Nice video. Dont overthink the Portugal result. I'm Puerto Rican too and got more Portuguese than Spanish. The Portuguese never came to Puerto Rico but people from Spain and Portugal are both Iberian people and share very similar DNA going back many hundreds of years. In fact other DNA testing companies dont even distinguish Spanish from Portuguese.

Yes Rob. Ancestry was like that as well not long ago, they would just say Iberian, but lately they have changed and are splitting the two. Saludos.

You are not alone, as Puerto Ricans, we are taught that our ad-mixture is: - Taíno Indians, Spaniard and enslaved Africans 1) I too was surprised about Portugal. However, to learn that “The Iberian Union” was created between Spain & Portugal, under the Spanish Crown between 1580 thru 1640, to control the entire Iberian Peninsula, and combine Portuguese overseas possessions like Brazil, under the Spanish Habsburg that would reign under Kings: Philip II, Philip III and Philip IV. 2) The Royal Decree of Graces of 1815 is a legal order approved by the Spanish Crown in the early half of the 19th century to encourage Spaniards and, later, Europeans of non-Spanish origin, to settle in and populate the colony of Puerto Rico. However, by 1825, the Spanish Empire had lost control of all of its territories in the Americas with the exception of Puerto Rico and Cuba. Trying to forestall the loss of these colonies, the Spanish Crown revived the Royal Decree of Graces of 1815. It printed the decree in English and French, as well as Spanish, and distributed copies throughout Europe to attract non-Spanish settlers. The Crown offered free land on the condition that new settlers from all over Europe (Germany, France, Italy, Irish, Poland, Russia, etc. swear their loyalty to the Spanish Crown and allegiance to the Roman Catholic Church. Like Ellis Island in the USA 🇺🇸 This would add to the Puerto Rican Ad-Mixture.

If only people on the continental US understood who Puerto Rican's are. It wasn't until I was 14 that a friend said your last name is Italian, that I realized what my family was. In my research before the internet, I found out that my mom's family was from Spain. My dad's side was from Spain as well, but transients. My last name is Colomba. My father once told me that his heritage goes back to Corsica. Later in life I realized that many of my family / PR friends had Italian last names. Through FB I connected with relatives that for what ever reason were forgotten in PR. They then answered my curiosity as to why there were Colomba's in Massachusetts. My sister had her DNA checked and guess what Ovi .......Almost like yours!!!!!

I am 37-50% Jewish with Taino and Peruvian native 5%, possibly some N> Native American Indian, E European, British, Scottish, Scandinavian,Italian,Iberian, African, and E Indian and some Asian, but I look caucasian mostly. I keep thinking the Jews may have come to the Caribbean and Puerto Rico during the Inquisition at the time of Columbus. There is very specific DNA for Jews because they mostly married other Jews, but they also had to travel because they were persecuted in most countries in Europe and Russia.

But our blood from Europe and Africa comes from so many different countries. I saw the DNA test of a young PR guy, a lil darker than you and most of his European blood came from England/UK. Very interesting. I would love to take that test one day. I suspect my DNA would be (resumed): 75-80% European, 15-20% Native American & 4-8% African. Puerto Rico was settled for the most part by Canary Islanders or Islenos . That resulted in 19 towns in Puerto Rico being founded by Canarios. Our Spanish is heavily influenced by Canarios who formed the bulk of the Jibaro population of the island. I also found that Portugal controlled the Canary Islands for awhile a few centuries ago and that many Portuguese immigrated to the Canary Islands so this would explain the Portuguese dna. Gallegos who are closely related to the Portuguese also settled in the Canary Islands and Puerto Rico. Spain and Portugal form the Iberian peninsula and have very similar DNA with a few exceptions. Puerto Rico has also had immigration from Corsica, Ireland, Scotland Germany, France, Sifardic and Ashkenazi Jews. I am of Puertorican descent and my ancestry.com results reflected at least 18% Native American, 17% England , Scotland, Wales,7% France,3% Spain, 2% Askenazi Jewish, 8 % sub Saharan Africa, 1% North Africa. Spain and Portugal were united for 80 years in the XVII or XVIII century, not only that, if you were portuguese you could join Spain's army and fight, nacionalities weren't as important as they are now and many portuguese have descendants in Latin America outside of Brasil. In fact the Spanish Netherlands were a part of the Empire for hundreds of years, as well as Milan and parts of France, people from all that area could've migrated to America at one point or another and definetly fought in the Spanish Armies.

