Every time I see someone checking their foundations like this I'm reminded of one of the first buildings I built... We were stretching a tape across the subfloor to double check our measurements and squareness. We kept getting different numbers that were way off... could not figure out how we would check and it would be one length and then we come back and check again and it would be a different. This went on for a while until I finally figured out that the tape was inches/feet on one side and meters on the other side. Once I figured out to use the same measurement the subfloor was almost perfect. Laughed for a while on that one.

I wonder why they didn't use a laser measurer instead of tape or steel that stretches...
@MrBswede11 ай бұрын
Nearly 50 years ago when surveying roads we used a steel chain (tape measure). We tried to always have the same tension on the chain to be reasonably accurate but if you wanted to be really good you would use a gauge hooked to the chain to get the same tension each time. Mostly we surveyed logging roads though so it was not a big deal. For good gravel roads we got laser measurers - that was cool back then!

I was just wondering about metal tape temperature fluctuations when you mentioned. How much variance would you get over 100' with a metal tape from a 40 degree day to a 90 degree day (50 degree temp swing). Would the tape change 1/2"?? I have no idea, but I do know metal expands.

Hey Kyle, unrelated to the video, but: I'm DIYing my kitchen reno including reframing, sheathing, and new windows. Today I installed the drip caps over the windows, including two windows in an outside corner. So I thought, "how would Kyle handle this?" and trimmed the Z flashing so it looks like a mitered corner but has plenty of overlaps to keep out the water. So thanks for your videos, I've learned a lot.

You two are amazing! I'm a mechanic and although my medium is a bit different, I love it when someone builds something with such a degree of perfection and craftsmanship. I'm actually "in the process of " - looking for an affordable acre or two - having a barndominium built..... I'm having trouble finding a piece of land that allows me to build a smaller place. All the land I find has a minimum square footage requirement that's bigger and more expensive than my needs/ budget. I subscribe to your channel to get ideas and be a bit more familiar with the process when the day comes...... My barndo will be about a 30'x60' with 900 sqft living space and a 900 sqft shop..... Absolutely love watching you two - great work, great team, I hope all the best for you both! I also hope I find a company as good as you when the time comes.....

I have a question for Kyle, when you do your corner brckts, since you cut the brckt any way why dont you put one half on each wall, seems like it would make a much stronger corner anchor. If you need to put a bolt in the post just drill another hole thru your plate ! I know you have the tools and the lag bolts arent to expensive, just a thought!
