Is it possible to add GPU acceleration for the physics simulation? Engine simulator performed pretty poorly on my old Corei7 6700. I'm sure many people especially on Steam have newer more robust CPU's, but some of us get by with older gear and a fast GPU. Love the projects as both a technical and mechanically minded human.

😉 Ideas for new features: ‒ the player could control the fire and monitor its temperature ‒ different fire fuel sources, such as coal, wood, charcoal, gas, steel wool, ect. ‒ a small valve to allow to release some water droplets into the fire ‒ a small electric generator, which could be connected/disconnected to/from that driven wheel ‒ a voltmeter and a lightbulb on the electric generator ‒ a possibility to overpower the lightbulb, so, the player would be able to replace it if the lightbulb burns out ‒ a "just for fun" feature for the player to be able to connect a balloon to the "drain" pipe

This game can only be called steam engine simulator when proper firebox simulation gets added. Idk how that would be added, and the game would definently have to be paid at that point, but having to plan where you add fuel, having to worry about blowbacks (if there's a blower) and having to deal with all the other quirks of steam engines would be anxiety inducing, very fun, and very tiring all at the same time.

The gameplay loop for the steam game could be something like being a steam engine operator. You have a certain rpm and torque you have to deliver, so you must tweak the fire, the boiler, the water inlet, and the needle valve to achieve that goal. Could have upgrades too, like greater water flow, higher power fire, less piston friction. If you want to take this even further, could maybe get upgraded steam engines. Double acting, a steam cooler so you can recycle water. A turbine to get more efficiency out of it. A triple expansion upgrade.

Maybe also change heat control to something like adding a log/coal under boiler, no fine tuning

Ok, steam engine simulator is pretty awesome. My initial reactions, I wouldn't mind some finer grain control, and numbers being displayed. I would like to run the steam engine continously. So balancing the heat, water coming in, and steam going out. Also if you want people to play it longer you can make things adjustable like the wheel size, boiler size, etc. If you add a game loop of meeting some goal (like powering an electic grid), you could get new parts. Edit: After playing for a bit, the idea of multiple levels and a generator isn't bad. So it would be the difference between no load and a load so it would behave different. For each level you would have to keep the RPM in a certain range. You can then upgrade your parts after each level.

Being able to change aspects of the machine, like boiler size, heat, flywheel etc combined with a test track might have helped retention. Having the player been given a constantly powered heat source with a set amount of fuel for the engine and a track with curves, inclines/declines would give the player a reason to change the engine aspects on the fly and see how far they can get. Maybe that could have increased retention, but would probably go in a very different direction, than just a simulation.

Imagine your engine simulators as developer's tools for modders or studios. Imagine if you can design your own engine in Engine Simulator, then export that file into beamng, asseto corsa or iracing. Or look at what the cyberpunk developers had to do to implement realistic noises, they had to record dozens of cars and motorcycles to implement the noises into the game, if they had a tool like this, they could just simulate it. Inspired by your "preparing for success" you should consider releasing a dev tool version of the game compatible with idk the most popular game engine, I think that's Unity, but don't take my word for it.

It might take a few weeks to get everything, but you would have a full fledged game with a unique charm on your hands, with hours of playtime. 1. Create a map of a (fictional) country, with dozens of interconnected train stations across it. Enough to be a schematic with mountains and seas, tracks and stations drawn. 2. Each track would have some slopes, turns and so on. 3. Variable haul and railway state, adding an additional variable. 4. Campaign: deliver x tons of cargo from Y to Z station. Difficulty: how much cargo you take. Youd start on in a flat, rich section of the map, with high quallity rail tracks and frequent stops to get used to the controls, but would get more and more difficult. 5. Missions: get random missions and random amount of cargo. Deliver it across the entire map, possibly leaving a part of it at different stations and having to plan the route yourself (like risking going through a difficult section, or going on a longer path,...). And if you give up on the section, you can restore to any of the stops you took sonce the start of the journey. 6. Free roam: travel freely through the map 7. A different view, where you are the person controlling the train and only see the gauges and hear the engine. 8. Watch the train in a sideview, so you can see the incline. 9. Upgrades, achievements

The way I see it, your game should be classified as a learning tool. If you want to extend play time, you should incorporate either a narration or some kind of written information in your game explaining details about the engine, how it works, why it works, etc.. I know next to nothing about steam engines, myself. But, just from watching this video, I learned about how pressure affects the boiling point of water. That's new information to me. And I think it would do well to put that kind of information in your game.

