I use the repaired arm to assist with daily task but I’m not really all that clear on what I can’t do so I just take it easy overall. Does the bottom of your bicep move when you pronate and supinate or was it still dead at the 20 day mark?

in September 2022 I was operated on for the distal biceps tear. I did the recovery alone, I am an MMA trainer. basically, after 6 weeks with my hand tied around my neck, I started step by step. I didn't force anything. I didn't go for complicated exercises. now, almost 7 months later, I fight without restrictions. the hand naturally regained its strength and mobility, partly from training, partly from use in daily activities.

It’s just been a year since I had same surgery and I’m glad to see you rotate your elbow. I’ve lost supination and pronation motion due to ossification which can occurred in few cases out of surgeon control. This complication causes me chronic pain cos it irritates the arm nerves, it could be fixed through another surgery much more invasive but it risks other nerves and even compromise other movement. Visually my arm looks sound, it never got thin or weaker, the grab is good i can do pull ups (still nervous about it). I just think the pain can be treated with massages, stretches and summer, cos the cold weather gets me all stiff. It usually takes a year for full recovery. Please keep us updated.

If it’s a complete rupture then your supination strength will be significantly reduced without surgery. Your age and lifestyle will help you make a decision though. I’m 53 with a job that requires lots of physical labour, so surgery was my only option. Don’t leave it too long to have it done if you choose that path. The tendon will degrade as time progresses which can impact on the success of the repair. Best wishes for your recovery, whatever you choose.

I’m at 3 months post surgery and still have nerve pain in my forearm (from LACN irritation during surgery) as well as some residual shoulder and elbow pain from being in a sling for 6 weeks. Been using mostly elastic band but moved to dumbbells the last couple of weeks. On numerous occasions I’ve had to step back on the intensity due to worsening pain the day after rehab. I’m being realistic as to how everyones progress is unique whilst being very mindful of protecting the repair. I definitely don’t want to risk re rupturing the tendon, so I’d rather go slower and ensure I’m progressing. My ROM is almost at 100% of pre injury but I still get some pain at the extreme range in pronation. That’s always lessening as time progresses. As long as I’m improving I’m satisfied with my progress. Good luck to anyone in the early phase of recovery. Take it one day at a time, do your rehab carefully and you will recover.

I had mine in 2021. As long as you get a surgeon with a lot of experience performing distal biceps tendon repair, you should be fine. It has a fairly low complication rate. Many people get tingling and temporary nerve damage (numbness) in the fingers and on the forearm. This is normal and usually goes away. I didn’t get any at all. If you do get it, just make sure to follow the physical therapy. The biggest issue I had was actually with my shoulder. From having my arm immobilized for so long, my shoulder developed lots of impingement and popping/grinding. It’s getting better, but even two years later, my shoulder is still not 100%. Good luck with your surgery. Also, find out what technique the surgeon uses. I got them “Endo button wit Tension Screw” which is the strongest type of repair

I have a different kind of story. One day five years ago, for no reason I can think of, I awakened to find out that I couldn't straighten my right arm completely and there was mild pain in the area of distal bicep tendon. I got it checked out, had an MRI and learned that I have a small partial tear. The arm surgeon didn't want to operate. It wasn't enough of a tear, he said. I went through physical therapy but it didn't help getting my arm to straighten. The bicep muscle doesn't seem to be tight. It's as if the tendon thickened or something. I still feel moments of pain from time to time. It's hurting today after washing my car. I'm wondering if a second MRI would show whether the tear has healed, remains the same or has worsened.

I can close my hand with reasonable force but I can't open it from the now normal dropped position. I also have severe pins & needles in my forearm, sometimes it feels like my arm is on fire. I guess my message is in hoping that there is someone with a similar story with a happy outcome out there, and secondly to be aware that there is always risk with radical interventions like reconstructive surgery. The post surgery pain is a bitch for a week but the mental boost of knowing your tendon is intact again soon takes over. I’m 5 weeks post op now and slowly starting to exercise again. Can do most things that don’t put too much strain on the bicep itself

@@bradleybarton9064 my surgeon told me that even upto 4 weeks it’s ok. The tendon may “stick” to the muscle tissue a bit but it doesn’t stop them pulling it back down to the bone. I’m wishing you luck man, be prepared for some serious pain for a couple of days post surgery but you won’t care because you’ll be so happy it’s fixed!

