I'm going back to college next September, I have a degree in Fine Art and I am working in a print shop and that is what gave me the inspiration to do graphic design, we do sublimation stuff and old negs, posters, loads of stuff and after seeing your video, I have some ideas now all thanks to you! hahah... Thanks a lot. :) I think the most important thing is to show that you work creatively, show and explain a bit of your thinking process etc. Show that you are interested in something. Most private schools need your money anyways. ;) The best of luck.

Ich wurde auch angenommen, von der btk in Hamburg. Die ist sehr gut. Hatte keine Mappe, kam super unvorbereitet, hatte ein paar Sachen aufm Ipad. Wurde trotzdem angenommen, weil sein wir mal ehrlich, 800/m ist schon ein ausschlaggebendes Argument für die. Ob du dir so viel Mühe hättest machen müssen, bezweifle ich daher stark. Hätte aber die hohen Studiengebühren nicht meistern können, und habe mich daher letztlich für die htk entschieden. fast forward zwei jahre später habe ich abgebrochen, weil mir Design nicht wirklich gefällt, und suche jetzt einen praktikumsplatz in einer online marketing agentur. würde NIEMALS NIEMALS mehr ein studium oder ausbildung an einer privaten schule beginnen und auch niemandem empfehlen. Größte Abzocke ever. Als wären die Eltern Millionäre...Auch wenn die btk gut ist, bekommst du dasselbe, vielleicht sogar besser an staatlichen kunstschulen geboten, für umsonst. in berlin gibt es sehr gute schulen. in hamburg sieht es gruselig aus was kreativstudium angeht.

Sena, schade das du schlechte Erfahrungen gemacht hast und nach zwei Jahre das abgebrochen hast. Ich wünsche dir natürlich viel Erfolg bei deine neue Sache. Also, manche kommen leicht rein aber ich weis auch das viele abgelehnt werden. Ich versuche für mich immer Mühe zu geben und meine besten Sachen zu liefern. Aber so bin ich geprägt einfach. Natürlich hätte ich auch mit weniger Mühe reinkommen können aber für mich geht es nicht darum nur das einfachste zu machen. Ich hoffe natürlich das meine Dozenten das auch sehen und auch viel in mir investieren.

Great video but there is a problem getting those books. I can't add or remove any art work, I will have to order another whole new book. As a graphic designer a screw post portfolio will work better for me.

Jeff hey, yeah, the books are bound. So once you’ve ordered one, there can be no changes made. There may be other bounding or book options you can look at that better suites your needs.

Yeah, thats correct. In my opinion and situation, it was worth it. I won't need to show a portfolio very often, and when I do need one, I can add or delete any works, and then order another for only 18€. Back in the day, it would have been impossible to order such a nice book without having to order a lot of them! Now days, there are many websites, where one can order One exemplar! Its pretty awesome if you ask me. But use whatever fits your needs of course!

Thats a quality question. I guess what I would do, If I have never had any contact with that person before, I would first send an email, around the beginning of the week. Then I would call 1-3 days later, trying to reach that specific person on the phone, just letting them know: I wanted to make sure they got my email (If they haven't already sent a reply) and if they have had an opportunity to consider me etc. If you send an email first, then when you call, you can remind them of it. Its really all about trying to stay in their memory. One time, I got a job in a nice Photography studio with absolutely no experience, just because I called several times showing initiative. Hope that helps. There may be others who have different advice. Good luck!

Wilhelmine Wachter Hi! Sorry it has taken me so long to write. We have been very busy. We have been here for about 1 week now, although my wife is back home until we find an apartment. I am staying with some friends until then. It's pretty crazy and difficult to find an apartment here! Just keep believing God will give us favor in the right timing to find someone. I was at the men's conference tonight from that church you mentioned which was great. So far that's the only English speaking church I know of so far. Maybe try ICF but I don't know if they are speaking English or not... I'll let you know if I hear of another one. 👍

Hi, I'm studying high school (11.Klasse) in Germany and willing to apply in graphic design university. I've been here for 17 months, been doing good at school so far and managed to get to Gymnasium. I've got a few questions: 1. I have heard that in Germany state universities are worth to apply in and private ones are not. Is it true? 2. I'm considering between Germany and US since I'm better at English. RISD, an high rated american design school requires as many as artworks created with various choices of materials (oil paint, charcoal, ...). Your amazing portfolio contents however few of observational drawings and according to what you shared, the interviewer didnt pay much attention to them but to works of branding. Is it normal for German standards? 3. Also it would be nice if you can provide a list of graphic design universities of Germany. I have no idea where to start. Really appreciate if you can answer my questions.

