My son and I moved in together. I have a Border Collie (9) and a brat cat (12). He has a German Shepherd (2) and a Blue Bay Shepherd (1.5). The German is all GSD, protective and fearful reactive. Sometimes resource guarding, sometimes just grumpy... And we have doors and gates all around the house because of the cat. You could make a really good training session out of our circus. Anyhow, I always learn things from your videos, and appreciate all you put out. We are a work in progress. We have had a couple CATastrophes where the big dogs have pinned her in a closet or behind furniture. No one was bitten or hurt, but I think we were lucky. Any helpful hints on trying to get living together a little easier. And people coming in the house is BONKERS. Really enjoy your work!! NO BAD DOGS!!

Almost looks like you filmed my 6 month old working line Belgian Malinois. And to those saying socialization should have started earlier - she met new people from day 3 or so. But as she aged her suspicion of strangers increased. This video was so helpful because you gave clear tips in real time with a dog that reminds me so much of my own. I also appreciate how you somewhat normalized the experience considering the breed, lines, and age rather than immediately saying Omg this dog is going to get put to sleep if you don’t get it under control ASAP.

100% agree- I have a female Dogo Argentino whose the same. Shes been on a public beach since a tiny puppy with all sort of socialization. All people, dogs, etc. since a small puppy. No bad engagements or overbearing kids or anything. All gentle hellos. As she got older she didn’t like people touching her or petting her. Even people she met before she suddenly, at about 5 months, would growl and lunge at them. I’ve raised multiple Dogo Argentinos, and never experienced this personality. I’m well adverse and worked with dogs, horses, many animals in general. But this one is a challenge. So these assumptions people say, have never experienced this, so they speak naive and ignorant. Some dogs just have this over stimulated reactive personality and we need to help them get that cartoon out of their brain. 😊❤🐾

One of my favorite things I’ve learned from you is to do a quick tune up with my gsd. It’s funny how a few minutes of quick, repetitive obedience on a leash can remind her to listen to me. We do it right when going for a walk or if meeting new people when she tends to get protective. Those few minutes of focused obedience work help her gain confidence and remember to behave.

I’ve been needing a video that spoke on this! I haven’t found too many trainers who don’t specialize in breeds like malinios who talk about this. I adopted my dog Judah during covid and we knew he was some type of shepherd, but once he hit a year brown patches started starting popping up. Due to this and his personality we’re pretty sure that he’s a malinios mix. He’s very protective, very smart, he loves his family, and his energy knows no bounds. Getting him to back off when he gets like protective isn’t hard anymore, but I know we still have to work on certain situations because he likes to be protective when I don’t need him to be. I also appreciate that you mentioned not making a big deal out of meeting dogs like this because that is not how dogs like this work. Judah can have fun, but he’s a very serious personality and he’s not big on new people or dogs that are over the top when meeting him. He’s a lot like me in the sense that I can get along with a lot of people, but I’m not friends with everyone. Once you spend enough time around him though, he’s a big softie that basks in attention. I wouldn’t trade him for the world. 💙

@@frame-works Pretty good. When we were outside and they weren't making eye contact, he was calm and sniffing. As soon as they accidentally made eye contact, he started barking and getting riled up. Once we got inside, similar tactic. No eye contact at first. But we'd put treats on the floor near them so my dog would feel more comfortable approaching. We slowly introduced more direct contact over the next 3 days based on how he was reacting. On the 3rd day he actually went and sat on my mom's lap.

Great video. I have been using the fence barrier with my reactive GSD and it works a charm. It also prevents people from trying to touch her against my advice. I think it helps if I talk to the person on the other side of the fence for 5 to 10 minutes. I believe this shows her the person is not a threat. A couple of people have insisted on reaching a hand out to her and she reacted quite violently. It seems she will never like those people. Aproper introduction is well worth the time it takes!

Thank you for saying no baby talk!! And not making a big deal. I constantly have to tell people this, including vets, other handlers, and groomers. My German Shepherd is very picky and highly sensitive to people’s energy. What has worked for us is “guest management” which you’ve referenced in some of your past videos. We always instruct people (friends, family, and boarding handlers) not to look at him directly, keep their body language neutral and to not pet him. This has allowed him to sniff and approach at his own pace. It has worked beautifully! I’ve also learned to accept that he just won’t like everyone and performs better with some over others (like Kyle in this video).