Maybe adding different steam engines, like the Walschaerts valve gear (my favorite), or the first steam engine, could be interesting. Edit: I realised that the previous suggestion may defeat the purpose of the "game", which is probably to simulate only one specific engine. Here are other suggestions, though: 1 - Make the controls more intuitive, like changing the "spin wheel manually" to be left and right arrows instead of spacebar. 2 - Make a leaderboard for the fastest speeds ever. I suggest to make two: one for normal mode and one for the hell mode.

I think you should add different valve gears and different cylinder/valve arrangements. For instance, true piston valves, and slide valves, instead of the strange valve that you had in your model. As for valve gear, there are many wonderful diagrams of different types, from stephenson to walschearts, baker, and gab (along with dozens of others) You could also have sliders that adjust the cylinder's size (the power piston would in this scenario be double-acting) so you could generate more force at the cost of needing more steam or less force but having less steam needs. (a locomotive boiler diagram would also be interesting. plus, with the fluid model, I assume you would be able to actually simulate a draught through the tubes and firebox to help make the fire hotter) All of this is just to appease some steam locomotive nerds, though, haha

Does the temperature gauge only measure the water temperature or will it measure the vapour temp when the water runs out? I noticed it sitting maxed out at 300° at 11:27 without water

It actually measures both, depending on the current water level. For all intents and purposes though, when there is water in the tank, it's measuring water temperature

Came across it by accident as I'm into train simulation and steam locomotives are my favorites, also do live steam in real life. It's a pretty faithful experience to running a model steam engine such as my Jensen 75, and just as addicting, have to admit I've spent several hours seeing how fast and slow I can get it to run, and the whistle is greatly appreciated. Only thing I could think of in terms of improvements would be to add in a reverse linkage on the valve gear, maybe an eccentric to slip the rocker arm to change the timing to get clockwise rotation. Another form of load such as a generator with a lightbulb and ammeter or some simple belt driven tools could provide some incentive to run the engine. On my real Jensen stationary engine, I have it connected to a workshop with a circular saw, drill press, and grinding wheel. Demonstrates how the big engines used to drive factories and such, and of course fun to use to work on little pieces of wood and paper with.

The obvious place to take it would be to have it become something like polybridge, but instead of building the bridge, you build your vehicle. Would be a great tool to teach people a lot of engineering fundamentals and to see what creative people in the community are able to build.

Have you tried other free to play games? You are missing some "features". Why are there no skins to buy? Why can't I buy a bigger version? For real thought, it would be cool if you could use the energy for something (train, saw mill, etc.) But i get it, it is a simulation not a game, and I had a lot of fun with it. I would have liked a number showing how much throttle and brake I am applying. But honestly it is as good or better than most free to play games I have played in a long time. Reminded me of the old flash games days, where people made stiff, because it is fun to make stuff, and no other reason.
@StephenSmith304
@StephenSmith304 Жыл бұрын
Ooh that would be super fun, what if the engine is hooked up to stuff that gets progressively larger and you get the ability to upgrade the engine? Like it starts out as a tiny desktop engine powering a science fair project but you earn some kind of currency that lets you upgrade engine specs / parts as you progress to powering larger things. Kinda like an idle game but there could be some strategic elements to progressing faster. Maybe some breakdown conditions that you need to handle to prevent a breakdown (oil levels?)
@Petch85
@Petch85 Жыл бұрын
@@StephenSmith304 yes and you could add steel properties to the components and calculate stress ranges and cycles and add the fatigue calculations. Then having them fail if you puss them too hard. And 4 years of work later you would actually have a game on your hand ala railroad tycoon 2 or similar. But still a simulation. The sounds of braking metal when the engine explodes, would be amazing.🤣

So, my idea: You're in a steam-powered vehicle of sorts (maybe a car or a monorail) going through a very extreme track (maybe in the Alps) with a lot of slopes. Your task is to reach the end. The problem is that you can go backwards, if your torque isn't enough. Your tools are the original engine + a transmission. Maybe the engine breaks if it surpasses set rpm while going down, or maybe you have a limited supply of both water and coal, and you can resupply only at certain points on the track. Or another idea, leave it be and put effort into a sequel or the engine sim.

