In the New Year's Eve video a few weeks ago, I promised that I would put pockets on my Indian Block Printed Dressing Gown and I did! These fabrics are really amazing! I know that some of you folk on The Lime Green Sofa have made one just like it and I would love to see it! So tag me on instagram - kateatthelasthomelyhouse - and if you would like to make one too, the site on Etsy is called Colours of Spirit and tell them that The Last Homely House sent you! It is a really easy design and you can customise it to suit your taste.
The tweed bundle came from shopbeyondmeasure.co.uk
Anna and I made a 'behind the scenes' video while we were filming this - I posted it to Patreon on Friday

I am really grateful for all the support from my lovely Patrons! Thank you guys!
Over in the shop there is the new print run of The Quilt Planners Notebook, my Designer Thread Box with Aurifil and many other treats!

What I love about this chanel is how calm I feel when watching it. No crazy bad news, no loud commercials, no anger or agression. It is so nice to be able to just watch creativity and kindness. Wholesome content is so important. Thank you for creating a space of respite for our battered souls. Tanya from North Vancouver, Canada

Since the beginning of time…I remember my Gram automatically putting the thread in her mouth before threading the needle. It’s sweet how someone can bring back a flood of good memories just by doing something as simple as threading a needle. Fun watching you and Anna work on your projects. You are such blessings to each other and to us!

Seeing Anna doing the pinning reminded me of my mother who was a dressmaker. She had breast cancer, and her left bra cup held a soft cotton prosthesis. She used it as a pin cushion much to the horror of her clients when they had their fittings!

There is more to the story. After sometime the soft prosthesis was replaced with an oil filled one. She then had to unlearn her habit and was terribly worried that she would forget and accidentally puncture the new one!

I work at a montessori primary school in Seattle, and one of the principles in montessori is for the kids to use real, nice, often breakable things - not disposable or "Kiddie" versions. Every day the children set up the classroom for lunch with placemats, cloth napkins, and ceramic plates. They take their lunch out of their lunchbox and onto the plate, and fill their own little glass with water, before sitting down. Every classroom is outfitted by the lead teacher, and my lead teacher chose a collection of block print fabric napkins this year. Purchased from a major retailer which specializes in "international home goods." What I'm getting around to, is that I've now seen TWO of the same fabric from the napkins in your 10" squares! It's like a little tug in my brain connecting the two things every so often, thinking of Kate during my work day and thinking of the kids on a Sunday watching your videos.

I had my own private nursey school - Woodpeckers Nursery School, in Rackenford, Devon, England - back in the 80s, and used the Montessori principles a lot there - I used real things, often breakable things too. Children that parents thought unable to do certain things, proved that with the encouragement to be independent and given the chance to feel they could do things, instead of the negative could not, flushed in front of our eyes, and went on to become confident, able people. How much we can learn in our adult life, that we should not be afraid to try something new, because we are afraid of failing at it, but to let ourselves be free to be the person we can become, happy and confident. Anna is learning too, and has the wonderful you to help her along her journey, as others have said on here, how lucky she is to have a Mother In Law like you Kate to guide her in a positive way to achieve something she never thought she could. I also think that Anna is such a wonderful daughter in law, as you two get along so well together, and are a great team. Blessings and hugs from Jilly & Madge the rescue greyhound, from West Devon ,England.

Back when I was a child, there was a TV program called Captain Kangaroo, He had a large coat, with many pockets; some large enough to hold a bunch of carrots for his puppet friend, Bunny. He had lots of secret pockets. I always loved that jacket. Your story of “losing” items in many pockets brought up this memory.

I just love your channel! Some days I just start anywhere in one of your playlists and just let it run all day while I’m stitching a project. It doesn’t matter if I’m not working on anything similar to the video - it’s just nice to have “virtual stitching buddies” to pass the time. What a treat! My favorite series is the one about your Mom’s quilt tops. What a labor of love to finish all this tops, have them each quilted and then bind them by hand. Sharing them with family members was especially sweet. I hope they appreciate the hours and hours you put into them so that each branch of the family can have a special treasure from your mom. What a legacy she left you and you are now bringing to Anna and of course your granddaughter. Keep sewing - and I’ll be stitching along here in my very own last lonely house in Tennessee!

I grew up spending time each summer at a family cabin in northern Canada. Log cabin. Log bunk beds built into the walls. An old steamer trunk at the end of each bunk filled with old quilts and moth balls. The quilts were made of woolen scraps from old suits. Grays and browns and blues. Backed with flannelette. So heavy that two quilts nearly pinned you flat to the bed. Your tweeds triggered a flood of precious memories. Thank you. ❤

However, your channel has encouraged and inspired me to get it out especially since Anna is learning also. As Kate says 'how hard can it be?' I'm happy to say I'm enjoying the process and added some new fabrics into it which I'm really excited about. Kate and Anna, you are our kindred spirits XO XO

I love to see that Anna has blossomed into a "maker" in her own right! That's awesome! I understand the need for multiple WIPS....sometimes you feel like quilting, sometimes you feel like piecing, sometimes you feel a burst of new creativity, and other times it's comforting to work on something where all the "thinking" has already been done. Everything gets done in its own sweet time.....

I love the tweed TOO! I would love to have some of this laying around. It reminds me of a wool quilt my grandmother made ages ago and it got ruined in a flood. This is what quilts were made of during the depression. It was utilitarian and very practical, using what they had. I love it for that reason alone. I do so wish I still had it.

