I really appreciate that she was concerned about the prong collar and asked to try it herself. She obviously wasn't comfortable with the idea but the owner herself is a great type of student.

@@samwdavis um excuse me but what the fuck lol, im looking to make my pet happy, did they ask to be domesticated??? Hmmm nope! You dont have to dominate your dog in order to get them to listen, i feel for your pets

@@raslasagnethat’s your own opinion on how you want your dog to be. Like a buddy or friend. (They love you, but they won’t respect you). If they don’t respect you, they you can’t control your dog. & Thats fine if that’s what you want I guess, and don’t give the dog away because it has too many issues that you never even tried to help with. But Most ppl like to train their dogs, so that they are more happy and content. Not to be dominate over them? It’s Just like having a kid. When you give boundaries and have rules to follow with consequences, your kids thrive. When left to do whatever, and they have nobody telling them what to do, they feel out of control. Kids and dogs need guidance and a leader to teach and show them the way. When that happens, the dog (or kid) is much more content and can relax. They know they are safe and their leader or (parent) is in control and they know what they’re doing. It’s life changing. It’s not being Dominant over the dog? You have it wrong. It’s giving him clear and easy to understand directions, so he can feel confident, happy and relaxed. When they know their Pack leader has everything under control, then they can see that they don’t need to be scared or anxious or defensive …..which all cause aggression.

I just love how in almost every single training video, be it with aggressive, insecure or untrained dogs, there are a few dogs just chilling in the background. That is the real final grade of and trainer, those dogs trust Matt so much even with insecure and reactive dogs nearby that they look like they're going to sleep.

My veterinarian's office encourage clients to bring in dogs to become more social and familiar with the office and environment. They told me I could bring in the puppies and bring treats while they're on an empty stomach so they're hungry enough to accept treats. I like that Tom made that suggestion because not many people do that.

I love how proud she looks, after that little breakthrough. Head held high - every part of her is oozing: "Look what I am doing! Am I doing it right? Is that what you want me to do? Look what I am doing!!!" What a sweet dog.
@jesusbetancourt8529

Hanna Seithe I don’t think you noticed that the tail indicated otherwise. The dog is being forced to comply with that collar. The dog is smart enough to not fight but to submit to what this dog handler wants her to do in order to avoid the collar strain hence why the the she hold her head high. Don’t get me wrong, this dog trainer does know how to read dogs and and communicate with them very well but this is not an example of a happy dog, at least not during the time of filming this video.

@@jesusbetancourt8529 I disaggree,Bear was much more relaxed and way happier then when she first came inQQ! There was NO collar strain while she was walking around other then a couple slight tugs at the very beginning.........In NO way was she forced to do anything!! ..She held her head high because she was proud,NOT avoiding any collar pressure,??.Properly fitted Herm Sprenger prongs are in NO way cruel and do NOT cause harm OR constant pressure,...like constant pulling on a flat collar does. She sure looked like a much happier dog to me!!!

Speaking from experience, I have to say he was spot on with regards to the veterinary offices. It's unfortunate that most usually don't have the time to spend making your pets comfortable. That being said, i'm lucky to have found an amazing vet office that encouraged us bring our new puppy in whenever we were in the area and would just feed her treats and take her on a tour of the exam rooms and the back rooms and just let us hang out for a bit while they got to know her. This really paid off when she recently got hurt and we had to attend the vets office for an examination and our doggo was happy to see everyone and made the whole experience pleasant and relatively stress free for everyone (under the circumstances).

This is exactly why I am wanting to start a training business of my own. I worked as a trainer several years ago at a company that provided training, daycare, and full veterinary services (I also worked as a technician there). I recently started working at another veterinary hospital after being out of the field for a while and it is true, they simply don’t have the time to work with training or behavioral issues. I plan to go through a formal training program and focus on helping owners enjoy their relationship with their dogs and help vet staff better manage how they handle these patients.

Vet Tech here! Ive been in practice for about 10 years and working now towards vet school. I can say hes pretty correct in that the office (unless its a behavior specialist) is not trained in all of these techniques. We still do our best to handle dogs with the most absolute care and be patient with them, but there isn't always time to really make them feel completely comfortable. (Drs included....especially bc theyre the most busy!) Training at home obviously helps. But his recommendation of calling them and having your dog come in just to get used to the office is brilliant (assuming the office has the capacity to allow that--obviously for curbside that isn't possible right now). The other recommendation I would give (and not every team will take this to heart unfortunately) is to let the team know when you schedule the appt and again when the staff member either takes your pet inside or comes into the room, let them know that your pet is fearful (more than is normal for a dog in a doctors office) and if you know their triggers (men/women, approaching too fast, too strong of a restraint..touching the paws/head...etc). This will really help them approach your pet in a completely different way! I personally have always tried my best to let the pet make their own decisions if I can an take a softer approach or if the way I am holding the pet for a procedure does not bode well with them, I try something different until they are comfortable. The veterinary field is not always perfect, but is getting better about requiring specific training before handling pets which includes reading behavior signals and how to appropriately care and treat each pet. If any one has any questions about restraint procedures or how things are done behind the scenes, Im more than happy to answer!