Our dog is a 2 year old rescue 50lb mastic mix. She is very skittish of most new people especially men. We have been introducing her to as many new people as we can. We ask the person to not pet her or make eye contact. We find this works well for her then she gets to sniff and decide. We also give the new person some kibble to drop when she’s behaving and that helps. But there seems to be some people that she just doesn’t like.

This is something I’m currently working on. Rescued from the shelter 2.5 y/o GSD that is very fearful of dogs and children to the point of aggression. The catch, she doesn’t bark and I can redirect her to ignore distractions and stay with me. She mainly will lash out when the unfamiliar child or dog gets within 6-10 feet of her I can see the cues such as hair raise, tail tuck, ears go down to the side, and her mouth will close as soon as I see that I correct her, she is comfortable with adults including strangers but I’m thinking the fear of dogs and children has to do with trauma. My solution, I found a reputable trainer that specializes in behavior and has worked with shepherds and malinois for 20 years

My newest female German Shepherd Takanni had originally come from a bad home where she was beaten. Her second home "didn't have time for her", they sold her/rehomed her to me without giving me any idea how bad her fear of people is. I've had her since the day before Thanksgiving and I've made a lot of progress with her in a short time. I tell people who meet her for the first time not to take it personally when she growls at them and backs away. Little by little she's getting better about letting people touch her. Takanni has to make the first move and give a stranger a sniff and a lick before she let's them touch her.

Best ‘trick’ I’ve learned with night barking (most common Pyr issue) is to do a property/fence walk when they start barking. I concentrate on the area or direction they are barking and get in front of them to ‘take charge’ so to speak. Usually at night, so I do the walk with a flashlight. Over time, all I have to do is shine the light around the property and my dogs relax and quiet down. They will still alert, but less frequently and much less frantically. I’ve also spent a good amount of time working on socializing by bringing them along town trips and visiting shops that allow dogs and just going about my business. They have all been good around people in social settings. Hope that helps.

Love this video. I’d add a couple of things…with this type of dog (and I have one), the person you’re trying to acclimate the dog to should be willing to work with you and the dog to overcome the skepticism. If they’re not, it’s quite pointless. Additionally, it’s very important that they emit the right energy and try not to assume the worst just because the barking frightens them. These dogs are vastly misunderstood at times, and it is highly unfortunate. I do like that you mentioned, these are things to work through if the person is going to come around often or be around an extended period of time. Those who visit once every year, two years, etc…that dog is meant to observe its average day/environment and be on alert for things that are out of the ordinary. Visitors that come very infrequently are out of the ordinary. Unless you really want it to be, this breed is not meant to be super friendly with everything and anything, it’s not how they’re naturally wired.

I had a college friend who did a lot of dog training (we met in 4H dog class). She had a 'sharp' Doberman that I NEVER trusted, though to my knowledge she had never actually bitten anyone. She did just what you said , moved to pounce and a low growl EVERY time someone got up to go to a different room, in or out, and even to the bathroom. They had done a lot of training with each other, and the dog was rarely out of my friends sight. To my knowledge, she never did get calmer with outsiders, but was wonderful with my friend's four children. Amazing, but still a little worrisome.

This is very helpful. My problem is with my rescue German shepherd who will flee instead of confront. He had no obedience when I got him at just one year old. When lumber fell in my husbands shop he fled for his life, literally, on the first day we brought him home. Slipped his collar while I was holding the leash. With the help of a local organization called “I Paw’d it Forward” run by a one woman show, we were able to capture him after a very long week. Kari set up critter cams, baited traps, etc., as we set out signs and my #. Several 90 degree days later and he was back again. This shepherd is now 2 yrs old. I also have a 10yr and 8 yr old shepherd. My new guy is good working obedience with me. Anyone else he tries to flee. When family come over I have resorted to putting him in the garage kennel as he is constantly running from people. He suffers from this stress still. As my older dogs are chill, I’d hoped this would influence him. Anyway I would love a video on a dog like this. Living in extreme fear of everything is a hard way to live. This fear can be triggered at objects as well. If something is different or new to an area in the house, he will avoid the object or bark at it. example-an umbrella opened instead of closed, or a hanging basket he hasn’t noticed before. Would love to make this sweet dog more confident and really live his best life.