I really appreciate the time and effort you gave for this simple simulator. It is fun and i suggest make it more difficult by blowing up something like pressure gauges or the engine itself if you can't control the pressure. That way it is like game over.

If you're hunting for something to encourage retention for the steam engine simulator, consider showing these engines working in their real life applications. The current boiler could be hooked up to an old timey power station, with a slightly chaotic electrical load downstream that a player can try to sustain a constant voltage for. The grid could even have its own other power supplies that can in turn affect the simulated steam engine, so a player can see a glimpse of the complex dance that those power stations are doing with eachother to keep the lights on. Another route that will likely make a small subset of extreme nerds very happy: Model a steam locomotive. Throw in a 2D representation of some hills, carriages, and stations, and people will sit there for hours.

Would of been cool if you set it up to make a train move as the steam engine works, sort of like a steam train simulator, where you have to regulate your usage of the steam engine in order to get from point A to point B or something. But still, really cool and well developed! I think its pretty cool at how you can see and learn how a steam engine works.

Ooooooh, my inner child is very happy seeing this and is going to download this in the morning. If I had this sort of thing when I was going through my steam train phase of childhood, I would've been immensely happy. Some ideas for you: A measurement of the output and/or efficiency of the steam engine. Multiple expansion steam engines Changing the size, bore and stroke of the cylinder Steam turbines? Different fuels (wood, coal, coal with oil burners and just oil burners) Connecting the wheel output of the steam engine to something. Maybe the wheels on a steam train, or a gearbox, an electric generator, or a ship's propeller? This I imagine would not be easy to implement but I'll say it anyway - simulation of different boiler types and designs. Locomotive boilers tended to be fire tube boilers, whereas a lot of ships used water tube boilers and 3 drum water tube boilers. Some boilers had superheaters to increase efficiency and turn the steam into dry steam. Then there's the draft of the boiler to get air in and exhaust smoke out. So many things to consider.

You should add some little missions for a game loop. Maybe create upgrade paths for the parts. Ideas: -blow up the boiler/gauges -play a song on the steam whistle -make the starter a motor-generator and generate a high output -find settings that work for certain fixed conditions, like high load, leaky valves, constant water flow, etc

I can easily see game ideas for this! Add simulation for the heat source, like coals, change the visuals to look like cross sections of a real engine on a real train, simulate a train that needs to get to somewhere, shown with a separate camera window or on a map or something, and have the player shoveling coal to keep the heat up, but also monitoring the engine so it doesn't overheat. Another idea for a sandbox mode would be to let the player build their own engines. Set pipe diameters and lengths, piston sizes, blah blah blah. Maybe have challenges like "make an engine that can reach X speed" or whatever it would be, and have the player figure out the right combo of pre-made parts to achieve it?

following the water boiling topic: This is the reason your car can be cooled with water. It is a closed pressurised loop, at approximately 1.5 to 2 atmospheres(depending on the car). Your car has either one or multiple pressure release valves that only release pressure over those 1.5 to 2 atmospheres, hence why it needs to be topped up with water or coolant once in a while. If you car overheated at regular atmospheric pressure, it would just blow the gasket with the steam, but since it is under pressure, the water can temporarily reach over 100 degrees. If you do see your can overheating, you probably have enough time to drive to the nearest stop. And if you do stop, DO NOT shut off the engine. Rev it so the water pump can spin faster and circulate the coolant loop faster. Once it goes down to the regular working temperature, then shut off your car