My gosh. Every video comes with so many gems. I am a veterinarian, I appreciate you highlighting that it is not my job to train other people's dogs to like me, or my office. It just doesn't and can't happen. I ask and encourage ALL new people to the practice and new puppy owners to come hang out in our office and train. I have had exactly two clients in 10 years take me up on that offer. I refer clients to your you tube videos all the time, hopefully the follow through is better there. 😅 Thank you for this content. I absolutely put it to work with my own dogs! ❤

I've been quickly working my way through these videos and obviously the core lesson is one that's been repeated over and over in the videos, but this is the video where it clicked for me and I had a eureka moment. Especially when Tom said, "I can't approach this as a dog lover, but as a leader." I swapped from a flexi lead to the normal lead and basically took our walk with intention. We went for a walk in the morning and again in the evening and the difference ALREADY. This boy walked with me. He didn't put the brakes on, he didn't beg to be picked up. I genuinely believe it's because I took control of the walk and I gave feedback. through his lead. All he had to do was follow me. THANK YOU. We're at the start of building his confidence, but I think by summer, I will have a dog who loves going for a jaunt. And I hope it will fix other little niggles by proxy. :)

You are helping me so much with my dog at home. Nala is a GSD mix and she’s a fearful dog for sure with obvious signs of abuse. With your videos, I found out The prong collar I have isn’t really effective all the time (prongs go only one way) and I found out I was not helping her insecurities. I am now not looking at her much on walks, learning to keep her attention on me, and learning that she’s not an aggressive dog at all, she’s just scared and doesn’t know what she’s supposed to do. So far, she is not barking at people anymore :) next is dogs! Lol I love how detailed you are in these videos, you can tell you aren’t just in it to make money, you really wanna help dog owners everywhere. I greatly appreciate it and while I can’t do the 1 hour sessions you offer I will DEFINITELY be donating.

As a vet tech, yes that is the case a lot of times. Clinic had 3 drs, one would sedate after 5mins, another rarely touched rooms, and the best of them would spend whatever time the animal needed. We would talk in the room while the dog relaxed, we would sit on the floor to make the pet comfortable, move slowly and lightly restrain with the owners help. Still the best Dr to work with

I try to buy some merch, ( I can send it to my friend's house in Az)but you are always sold out Tom and being in Australia, with the time difference, I sometimes miss your new video posts by a few hours. I would say puppies have the sense of smell first Tom, I think that's how they know how to find their mom, they know her scent to find her when they want a feed, I sure they are born with their eyes closed.

We have an amazing vet here. They were more than happy when we visited them couple of times without any particular reason except that to say hi, and let them give my puppy with some food. Free of charge ;-) Now - one year later - when our walk goes through the street where the vet is placed, my dog pulls on the leash (which almost doesn't happen. maybe to some dogs) to GO TO THE VET, and is highly disappointed when we pass by ;-)

I will be getting one of these prong collars for our next dog. My late Boston terrier hated little dogs and she used to choke herself trying to get cats, rabbits, and birds. We used a prong collar with our 120 pound malamute wolf hybrid and I always associated prong collars with medium to large dogs. It took a few years, a lot of practice working with her on a harness to get her to stop reacting negatively to chihuahuas. I was also afraid her eyes would pop out with a traditional choke or flat collar. I wish I had known all of this 15 years ago.

It's always B. They don't open their eyes for the first min 10 days and they don't hear either, but they smell their mommy within minutes after being born.. Thank you Tom, you are awesome!!! love you, Merry Christmas! Hugs -

You are the best dog trainer. My dog Nala is super sweet and wonderful, but the second I get her on a walk she’s super stressed and extremely alert to everything. I even tried carrying her favorite human treats and she would work for food then conk out. Zig zagging in front of me to protect me from ‘danger’ (other dogs) I am now going to try the prong collar. Thank you so much! Nose 👃

1. The shepherd on top of the crate! 2. I feel like the owner is ABSOLUTELY why she’s so anxious. 3. This is exactly how my male Mini schnauzer behaves. He was neglected the first 5 months of his life. This is the first home where’s been loved consistently. But he’s still so anxious, and aggressive sometimes. I also have his sister, we actually got her first but you can see the difference between them, as one dog who’s been shown love since day one and one dog who has been totally neglected. Just kept in a crate. But even if i go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, he IMMEDIATELY wakes up and follows me. If I leave and come back, he AND my female go crazy but I’ve started to ignore them until they calm down but he’s now bites me when i walk in. Not in an aggressive way but the same as my female did when we FIRST got her. He’s aggressive towards people and other dogs. But once he smells people and realizes they aren’t a threat, he relaxes, but he comes in so aggressive, people get anxious and I feel like he senses it and it makes the situation worse. Both of my MS are sooooo co-dependent on me but my female is ok when I leave. He HAS to always be touching me. I understand why, because everytime he’s gotten comfortable in a home, he got put into another home. He’s insecure. I just need to know how to break this behavior. I’m hoping time will SHOW him that he’s STAYING here, always. It’s sad, I feel like he’s just WAITING to be deserted again. 😢 4. I make sure I LEAD both my MSs. I don’t spank either one of them, but I make sure to change the tone of my voice so they KNOW “moms upset”. And I make sure I reward or discipline within 2-3 seconds so they KNOW what they are being rewarded or disciplined for.