Ovi, the Jews living in Spain at the time of Columbus, had their possessions, money taken away to raise money for Columbus. They were forced out of Spain, or sworn to become Catholic. Jews settled in PR, but practiced in secret. I also thought I was a mix of Spanish, Taino, and African, but also took the DNA test and surprisingly found I was 32% Spain, 17% Italian, 12% Irish, 4% Jewish, a mix of European, Netherlands, Scandinavia, 12% African (Morocco, Ghana, the Ivory Coast), 3% Middle Eastern, and 11% Taino (Native American). Our DNA mix is a sample of the world, settlers who came from everywhere to start a new life. My mother who was born in Humacao, was fair skinned, partially Albino. She and many other Albinos of Puerto Rican heritage, had been diagnosed with Hermanski-Pudlak Syndrome. Both parents have to have the gene, to pass it on to their children. This disease has at least 10 variations, but HPS-1 & HPS-3 are most common in Puerto Rico, but has been diagnosed in different parts of the world. But the majority of people diagnosed are of Puerto Rican descent. HPS-1 causes pulmonary fibrosis, which led to my mom’s death. The thought is that it was brought to the Northwest part of the island by someone from the Netherlands. There is a study at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). My mom and later I, participated in the study. When my mom passed, we donated her lungs to study the disease. There is a clinic in PR and in NY to help people diagnosed with the disorder. For more information, go to the Hermanski-Pudlak Network. I carry the gene, but married an Irishman, so my daughter doesn’t have HPS, but also carries the gene. It’s considered like other groups-Jews-Tay Sachs, or African Americans-Sickle Cell. As I said, HPS is a genetic disorder mostly found in Puerto Rico. The people who are diagnosed, mostly are those with Albinism, and are legally blind, but there are folks who have more pigmentation, that have been diagnosed. I know there have been articles and tv segments on the island to spread awareness. The HPS Network, which is NY is the only organization that is a source of information, they raise money, have recruited the NIH, and scientists and doctors to not only study, but to open clinics to serve the people suffering w/HPS related symptoms. Most prominent is HPS-1 pulmonary fibrosis, where protein hardens the lungs, and weakens the person’s ability to breathe. Most die if they are unable to get lung transplants. The other forms also involve bleeding, and Crohn’s disease, causing intestinal/gut issues. I hope other Puerto Ricans can become more aware and help support and contribute to the HPS Network, a small organization doing so much work, with little money, and grant writing. I pray that some famous Puerto Ricans would step-up and help support this organization. I served on their board of executives for several years and attest to their hard work and dedication.

Hello Ovi, interesting results I did my DNA test this year and was surprised. All I have ever know is that my parents and grand parents and great grandparents were born and raised in Puerto Rico. I was born on the island but was raised in the state's since I was 3 so I have always wondered about my heritage. My results were quite different I am 51.4% Sub-Saharan African (mostly seneganbian and nigerian)35.5% European (mostly Iberian and southern European) 8.5% Native American with 7.5% Puerto Rican and 1,4% North African & Arabian. The only thing I could think of was my family descend from slavery. Which makes sense given the history. 😕

Hi Cynthia. Your results are interesting as well. It is great to know where we come from and these DNA tests make it easier. The 7.5% Puerto Rican is somewhat peculiar since I have never seen that before. Saludos and Merry Christmas.

Hi Ovi, thanks for sharing your DNA test results. I'm so surprised about your results,that i wonder what mine will be. I have to order the kit to have the DNA test done. I want to know more about my heritage, i have always had that curiosity. Ovi that guitar looks nice, i would like to learn how to play guitar, and my 12 year old daughter too, maybe music is in our heritage. Thanks for sharing with us,take care.

Good luck with your test Zoraida. It's always good to know. The instrument is a "cuatro" Puertorriqueño. Ken, on one of the comments below, sent me a link that has cuatro lessons. Really good site.

@@oviduran i was gonna say it was a cuatro,but i didn't want to be wrong. I guess i know a little bit about music instruments.

I took the 23andMe DNA test and got very similar results. A quick summary: 75% Spaniard from the Basque region of Spain, 13% Native American, and 9% Sub-Saharan Africa.

So do feel you are White European or Black. I was raised in New York City and up until I was 15 I felt to be Black since Puerto Ricans and Blacks were raised together

Obi did you say that the instrument you showed belonged to your uncle named Valentin. My late father in law was named Jorge Valentin from Mayaaguez. Wonder if related?
@oviduran6 жыл бұрын
Yes, my uncle Almon Valentin gifted me the cuatro many years ago. He lives in Aguadilla and half my family is Valentin. I am not aware of having family in Mayaguez, but it's very close. I will ask my uncle. Saludos.

@@egron3182 It's not that they have been mixing, It's more that they are basically the same in terms of DNA. The Iberians of what is now Spaniards and Portuguese people share ancient Celtic and ancient indigenous Iberians ancestors. Moreover, With only a small minor difference in DNA. Finally, Portuguese and Spanish people carry overwhelmingly Y-DNA R1B which is the majority Haplogroup of western Europe.

@@ChrisM-vz4pe I agree with you. About 9 years ago I did the Y-DNA test too and came out R1B.