Not only for dog owners to learn, but if everyone could see and understand what you explain in here; especially, people that 🙄 want at all cost "be friends" with your dog and they don't want to. Instead of doing good causes dog owners trouble (I try so much to not being reactive myself 😡😜)... Many important details in here. Another great video 👏👍.

Yes - I am dealing with a timid snapper . A goldendoodle- super smart and very attached to me - 5 months old , pretty well trained in the basics ( sit , stay , leave it etc ). She is a bit timid and will retreat behind me or far away when someone new approaches. If that person insists ( why do people NOT listen ?!) on trying to pet her , she will growl ferociously- teeth barring , .. ready ti snap . I just stand in front of her and I make them back off ( the too friendly human ). ..If not too friendly ( the human ) she eventually goes up to them . She went to a puppy day care last week and she came out immensely more confident ! A pack of dogs , dog people , she is transforming. Definitely potential fir an anxious biter

Thank you. I have a German shepherd rescue. He is awesome with me and my husband. But he is reactive when my kids adult kids come over. So they don't come over anymore. I have asked them to make time to help me train him on leash or walk with me and him. Hasn't happened yet. He also doesn't like anyone (except me) touch him around his head, neck or paws.

Same here, my lab mix has no problem around people in public but when someone tries to approach him directly he starts to slowly back up and give ‘em a low growl when they get too close! This is when my anxiety goes from 0-60 in 3 sec 😫
@lizaanicole2 жыл бұрын
@@peks4924 mine is the same way, though I know she'd never bite. If people would listen and just ignore her, she wouldn't growl and would probably have let them pet her eventually.

I love the Place command. It was the only command that help me train my girl, once she understood that I could springboard off it. Now off leash I can place her anywhere and have snarling snapping dogs on leash go by. She isn't perfect yet but I am considering e collar to extend the length of stay or place.

I have a 4 month old Doberman. I got her at almost 8 weeks. I gave her about a week to get accumulated to the house and us before I started working with her aside from crate and potty training. I work with her every with obedience and leash training. I also play on a horseshoe league at my neighbors bar. I take her with for a few hours to socialize her. However she still gets a little skid-dish with new people, especially on leash. So what I’ve been doing, is I take her about 3x a week to work her at Home Depot. When people ask to pet her. I immediately tell them to let her come to you and smell you first. Home Depot is really a great place to take your pups for training and socializing, when they’re young. Great for training with distractions, and getting used to people, but also get to occasionally see or meet other dogs

Aww, Spiros clearly likes and respects Kyle. I have a 3 yr old Mastiff mix who is extremely fearful of people which makes it challenging to take him to new places. In new environments, his flight kicks in and he tries to remove himself from the situation. I try not to "flood" him, but I'm struggling to find the balance of exposing him to new environments while keeping him calm and preventing him trying to scurry away. It's definitely a challenge. Anyone else have this issue?
@Dintermint2 жыл бұрын
we had an easily spooked bullmastiff, not quite as old but came from a sleepy town right into the city. we found spots to sit on the ground with him on my lap/between my legs and we would just eat some carrots and apples together while things happened around us which helped a lot.
@TribalLotusFlower2 жыл бұрын
@@Dintermint Thanks for responding. We are currently in a class that meets at area restaurants with patios where we do this exact exercise. He lays on his mat quietly, but can sometimes get spooked by the people and environment. Having the other dogs with him boosts his confidence immensely. The real challenge is walking to the restaurant - it's usually a "high-traffic" area with people walking around and plenty of sounds/noises. Treats don't work in this scenario as he is on high alert and just wants to get away from everyone and everything. So basically, it's the route getting to the fixed position that is the challenge. Hopefully, that makes sense. Just a bit of background, I rescued him at 7 months from the shelter (abuse case), and he's come a long way, but we are still working through his fears. Thanks again for taking the time to respond! ❤️

Yes, I have that challenge. A hound mix, rescued at 18 months, no problems with fear until she heard a popping sound at 3 years old. Now she is fearful of open spaces like in a park, or certain sounds. I try not to flood her either, but need to take her to places that are in the open and I cannot predict what sounds we might encounter. She will panic and want flee.

