I had #500 something, did t know what I had until years later. I stumbled into a massive hp gain completely by accident and thought I would share it with you. If you put two vacuum reducers on the waste gate you’ll gain 75-100 more hp! However you can only give it half throttle from 2nd gear through 5th. Any more and you’ll hit the fuel cutoff and it’s like running into a brick wall.. I drove mine that way for along time and never hurt the engine..

Ahhh, the old overboost and the "Power Loss" light. Been there too, and it's a whole lot of fun. If you check out my other videos, you'll see where this car overboosted accidentally and blew a head gasket. Good times!
@MsMastermechanic3 жыл бұрын
Yes it was a lot of fun.. being able to control the over boost gave me the ability to smoke the Mustangs and Camaro’s of that time.. now that proper tuning is available you should be able to run 12lbs safely.. I did watch your over boost video and yeah 17lbs is a bit much.. if you ever have an issue with it coming out of time check the gear on the distributor, they are plastic and will break..

I remember when the Shelby Chargers came out. They were definitely nice to look at and far more affordable than the competition. Now they're a niche market for a handful of collectors. Sure, I'd like to see these cars saved/restored, but let's be honest the Shelby Charger was least among the performance cars in an era where all cars were choked for performance.

Yeah, I don't think the Shelby Chargers will ever have much value to them. The GLHS cars on the other hand, are going up quickly. Like anything with a limited production with Carroll Shelby's name, it tends to increase in value.

Nice project! I own 86 GLHS #117 and 87 GLHS #306. Just so you know, the rear hatch glass did not say Shelby, that was only on the Shelby Charger, so if you want to keep her original, don't change that. Also, that stumble in the idle is probably the computer recalibrating, as these cars do every so often, Aa the last section of video exhibits a good clean sound, so if you're trying to eliminate the stumble, you won't, and can't on the factory computer software. That’s a great project car. EGR valves were notorious for leaking which caused rough idle. I have a lot of literature on those models.

Nice car! I own a 86 Omni Glhs and in the 80's I bought my one and only brand new car a 86 GLH Turbo. The GLH turbo rusted away but my GLHS Omni is in good shape and I still drive it and autocross it.. Welcome to the wild and whacky turbo Chrysler club. Your tachometer could be a real easy fix if it is dead or intermittent. Either the pins of the tach driver are dirty but most likely it is a cracked solder joint on the board. Pull the board on the back of the tach and resolder the suspect joints on the pins and you could be good to go. Very common problem. There are aftermarket computers to liven her up it interested. Good luck with her and enjoy the torque steer!!!

Yeah, I suspected the tach to be a solder joint. Luckily I've had to fix countless overhead displays on 2000's era Fords and w whole bunch of GM truck instrument clusters of the same vintage. Let's be honest. These cars were inferior when compared to just about everything else on the market in '87. I worked for a Chrysler supplier back in the day and I can tell you that the engineering talent there was inferior to GM and Ford as well. Designing and building engineering program cars in their pathetic Highland Park MI HQ must have been very depressing for the staff. On the other hand, your summary review of this car is great- much better than the car deserves. Good job, but it's probably futile to spend time and money on this car....
@ProjectTimeGarage2 жыл бұрын
While I do agree that overall build quality is less-than-stellar on these, I've had dozens of other cars from the era. In short, it was a bad time for the US automaker. As far as the futility of spending money/time on these, I would agree if this weren't an actual numbered Shelby car, straight from Shelby Americas in Whittier. Over the past few years or so, these along with the GLH Omnis have skyrocketed in value. They are holding steady in the upper 20K range all day long. Have a look at Bring A Trailer or Mecum. They're bringing twice what they sold for new. That's the reason I'm hanging on to this one. If it were a Turismo, 024, or a standard Charger, I wouldn't have given it a second thought.
