Eating from your hand is bonding with your Dog. If someone thinks it's yuck not sure why they have a dog in first place.

If I had this issue I would train with nitrile gloves and wet tissues at hand. I saw professional trainers using different types of gloves or taping to spare their fingers. I own the old " The power of training dogs with food", happy to hear the core informations are the same in the new version!

My gut feel is this person didnt want slim on their hands - I dont think it was an issue with a dog that takes food so aggressively that they draw blood when they snap. Thats an easy fix that I have covered in detail in our training videos and possiibly on our KZbin Cghannel. But thanks for commenting.

@@efrawley55 but if that is the case, wouldn’t it be better to train the dog to take treats, food, even medications “nicely” without biting? I’m no professional dog trainer but I have broken several aggressive “food grabbers” by withholding until they take it calmly. It’s really not that hard…..

@@efrawley55 Thank you for replying. I am familiar with the technique of handling food reward with a cupped hand to avoid being accidentally bitten. I suggested nitrile glove with this particular pet owner to avoid the contact with the dog's saliva which seems to be the problem.

@@deannash4042 If that works for you then thats OK - my experience is that it takes a lot of time and training. Where as if a trainer learns how to give food rewards the way we teach, they can deliver food to any dog at any time without getting dog bit. With our method I an take any dog and they can learn to take food - now I will say that a dog that bites a hand needs to learn that that behavior is not going to be tollerated - which means it gets corrected. No IF's And's or Buy's - biting the hand will result in a meaningful correction.

I don't disagree with your method at all. I hope that was not how my comment was perceived. It's a great technique for luring and maintaining engagement. As I'm sure you'll agree, it is important in the longer term to ensure the dog is polite when taking rewards.

Suggestion? If it's a yucky thing, couldn't they use deerskin gloves during training? These gloves are thin enough that you can handle the food easily. They are also tough enough that most of the time them doggie teeth can't get through them. Not always lol but mostly. Plus no slobber on your hands. Would you think this is a good idea, or no?
@lisafoster4468Ай бұрын
The trouble is, it doesn't translate well to the real world, because the dog will realize he's not getting paid if the gloves aren't there.

Teach the dog how to catch the treat . . . One of the ways I taught my dog to take a treat.
@TheWarriorScoutАй бұрын
When tossing a treat you're teaching the dog catch, you're also teaching them to snap at the food. You might, unfortunately, be creating future problems that have to be addressed. 🐕

@peterl0815 If you have a soft dog, you might get away with it. If you have a high drive dog, you will get bit. Now, luring is a fundamental part of dog training, and you have to be able to present the reward properly by hand. Once your dog has learned how to properly take a treat through luring, you can toss treats to them and limit those nipping issues.

@@TheWarriorScout I agree - I produced a video just on Luring its kind of an art form to do it correctly. Its on our web site in the list of online courses. leerburg.con
