It's really cruel. Not funny at all. Why is he torturing these poor creatures and plants? We are all living beings and organisms. The fact this channel is verified for this is disgusting. Don't kill or harm Ants. Insects, Arachnids, Fish, Mammals, Reptiles, Birds, Crustaceans, all creatures think and feel as research shows, as it also shows all living beings have subjective experience and the same capability for consciousness we have (can only measure capability, we can't prove consciousness in ourselves, other humans, or other creatures, so capability is the term used). Ants also pass the mirror test (although fyi the mirror test is only helpful for positive results. I.E if a creature recognises onself in the mirror, it's a great indicator of self awareness, but if they don't, it isn't an indicator of anything because negative results hinge too much on perception, circumstance and senses [Dogs will sometimes recognise themselves, sometimes not, probably due to relying more on smell for identification for example, whereas we use sight more often]). Even if no creature thought or felt, they are still living organisms as is all life and should be treated with Love, care and respect, as with all Life too. Use harmless repellents to avoid and prevent infestations and gently and carefully move them from your home if they are there. Ironically harmless repellents are also the most effective method and when the proper repellent is used (usually Plants or Oils) and is properly harmless, then it is exactly that.

TheTaterTotP80 If there is any man that loves ants more than anyone it’s him. Those ants when in the wild deal with natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, and droughts. They also have to deal with many different predators INCLUDING the type of plants he is using in this video.

That's a little different. He's feeding them crickets, because he keeps the ants captive and they rely on him for care. So would it be ethical to introduce a predator into the their habitat to kill them? I believe it's alright though. There were way too many ants and they would soon start causing serious problems. They should be kept in check in some way, and a natural "predator" seems like the best solution instead of just culling them

I'm a botanist as I've mentioned before and this video completely floored me. This is AMAZING! What an incredible observation you've made there! I agree with your theory as well- that the pitchers being carnivorous for a short time is a way to gain the ant's 'trust' and makes the relationship a complex combination of predator/prey and mutualism. There are quite a few mutualisms like this in the plant world, where sugars are exchanged for mineral nutrients. The two that really spring to mind are the mycorrhizal networks of fungi that mesh with nearby plants, and the bacteria filled nodules of the leguminosae that supply plants with nitrates in return for carbons. The reason you need to supply your pitchers with distilled water only is because most tap waters are at least a little alkaline, and all acid-loving plants absolutely hate that! If you're finding supplying distilled water too expensive, you can try flat (no bubbles allowed!) mineral or bottled water. Just test a drop first with a strip of universal paper to make sure it's not alkaline. Plant love forever! :D

Lis Morris huh, the mutualism that springs to mind for me is ant mites who eat ants garbage so they gain food and the ant gets clean (guess where I learned that) and the cleaner fish aka dentist fish who clean shark teeth by eating the stuff around the Shark's teeth. My friend really likes plants too, she has air plants, orchids, and a plethora of other plants but I breed chinchillas to help the species grow in numbers considering that it's a critically endangered species. So rock on with your plants!

dont use mineral(the mineral part is bad) or bottled water(usually tap water with a label) for carnivirous plants. Might work for orchids, but most carnivirous plants its not good. Use rain water. Where he lives it should be easy to collect rain,
@lismorris5370
@lismorris5370 7 жыл бұрын
As I said, mineral water is ok as long as it's not alkaline for just those reasons. You're right, though, rain water is better. I live in the UK, so rain water is not difficult to get here! Rain water is also best for orchids.

I mean, Venus fly traps are kinda slow at closing and it takes a week for them to digest their prey before opening up again, and with this many ants, it would make sense that to go with a plant that just sits there and gathers constantly attracts prey
@sazji

The lid is the operculum. :-) Those Nepenthes are still young; they will get quite a bit larger if they're happy. The most important thing is that they stay moist and get really good light; otherwise they'll stop producing pitchers. It looked like some of the pitchers didn't have any liquid; they may have been older or kept dry. If there is a little and they catch ants, they'll produce more. Also the peristome are interesting in that the ants can often keep their footing when they're dry, but if they're wet, they become very slippery. Keep us updated on this experiment. It would be awesome if you became a Nepenthes grower too; you're in the world's best place for it! :-)
@edkroketje1
@edkroketje1 7 жыл бұрын
Actually a lot of Nepenthes species hate direct sunlight. they need a lot of light indeed, but not direct. a shady place is the best, as long as they do get light for long hours. If they get to much direct sunlight the leaves will often turn red instead of green.