I just had my right distal biceps tendon surgery 8 days ago. Looked at my arm for the first time today and it looks the same as it did before surgery in the sense that the muscle belly still looks like it is retracted a couple inches. Did yours look that way as well? I had assumed it would have gone back in place once the tendon was pulled down and re attached. Just very depressed and hoping thats normal before rehab. Seeing the doctor in 4 days. Thanks for your video

This makes me feel very hopeful. I didn't even tear my bicep, I just have distal bicep tendonopathy from working out too hard but it has been extremely frustrating. I was in the best shape of my life, stronger than I had ever been, lifting heavier than I ever have, and seeing results. Started getting pretty severe gradually worsening pains in my left lower bicep/forearm and it has gotten to the point where I basically cant even lift weights anymore, it's just so painful and tight the next day and I feel like Im destroying my arm. Been going to physio and doing some light weight movements to try and strengthen the tendon but it just never feels like it's going to get better. The pain is always there with certain movements and even though it has gotten a bit better it just feels like it's never going to fully go away. To have to take weeks/months off from lifting and watch all my gains disappear has been depressing, especially knowing I will have to gain it all back, and that trying to do that could re-injure my bicep again. I have a crazy fast metabolism so my body absolutely sheds any extra weight that it doesn't need, whether it be muscle or fat.

Ugh! my injury was a traction injury on the bus; I was sitting as I was supposed to, bus lurched, reflexes took over, and I felt it rip. Early August. This is October, I had the surgery and going to P.T. seems to make it worse, or at least no improvement. Suddenly the hand/thumb became full of screaming pain for absolutely no known reason. I am otherwise a very healthy, strong, late 60's person who went to the gym 3X week and lifted moderate, sensible weights with no problems, for most of my life. Now I wonder if it will ever heal. I can't even move my fingers without severe wrist pain.

I had my surgery 6 weeks ago. Mine did not happen at the gym but, when I do get my arm back in order, I will be terrified to do deadlifts again. I'm wondering what caused his injury during the lift. Was it the common reverse grip, or just too much weight, overextension? I may avoid DLs altogether going forward.
@greAX77 ай бұрын
My surgeon told me 9 times out of 10 it happens when you’re fully flexed and fully extended and there is maximum tension on the tendon. If at that stage you give in to the weight because it’s slightly too much but remain flexed you end up overextending just a few degrees and that can be enough to snap it. I did mine snowboarding (random). Fully flexed trying to avoid a fall and my arm got bent 180 degrees out and then slightly over and because I was fully flexed it went over the limit. Happens preacher curling (at the bottom) and deadlifting (at the bottom) and pulling up (at the bottom). Generally happens fully extended 180 degrees. When I finally do some of this stuff again I’m going to ensure I don’t fully lock out especially when it’s heavy weight

It has been over a year since my successful surgery, but I’m having a real hard time getting over my fear of re-tearing it. I’ve tried to search on the internet for any info on how strong the repair is compared to the pre-injury tendon, but can’t seem to find much. Does the tendon eventually heal back to the bone, or is it just the sutures of the repair that hold the tendon in the place via an Endo button?
@AndyWerley Жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the tendon grows back to the bone. My surgeon says I am more likely to tear the other tendon than the one I had surgery on. I would call or email your surgeon with questions.
@Bucky5068 Жыл бұрын
I had a long conversation with my ortho too about that and he said it's less than 10% re tear. Still not sure if I'm doing the surgery.

It’s a tough decision. Because of the time sensitive nature of the injury, I didn’t have much time to decide. I’m 39, so unless something unexpected happens to me, I figure I have a fair amount of active years left in my life, which I why I chose the surgery. It is a long recovery, but I’m glad I had it. There is some risk of temporary (permanent in rare cases) nerve damage. I was fortunate to find an excellent orthopedic surgeon that I had confidence in. I didn’t even have temporary nerve damage. Good luck with your decision. If you have any questions about the recovery, feel free to ask.
