit about HDR is a bit misleading. As far as I know, you can only really take advantage of HDR if you have an HDR monitor, if you view HDR content on a normal monitor it can look different than intended I think.

Nope, it's completely independent! You do need to own Half-Life 2 though. But it doesn't need to be installed.

Hmm... good video. The way you present it is somewhat too long though. The first 2 minutes, for example, all that I need to know are the light map, introduce H2U, and comparisons to the original. It would be much shorter. Another one is the title, it's somewhat misleading and I thought it "could be" another rambling before I watched. I was searching for H2U vs H2/H2 difference.