My Mom used wool blankets as filler for her quilts sewn in Texas. I remember her telling me that the Army blanket from when my Dad served was the best. This was a 9 patch of unbleached muslin and cotton dress prints. The backing was a luxurious cotton sateen of white Hawaiian flowers against a red background. Growing up in Arizona, this heavy quilt only was used two months out of the year. During one of the family visits to Texas, she had gifted several of her quilts to elderly relatives including the heavy wool filled one. May you enjoy your memories for many years to come too 🍄🍄

Try this one weird trick...to thread your needle: Put the eye of the needle on your tongue. Do NOT lick the thread, but trim it on an angle with sharp small scissors. The dampness of the eye of the needle will draw in the dry thread. Try it!

When we were back home for a visit in 1977 - we live in western Canada now - we bought some lengths of gorgeous wool fabric, a tweed skirt, a flat cap and deerstalker hat, plus offcuts, at Otterburn Tweed. What a gorgeous "patchwork" wall in the cabin! You know, I reckon the juxtaposition of a really bright curtain in the loo against the muted tones would be fab. About 20 years ago I did a very muted patchwork quilt, no colours. I wanted to put a vibrant pink backing on it. I allowed the lady who quilted it and my friend to talk me out of it :))

So very proud of you Anna! I have at least a dozen quilts in various stages of completion. The first few days of January were so cold, I was tucked up in my chair with a pot of tea by my side, scrolling through utube and what should I stumble across but a ‘temperature quilt’. So now I have another quilt in progress, a slow stitch hexagon quilt, large hexi for the low temp, smaller hexi appliqué in the middle, and a tiny hexi marking the days we get snow. It’s the picture in your mind that helps you fall in love with something new. When you told us about your new quilt it made me so happy for you! It’s inspiring to watch you grow❤. Kate, you are a wonderful teacher!

Many thanks for returning with the pocket application. I finished my first dressing gown without pockets as I no idea how to do for both sides. My second gown is cut, pre quilted, and ready to be assembled. For it, I used four patch 10inch squares from my stash .Like you and Anna, I started a a new project, a scrappy quilt as part of my New Yea's resolution to clean up some of my UFO's and scraps. Each morning, as I entered my sewing room, the first thing I saw was my unfinished dressing gown, the pieces neatly laid out Today, hubby is cooking, so he day will be spent sewing. I must say that I absolutely love the tweed curtain for the cabin. So warn, and fitting for that bathroom! I know your neighbor will be thrilled. Kate, the hardest part for me in completing my first gown was the belt loops, believe it or not. My vision proves challenging at the best of times, but I carry on. Take care.

Thanks for the tweed link! In the Depression the family menfolk would hunt for a week each fall in search of venison for the winter table. My grandmother and great aunts had made what I called "hunting camp quilts" out of heavy wool tweeds, the batting/wadding was old wool blankets. The original weighted blankets! Alas the moth got most of them but I have always had it in the back of my mind to make some replicas....but a source of the kind of wool fabric they used eluded me...until now! The tweed bundles will be perfect.

Beautiful fabrics and your dressing gown has given me an idea. I love the tweed fabrics too. They are earthy and full of the colours of nature so they will be perfect in your cabin. My father had an extremely dilapadated tweed coat which always hung behind the door of the pantry/washroom of their house in North Yorkshire. It was never worn, but never to be thrown out either! I loved it and now see how I could have repurposed it to a cushion, which he would have enjoyed having.

Wonderful to see you both back together after the new year; I just love the way you bounce off each other and it really lifts my spirits and cheers me up; makes me smile. Love the dressing gown pickets ( you are so right no garment is finished if it does not have a pocket or two). Looking forward to a 2024 full of new and inspiring videos.

Hello Kate and Anna, this was such a fun chat today. Your pockets are going to look great on your dressing gown, Kate. I love the fabrics you've chosen. It's exciting that Anna is going to make one, too. I will be waiting to see it on the Patreon channel. I can't wait to see the curtain in the cabin. Have a wonderful Sunday. ❤😊

You two always make me smile☺️ I’m thrilled to see you working with some Harris Tweed! I have a sizeable stash of Harris Tweed from several visits to Harris, and lots of small pieces of tweeds and tartans from Lochcarron and Stewart Christie. You’ve inspired me to get on with turning them into something form my home-probably a coverlet. Of course, I could always tackle another Harris Tweed jacket-and take a bit of a break from quilting. So many projects to contemplate! I am excited to see what Anna comes up with for her own dressing gown! The crafty bug has bitten her badly! Love you guys.

I learned on a retreat that one should always have 8-10 quilting projects going on at the same time as it is good for the creativity

Hello, Kate! I saw the perfect pillow pattern for your tweeds! Misty made the Charm Pillow on Point on an episode of Missouri Star’s Triple Play 3 yrs ago. The episode is Triple Play: 3 new BLOCK Party Quilts. Misty starts her pillow at 11:50 min. It’s a simple but quick and effective. You don’t even need a pattern. I’m making mine of denim and Kaffe fabrics or batiks for my trailer. No pin needed at the bottom because of gravity-not much gravity when the 2 of you get together! 😂🤣😂 Stay well, ladies! I don't quilt, but love this channel. (and the garden channel) You have inspired me to pick up my needle and thread to do some slow stitch collages, which I'm loving so much. I made the roll up also. So thankyou! 🙏