Hi, sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you. 1) It might be different for you if you were not born or have not lived in Germany for a certain number of years. The State Universities, can be free here for the Germans. Although, they have to pay a certain Perzent of that back when they have work after their studies are finished. Private Universities usually provide smaller or more familiar and classes. You can have good conversation with your Professors. In a normal university, you could be sitting there with hunderds of people. Private Unis also pride themselves in being ver praxis oreinted. Private Unis cost more, but you can get something called BAföG. Thats money from the State that helps with costs for the University or an apartment (living costs). 2) It all depends on the school. Every Uni is different and has different requirements in what they want to see in the portfolio. Many times you can visit Workshops where they help you and give you tips on your portfolio. I know they provide these at BTK. 3) I also dont know too many. I only know of a few in Berlin. BTK, HTK, Design Akademie, Macro Media. I hope this helps. :)

I am also considering to go to this university (BTK), i'm from Macedonia , and I just wanted to ask if this is a good option , and are there any chances for a scholarship because it is expensive, or maybe work somewhere ( are you planing to or do you work somewhere during your studies or you want just focus on the university?) And also wanted to ask about accommodation in Berlin is it expensive or you will find something that will suit you and your budged?

Oh, thats cool! Maybe we will see each other there. :) I haven't started yet, so I can't really give much personal experience with btk/htk, but im sure its a great option. Thats why im going there. :) Im sure there is a way to get Scholarships. The best there is for you to just write them an email.I was told by the director that a large percentage of the students also work on the side for extra income, so this is possible. I will try and get a small side job as well somewhere. Hopefully in a Design Agency. Berlin is a big city but its still not as expensive as places like Hamburg, or München. I think it should be possible to find something affordable or even a WG. Good luck man!

Hi Caroline, I'm happy my video is helpful for you! Thats great. It is kind of a mixture. All of the Paintings and Drawings, I just put on a white Table with some good lighting and took Photos of them with my Canon 700D Camera. I then put the Photos in Photoshop and cut out all I didn't need in the picture and put the paintings/drawing on a white background. If you don't have photoshop yet, this would be a good place to start. Just take some time and find out a way to download Photoshop and play and learn. You can learn everything on KZbin. All of the Logo stuff I started by sketching my ideas on Papier and then drew the Logos on the computer using Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. You could theoretically als scan them if you have a good scanner, or go to a local shop and they can scan it for you. But our scanner was not good or big enough for that. But don't worry if you can't do too much on the Computer yet with the programs. Thats why you are going to school for them to teach you. I wish you the best of luck!

J Lizaso hey! Well, I think that depends on the school. Out of my gut feeling, I wouldn't recommend it. But you could just email them in advance and maybe just ask them. They may also have a laptop and Beamer setup there that you could connect to and do your presentation from a Beamer. You'd need a USB stick and probably a PDF file to do that.

Universities like to see the content in the medium it is intended for, most importantly paper items to be paper as colours react differently when comparing screen and ink. so if you have a poster design they would want it physically there .

Reza Safira Sorry, I realized replied from my other account. What courses do they offer for you to take? I really depends on the university that you want to apply for. Some Unis are very strickt, some will tell you exactly what the want to see and some just want to see that you can think creatively and can problem solve. You can always look up a Mappen course where you go and they help you to put together a portfolio. I hope this helps.

As soon as you design for others it profit you have to find free license photos or buy the rights for them and sell them for a profit to the person/business your doing the design for. You can use the site, pixabay.com. It's a great place to get pics people load on the site to use for free. Just need to make a free account.

Doing a masters in design is not always in everyone's best interest- especially because because as a designer your work is primarily based on your portfolio and prior experiences. (plus a lot of people don't have the option of a masters, because its only in very specific schools)

I think it depends on the person. Some people may do the Master some others don't. I don't see the big deal. I think that studying a Master can help you to find more about the subject you are interested, like a specific thing. If you have the chance to study, take it :)

Diamonster haha. You don't have to be great at drawing, but it's useful to sketch up some quick ideas or if you're in a meeting with a client. It's always a skill you should practice, but the most of my colleges are not pro's in drawing. A few people are really good.

Drawing ability is a funny thing. I'm not surprised they just glossed over your illustrations, many of which looked very strong by the way. One of my main passions is illustration, and I'm quite good at it, but I almost never showcase traditional illustrations in my portfolio because most jobs I interview for are interested in design/layouts and not how well I can handle pencils or paint. In short, you don't have to be a fine artist to be good at graphic design, but it certainly can help.

I should point out, however, that while stand-alone illustration samples are often not worth showing for a graphic design role, it might be helpful to show your illustrations as incorporated into your design pieces (i.e. a flower painting in a book jacket design). Then you can take credit for both the design and illustration and gain appreciation for both talents, whereas a lot of authority figures might not appreciate illustration skills outside of a graphic design context.

I agree. I read both point of views, that one should specialize in their subject and others say that one should cover a wide spectrum. I think in todays world one should be pretty flexible and be able to show a few different talents. When they work together, even better.