Got my fearful 97lb Dobe used to a Hound of the Baskervilles muzzle. Without the muzzle, I really have to watch his body language which is so incredibly subtle to notice if you're not in tune to your dog. Without the muzzle I have to tell people, ok you need to stop petting him please. Will usually say to people that insist on saying hi to the dog, ok but you have to stop petting him when I tell you. I also put my guy on a sit. Tell the people he has to approach you never the other way around. I tell my guy, want to say hi to your friend? Go say hi. The muzzle helps build my guy's confidence too. Barrier for the dog and the people. Just helps keep everyone safe - just in case.... hope that helps.

This is a helpful video for me as I'm working on this right now. I have a Presa Canario who by breed is wary of strangers and is a little fearful. It's been a challange but we've only had one mishap and it was 100% my fault. She didn't bite but gave him a hard head butt when he got down too close, too fast with baby talk (everything you just said!!!) Now I have more knowledge to set her up for success. As always thank you for your guidance & help!!

I love these videos! Tom does a fantastic job explaining these issues. I've trained my GOD'S in obedience, SAR, and agility. I worked helping a friend( trainer), with protection work. I really think this videos are extremely helpful for the average dog owner. I also have to comment: I am so tired of people here in the US thinking, if you are out walking a dog they have the right to pet them! No, they do not. I've lived all over the country. And outside the US. People in other countries take their dogs everywhere with them. And people ignore them. They may say, " You have a beautiful dog." If the wish to pet your dog, they ask. But, Ihave noticed how many people try to pet your dog( or tell their child to go pet your dog) without your saying it's ok? I know severs service dog owners who tell people not to pet their dog, and they still do! Thees3 dogs ALL wear vests that say, " DO NOT PET! And, " Dog Working." And people simply think they have the right to your dog. Get it together people.

My dog almost 3 yrs old German Shepherd/ Pharaoh hound mix has a really bad time with new people and even people that he knows that he grew up with. He is very scared and unsure. I try to work with him but he is like 100 pounds and as time goes by he doesn’t get better. He has bit a person. We do have people not look at him or speak to him. We put him in his crate where he stays now. We have an other dog that is a 2 yrs old that is friendly but will just bark and growl then sniff. She is a husky/pit mix. We have tried everything but it seems to not work. I feel that I have failed him. As I watch this video I have learned more and going to introduce all these basic commands again and work with him everyday.

Did this yesterday with a friend, worked great... I followed Tyler Muto's hand off method though... Having the dog in the middle like this video seems a little forward if you have a serious dog but maybe that was editing? Muto walks with the dog's main handler in the middle... And the stranger and dog on the outsides... After the sniff test pass, we just walked together, I passed over the leash and faded back. She flipped around with my dog and walked him right into the house. He was totally chill after that....easy peezy.

I have a Aussie doodle and she’s the same way. Got her during Covid too. I’ve been working with her on leash and she’s great so long as no one wants to approach her. She’s not aggressive either so she backs up and barks and runs behind me. She’s “friendly looking” so people want to pet her. I tell them “she’s not used to strangers” but kids don’t understand.

I love the change when Kyle took the leash, like night and day, thats how our shiloh shepherd girl is with me super playful and lovey. We are still working on walking at my pace rather than full speed ahead, she is sooo quick its hard for her to slow down. We also don't have a place with fences to do proper exercise off leash so 3-4 mile walks are what we can do now.

Rook is extra attentive to certain people. Other night friend over for over two hours. Rook was sleeping and hanging out, friend gave him some treats. Very cool. My friend got up to get more wine and ZING!!! Rook sprang up barking and looking like he's gonna bite! Stopped short, backed up as I corrected him. Who wouldn't be wary after that?

What I am working on: (1) my dog 2 yr old mixed breed barks/growls like crazy when another dog on leash walks past house. Sometimes people too. He paws at window. (2) loves my other dog but barks at strange dogs on walk. Sometimes a bit aggressive. (3) gets really scared on walk now because there were fireworks. Goes 3 houses down and stops.

Have sent the Nigel Reed video of the reactive GSD whose owner was at her wit's end to many of my students. Works like a charm. Joel Beckman videos are also great. Check out the Rottweiler named Creed video. I have also used Victoria Stilwell videos when she does the removal technique or just doing a simple about turn and going the total opposite direction of where your dog wants to go. Once calm, 180 degree turn back the way he wants to go. If they start pulling before you turn though, it's too late. You know the dog is leaving you, just turn and the dog corrects himself. Hope that helps.
