There are vampires in the ant world, and today we meet them. A new ant colony known as Dracula ants (Stigmatomma sp.) has come to the Ant Room, and what we discover in this video about their secret blood-sucking lives, is not only mind-blowing, but is actually new to science! If this colony ever grows up to the point that they need a lot more space, which they most likely will since they're in your care, you should have four of the towers around a larger, square enclosure to act as a castle (it can be called the blood castle). The castle could be connected to a larger/smaller enclosure which can be called the Blood Courtyard. The castle would also be connected to a large enclosure, that has water- the Blood Moat. After this, if additional space is needed, more towers can be added that connect to the Blood Moat, they would form the Blood Village. And maybe other things such as a blood forest could be created. I cant wait until next week to see your colonies and the next time we see these amazing, new ants. Edit: I forgot to say that these names are just placeholders for whatever better names. Theres too much blood in it, lol. Also shout out to ammy thesta, the name Blood Moon Kingdom is amazing! That would be such a cool name! *if you, ants canada, read this comment, please, please read the comments. They have amazing ideas!*

Despite these ants having, what we would call, dark and morbid practices, its a very logical and smart way to survive. These ants have something other more typical ants don't, a buffer against starvation or scarcity of solid food. If a typical colony of ants runs out of food and can't find more in the time it takes the queen to starve to death, the colony fails and dies. But these ants get a little more time to look for food thanks to their larvae. Yes, the larvae will starve, or get consumed, eventually and the adults soon after, but during that time the adults can search for food and be at full strength. Once food is found they can start replenishing the nest with larvae. So the colony may get smaller and many will die, but the colony as a whole is less likely to fail and die off completely, continuing the species. This all hinges on how long a typical one of these ants can survive on a single meal though. If they have a faster metabolism than solid feeding ants they will just starve and die around the same amount of time a typical ant colony would without food. I am rather awe struck, and utterly fascinated, by this. These ants remind me more of some sort of automated machine than a life-form, I find that to be kinda cool, and scary at the same time.

From what I saw, the adult ants were _not_ feeding on the solid parts of the egg yolk. Instead, they were simply absorbing the liquid parts of the egg yolk with their lapping mouth parts. It may be the case that the adults feed not just on hemolymph but on _any_ nutritious liquids--hemolymph just happens to be nutritious and is more readily available in the wild. If the adults sense a liquid and taste nutrition, they will absorb said liquid regardless of whether it comes from their own larvae, pupae, subdued prey, or egg yolk.

Laughing Emoji, each species has evolved different nutritional requirements as well as different means of acquiring those nutrients. Think about how some animals are herbivores, some carnivores, some omnivores, some detrivores, some coprophages, some hematophages, and so on. Even among herbivores, some have adapted to only eat eucalyptus leaves, e.g. koalas, while others have adapted to eat primarily a broad variety of fruits, e.g. toucans.

Someone in my group theorized the Dracula Ant pupae and larva produce and store extra blood in the outside layer of their skin to feed from to keep themselves from being essentially 'dried out'.

That would make a lot of sense, since removing the blood from the larvae can after a while kill the larvae, where as eating its half digested food would just make it a little hungrier, and the larvae of the ants can eat things the adults cannot, so the ants could just feed them stuff they cant eat, so your reasoning makes sense.

Since Halloween decorations are going to be in season soon, you should buy a small haunted castle set and build a habitat around that. Castlevania has taught me that Dracula absolutely has to have a castle to reign from and I don't think Dracula ants should be any different. Also, I think you should call them the "Sanguine Ones" since sanguine has two meanings that both fit these ants well. One meaning is a "blood-red color" relating to their feeding habits, and a second meaning is "optimistic or positive, especially in an apparently bad or difficult situation," relating to AntsCanada's boundlessly upbeat attitude, even when things don't go so well.

@Juliette Seeing red is the same as red light. The colour we see are unabsorbed parts of the visible spectrum reflected off objects. So blood is red because it absorbs all colours besides red and that red light is reflected and observed by us. The ants probably see blood as black in colour since their eyes can't detect red light and their brain can't process something it can't detect. (they still know its there by colour contrast and their other senses) Its kinda like us in a dark room, theres plenty of microwaves and radio waves all around us, but our eyes can't detect it, and our brains can't process something we can't sense, so all we see is darkness.
